Abstract

Herbal medicine is widely recognized as a plant-based extract that has been effective for generations in Indonesia to treat various diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of effervescent tablets from a combination of extracts of jati belanda leaves, kumis kucing leaves, sirih leaves, meniran herbs, and turmeric rhizomes, with various sweeteners, namely cane sugar, stevia, and maltodextrin. This study was an descriptive study. The researchers assessed the physical parameters, namely flow rate, angle of repose, and compressibility for granules; while tablet analysis included weight uniformity, size uniformity, friability, hardness, dissolution time, and pH. The results showed that the formulations with stevia and maltodextrin met most of the test criteria effectively. There was a wider variability in the stevia formulation (3%), indicating challenges in achieving consistent tablet weight due to variations in water content. Friability was 0.66% for maltodextrin indicating good structural integrity. It was concluded that the combination tablet of herbal extracts of Guazuma ulmifolia leaves, Orthosiphon aristatus leaves, Piper betle leaves, Phyllanthus niruri herbs, and Curcuma domestica rhizomes showed a successful formulation into effervescent tablets through wet granules, with the use of cane sugar, stevia, and maltodextrin as sweeteners. Keywords: herbal medicine; weight loss; effervescent tablets ABSTRAK Obat herbal diakui secara luas karena ekstrak berbasis tanaman yang telah efektif selama beberapa generasi di Indonesia untuk mengobati berbagai penyakit. Abstract

The anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial qualities of moringa leaf extracts, which are high in saponins, flavonoids, steroids, and phenols, can aid in tissue regeneration and wound healing. The aim of this study was to prepare and formulate a transdermal patch of Moringa oleifera Lam. leaf extract with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as the polymers. The study was aimed at investigating the effect of various concentrations of the extract (20%, 40%, and 80%) on the physical properties of the patch, including organoleptic properties, weight uniformity, thickness, folding endurance, pH, and water absorption. Extract was made by maceration with 96% ethanol, and patches were cast by the solvent casting method. Results showed that all formulations met the required pH range (6.62–6.68), folding endurance (>300 folds), and thickness (<1 mm). However, weight uniformity and moisture absorption exceeded desired optimum values and ranged between 17% to 23%. The 20% concentration of extract exhibited the maximum physical stability. This study highlights the potential of Moringa oleifera leaf extract in transdermal patch preparations, although it needs to be optimized to improve weight consistency and water absorption.

Abstract

The study develops an effervescent tablet formulation with a combination of extracts from temulawak, pegagan, lempuyang wangi, and sweet fennel to increase appetite. Such underweight conditions always lead to a lot of health burdens, like a poor immune system and stunted growth, which makes it highly relevant to have an effective appetite stimulant. The aim of this study is to test the acceptability and effectiveness of the sweeteners (i.e., cane sugar, stevia, and maltodextrin) used in the tablets. The results indicate that all tablet formulations (F1, F2, and F3) passed the granule and physical tablet tests, demonstrating that all variants are of good quality. Moreover, the well-structured formulation process and selection of ingredients in their natural form make the product safe for consumption and effective, hence a really good alternative for improving one's appetite naturally. The present study provides evidence for the role that potentially existing herbal remedies from traditional knowledge may play in their modern applications, nutraceuticals, and improved public health via a simple and effortless means of stimulating appetite.

Abstract

Health problems that occur today are diverse and varied, one of which is being overweight. This study focuses on the formulation of herbal extracts in conventional tablet preparations using Jati Belanda, Kumis Kucing, Meniran, Sirih, and Kunyit which have the potential as weight loss agents. Extraction is carried out using the maceration method, then the extract is made into conventional tablets with additional ingredients: magnesium stearate, talc, PVP, Avicel pH 102, and aerosil. Evaluation of physical properties such as uniformity of size, uniformity of weight, hardness, and disintegration time has been carried out. The results of the study showed that conventional tablet preparations from various spices with 3 different formulations were successful. However, the results of the tablet hardness test have not met existing standards. The danger is the lack of PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone) excipients in the granules which cause the tablets to become brittle. To improve the formulation, the addition of the moisturizing agent can be done.

Abstract

There are many medicinal plants in Indonesia and people have used these medicinal plants to overcome health problems. Tablets are usually made by mixing these ingredients, then pressing the mixture into a solid and easy-to-take form. This study aims to develop a conventional tablet formulation from herbal extracts of Lempuyang Wangi, Pegagan Leaves, Sweet Fennel and Temulawak to increase weight gain. Data were analyzed by conducting granule testing. The results showed that the developed tablet formulation met the requirements for weight uniformity and disintegration time. However, the hardness of the tablet was still below standard. This study shows the potential for further development of this herbal tablet formulation by optimizing the amount and type of binder. The conclusion is that herbal tablets can increase body weight, but optimization of the formulation is still needed.

Abstract

Open wounds are tissue damage that increases the risk of infection and requires proper treatment. Castor leaves (Jatropha curcas L.) contain flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, aiding in tissue regeneration and infection prevention. To enhance its effectiveness, the extract is formulated into a transdermal patch, allowing direct drug absorption through the skin with stable release and convenient application. This study aims to determine the best formulation and optimal concentration of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in transdermal patches to improve stability and release effectiveness of the active compounds from castor leaf extract while evaluating their potential in accelerating wound healing. The transdermal patches were prepared using three variations of HPMC and PVP concentrations: F1 (HPMC 1 g : PVP 0.5 g), F2 (HPMC 0.75 g : PVP 0.75 g), and F3 (HPMC 0.5 g : PVP 1 g). Evaluations included organoleptic tests, pH, thickness, folding endurance, and moisture absorption. The results showed that F1 was the optimal formulation, exhibiting favorable physical characteristics and meeting the required standards, as it had the best mechanical properties with higher folding endurance, optimal thickness, and uniform weight distribution, ensuring better flexibility, durability, and stability. These findings indicate that variations in HPMC and PVP concentrations significantly affect the formulation and stability of transdermal patches, with F1 being the most effective formulation for potential wound healing applications.
