Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that affects children’s growth and development. Indonesia still has a high prevalence of stunting, including in urban areas such as Bogor. Maternal characteristics and nutrition-related behaviors are important factors to consider when designing effective interventions. This study aims to describe maternal demographics, nutrition-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices, as well as the incidence of stunting among toddlers in Gunung Batu Village, Bogor City. A quantitative descriptive observational design was applied, involving all mothers of stunted toddlers aged 6-59 months registered at the Gunung Batu Community Health Center in February 2025. A total of 54 respondents were selected using total sampling. Data on maternal knowledge, attitudes, and practices were collected through questionnaires, while stunting data were obtained from health center records. Descriptive analysis was conducted using frequencies and percentages. The average maternal age was 30.7 years. Most mothers had completed senior high school or vocational education (42.59%) and were housewives (72.22%). All toddlers in the study (N = 54) were classified as stunted. Most mothers demonstrated good levels of knowledge and practices related to toddler nutrition (96.3%), and all reported positive attitudes. Despite these favorable maternal characteristics, stunting persisted among all toddlers in this study. These findings suggest that factors beyond maternal nutrition-related behaviors may contribute to stunting and highlight the need for further studies to identify additional determinants and strengthen prevention strategies.  Keywords: Stunting, Knowledge, Attitude, Practice, Mother, Toddler, Demography.

Abstract

Addressing stunting in Indonesia has of course become a government priority, but if it's just the government itself, it's certainly not enough. An active and participatory role from all stakeholders is a necessity in overcoming stunting, because it is not enough just to involve policies, direct intervention actions in the community to raise awareness and increase awareness must also be carried out. Preventive measures to prevent additional stunting from occurring both quantitatively and qualitatively, and curative measures to assist communities who are suspected of having the potential or even indications of stunting to minimize the resulting risks. For this reason, UKI is present through community service activities at the UKI Faculty of Medicine in the Active Participation movement to Eliminate Stunting Towards a Healthy Indonesia called PkM PARIPURNA. The focus locations (loci) for the activity targets are seven villages in Rancakalong District, Sumedang Regency, West Java with core activities centered at the Rancakalong District Health Center including General Post, IGD Post, KIA Post, and Farmas Post with types of activities in the form of examination services, treatment, education and training. Activities will be carried out from May to August 2023 with a team consisting of lecturers and young doctors from the UKI Faculty of Medicine. The PkM activities were carried out well and received an extraordinary response from the community in seven villages in Rancakalong District, Sumedang Regency. From the results of examination service activities, data was obtained that the majority of people suffer from non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, gout, and others, while for children it is dominated by fever, cough, and diarrhea. Educational activities regarding balanced nutrition for pregnant women and toddlers were also carried out well, there was an increase in participants' knowledge about various information regarding the prevention and management of stunting. It was concluded that the active participation movement to eliminate stunting towards a healthy Indonesia could be a priority choice because it is very effective and has great benefits for society.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem caused by prolonged malnutrition and impaired linear growth. This study analyzed the relationship between maternal age and stunting among toddlers at Noebeba Community Health Center, South Central Timor, during 2022–2024. An analytical cross-sectional design was applied using secondary medical record data from 200 respondents selected through total sampling. Among 81 stunting cases, 61 occurred among mothers aged <20 or >35 years, while 20 occurred among mothers aged 20–35 years. The chi-square test showed a significant association between maternal age and stunting (p=0.001). Mothers in high-risk age groups had 6.256 times greater odds of having stunted children (95% CI: 3.320-11.791). Optimal pregnancy planning and maternal nutrition education should therefore be strengthened.

