Abstract

Stomatocytes are erythrocytes characterized by a slit-like central pallor. Although they may appear in small numbers under physiological conditions, increased proportions are often associated with pathological states. Establishing population-specific reference intervals is therefore essential to avoid misinterpretation of erythrocyte morphology. This study aims to determine the reference interval for Stomatocyte counts in a healthy population from Jakarta and its surrounding areas, and to assess their relationship with routine hematological and biochemical parameters. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among healthy individuals undergoing health check-ups at UKI General Hospital and East Bekasi Hospital from August 2022 to October 2024. Of 65 samples collected, 54 met the inclusion criteria. Stomatocyte counts were evaluated from peripheral blood smears by counting per 1,000 erythrocytes. Reference intervals were established using the 2.5th to 97.5th percentile method. The overall reference interval for Stomatocytes was 0 - 1.85%. Gender-specific intervals were 0 - 2.0% in men and 0 - 1.7% in women. No significant associations were observed between Stomatocyte counts and complete blood count parameters, liver function tests, or kidney function tests. In conclusion, Stomatocytes may be present at low levels in healthy individuals, with a locally derived reference interval of 0 - 1.85%. These findings highlight the importance of applying clearly defined reference intervals and considering clinical context when interpreting erythrocyte morphology to prevent overdiagnosis. Keywords: Stomatocytes, Reference Values, Erythrocyte Morphology,  Peripheral Blood Smear.

Abstract

Stunting merupakan kondisi defisiensi nutrisi kronis yang memengaruhi pertumbuhan dan perkembangan. Kondisi stunting juga dipengaruhi oleh kesehatan lingkungan, kondisi keluarga, pola asuh anak, riwayat infeksi, sanitasi (sarana pembuangan limbah, perilaku hidup sehat), kondisi air minum, perilaku hidup sehat (pembuangan limbah, perilaku kebersihan tubuh dan lingkungan).  Oleh karenanya gambaran pengetahuan, sikap dan perilaku dalam masyarakat khususnya ibu dan subyek dianalisis dengan menggunakan kuesioner WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene). Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan utama untuk menganalisa perbedaan WASH pada anak stunting dan non-stunting di Posyandu Bidan Mega, Babakan Mandang, Sentul Jawa Barat pada Tahun 2022-2023. Metode penelitian Studi Kasus desain potong lintang, dengan 23 balita stunting dan 21 balita sehat usia 0-¬59 bulan. Wawancara orangtua/wali subyek dilakukan setelah penetapan status nutrisi (stunting) subyek berdasarkan ketentuan WHO dan Kemenkes. Hasil wawancara WASH menunjukkan adanya kecenderungan anak stunting tidak memiliki riwayat imunisasi yang lengkap dan lebih sering terkena penyakit infeksi khususnya Diare dan rawat inap. Terkait aspek WASH, aspek Sanitasi pola pembuangan sampah dan pengelolaan limbah lebih buruk pada anak stunting dibandingkan non-stunting, sedangkan pola praktek perilaku (hygiene practice) menjaga kebersihan sudah baik pada semua subyek. Pada aspek pengelolaan air tidak ada perbedaan yang mencolok antara anak stunting dan non-stunting. Dengademikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah Hygiene Practice Sanitasi lingkungan diasumsikan memengaruhi kejadian anak stunting di Babakan Mandang Sentul terutama pada aspek pengelolaan limbah atau sampah, sedangkan aspek hygiene practice dan pengelolaan air sudah baik.

Abstract

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carry a virus that causes Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), a disease that continues to be a major health concern in Indonesia, particularly for children. Because variations in hematocrit and platelet counts might reveal the severity of the illness, these tests are crucial for both diagnosing and tracking the progression of DHF. The purpose of this study is to create a picture of the patient demographics and to comprehend the association between hematocrit and platelet parameters and the clinical outcomes of juvenile DHF patients. Objective to determine whether there is a relationship between increased hematocrit levels and the lowest platelet count with the outcome of dengue fever patients in children at Ciracas Regional Hospital. This research was conducted through a quantitative descriptive model with a retrospective approach. Data collection was carried out through medical records of pediatric patients with DHF at Ciracas Regional Hospital in 2022-2024, including demographic data, hematocrit, platelet examination results, and patient outcomes. Data analysis through Univariate and Bivariate analysis with the C-Square test. From this research, it can be seen that the majority of patients experienced a decrease in platelets <50,000 and an increase in hematocrit values ≤20%. A significant correlation was found between low platelet levels and an increase of ≤20% in hematocrit levels with patient clinical outcomes with a p value = 0.000. An decreased in plateleft levels and an increased in hematocrited ≤20% are important indicators in determining the clinical outcomes of DHF in children. Patients can recover even with a decrease in platelet levels <50,000, allegedly due to good and appropriate medical intervention, and the low level of increase in hematocrit levels contributes to the patient's clinical outcomes.

Abstract

Burr cells or also known as echinocytes are erythrocytes with short spicules evenly spaced and appear pale in the middle. Burr cells are found in patients with chronic kidney disease, burns, liver disease, uremia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, pyruvate kinase deficiency, post-transfusion, or can be found in the form of artifacts. This study aims to find the range of normal burr cell values in healthy adults and to find the correlation between burr cells with urea, creatinine, cholesterol, SGPT, and gender. The method used is a quantitative descriptive research design with a cross-sectional approach. Samples were taken using a purposive sampling technique, and 54 subjects who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed for patient characteristics and laboratory results. The results showed a very weak relationship between burr cells with gender, creatinine, and SGPT with a correlation value of <0.1 and a weak relationship between burr cells with urea and cholesterol with a correlation value of >0.1 - <0.3. The normal burr cell value range was obtained with a lower limit value of 0 and an upper limit value of 30.88 burr cells per 1000 erythrocytes.