Abstract

Stunting remains a critical public health issue in Indonesia, reflecting chronic nutritional deficiencies during the crucial first 1,000 days of life. This study focuses on the UPTD Puskesmas Warung Jambu in Bogor, where 123 children were recorded as stunted in 2024. The research addresses the problem of whether maternal compliance and attitudes toward Iron-Folic Acid (IFA) or Tablet Tambah Darah (TTD) consumption during pregnancy are linked to stunting outcomes in toddlers. The primary objective is to analyze the relationship between these maternal factors and the incidence of stunting in this specific population. Using a cross-sectional analytical survey method, data were collected from 69 mothers between November 17 and November 20, 2025, using questionnaires and anthropometric measurements processed via WHO Anthro software. Univariate analysis revealed a high stunting prevalence of 56.5%, while 68.1% of mothers were compliant with IFA consumption and held positive attitudes. Bivariate Chi-square analysis demonstrated a significant relationship (p=0.000) between maternal compliance and stunting, as well as between maternal attitudes and stunting (p=0.000). These findings synthesize the idea that consistent IFA intake (at least 90 tablets) and a proactive maternal mindset are vital for preventing growth failure. In conclusion, poor compliance and negative attitudes significantly increase the risk of stunting, highlighting the need for collaborative educational interventions by health workers and the government to ensure optimal nutrition during pregnancy.

Abstract

Emotional and behavioral problems among adolescents represent a critical issue influencing psychological and social development during a transitional phase of life. The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence and patterns of emotional and behavioral difficulties among adolescents at SMA Kristen Citra Bangsa Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara in 2024. This cross sectional study was conducted from July to August 2024 with a sample of 391 students from grades X to XII. Data collection was performed using the standardized Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to measure dimensions including emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer relationship issues, and prosocial behavior. The findings indicate that abnormal emotional symptoms were significantly more prevalent in female students (22.5%) than in males (4.9%), while abnormal prosocial behavior was more frequently observed in males (2.3%). Age-based analysis revealed that abnormal emotional problems peaked at age 15 (19.6%), whereas hyperactivity reached its highest abnormal levels at age 16 (4.8%). The study concludes that adolescent emotional and behavioral issues manifest in distinct patterns influenced by age and gender. These results synthesize the need for systematic mental health screening within schools to facilitate early intervention. Implementing gender-specific support and age-appropriate psychological services is essential to mitigate long-term negative consequences, such as academic decline and social withdrawal, thereby ensuring optimal adolescent development in the region.

Abstract

Pneumonia is an acute infection of the lung parenchyma that commonly affects children under five years of age and remains a leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide. The inflammatory response to pneumonia is accompanied by alterations in hematological parameters, including leukocytosis and lymphopenia, which may reflect disease severity. This study aimed to evaluate the association between leukocyte and lymphocyte counts and clinical outcomes in toddlers hospitalized with pneumonia at Budhi Asih Regional Hospital. This observational analytical study employed a cross-sectional design using medical records of 117 toddlers diagnosed with pneumonia. Leukocytosis was defined as a leukocyte count of >15,500 cells/µL, while lymphopenia was defined as a lymphocyte count of <2,000 cells/µL. Clinical outcomes were categorized as improvement or deterioration. Associations between hematological parameters and clinical outcomes were analyzed using the Chi-square test, and effect sizes were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Leukocytosis was significantly associated with clinical deterioration (OR = 24.27, 95% CI: 6.97–84.52; p < 0.001). Likewise, lymphopenia was significantly associated with unfavorable clinical outcomes (OR = 3.05, 95% CI: 1.13–8.26; p = 0.024). A significant association was also observed between leukocyte and lymphocyte abnormalities (p = 0.004). Children with leukocytosis and lymphopenia were more likely to experience clinical deterioration than those without these hematological abnormalities. These findings suggest that leukocytosis and lymphopenia are significantly associated with clinical outcomes in toddlers with pneumonia and may serve as useful adjunctive laboratory markers in clinical assessment. However, because of the cross-sectional design, causal or prognostic inferences cannot be established. Prospective longitudinal studies are warranted to validate their predictive value for disease progression and clinical outcomes. Keywords: Clinical outcomes, leukocytes, lymphocytes, toddler pneumonia
