Abstract

Gender socialization within the family is a crucial process that determines a woman’s future quality of life. The family serves as the primary agent for the structural transmission of gender norms to women. Studies on gender socialization in modern families generally highlight the dynamics of domestic role division and the negotiation of relationships. Nevertheless, women are still often positioned as passive recipients of the effects of social structures. This study aims to reconstruct this understanding by positioning women as active, reflective agents capable of interpreting, modifying, and negotiating gender norms based on religious values. This study employs a literature review approach through thematic synthesis of accredited national journal articles (minimum SINTA 4) and international theoretical literature. This study identified six strategies women employ in negotiating gender socialization: selective acceptance, reinterpretation of religious values, symbolic compromise and covert resistance, relational negotiation, management of dual roles, and cross-domain identity differentiation within the family and digital spaces. The analysis results indicate that gender socialization in modern families is a dialogical process between structure and agency. Research Implications – This study is limited to the specific literature cited for analysis, focusing on women’s strategies for negotiating gender socialization while considering religious values. Therefore, generalizations cannot be made to all modern families, which have distinct specific conditions. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the development of gender studies in Indonesia at the micro level. This study not only examines women’s strategies for addressing gender value contradictions but also views women as active individuals living within both modern families and digital spaces, who reinterpret religious teachings to apply them in the process of gender socialization at the family level.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Tamangapa Final Disposal Site (TPA Tamangapa) as a source of livelihood and to examine the economic adaptation strategies of the community in Tamangapa Subdistrict, Makassar City. The main issue addressed is the community’s dependence on the informal waste sector, which on one hand sustains household needs, but on the other hand poses health risks, income instability, and limited social protection. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, while data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that TPA Tamangapa has formed a local waste-based economic system supported by social capital and community survival strategies. These activities also contribute to waste reduction through the implementation of reduce, reuse, recycle (3R) practices. The proposed solutions emphasize the importance of community-based empowerment, strengthening business capacities, improving access to microfinance, and developing inclusive policies to create a sustainable livelihood for communities surrounding the landfill. Abstract

Basic education plays a crucial role in shaping students’ character and cultural identity, including through learning based on local wisdom. In this context, teachers occupy a central position as agents who bridge the curriculum with the cultural values that thrive in students’ communities. This study aims to examine the role of teachers in implementing local wisdom-based learning in elementary schools in Makassar City, covering teachers’ understanding of local wisdom, the forms of integration in learning, the challenges they face, and the impact on students. The study employs a qualitative case study design at SD Muhammadiyah Perumnas and UPT SPF SD Inpres Cilallang. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers and school principals, classroom observations, and analysis of learning documents, and were analyzed using thematic analysis with triangulation of sources and techniques to ensure data validity. The research findings indicate that teachers at both schools possess a fairly good understanding of Bugis–Makassar cultural values such as tabe', Siri' na Pacce, and gotong royong, and actively integrate them into various subjects such as Pancasila Education, Civic Education, and Cultural Arts, through an integrative thematic and values-based approach. The forms of integration implemented by teachers include teaching the traditional Mappadendang dance, folk tales, the use of the local language, and instilling the value of tabe' in daily interactions. In carrying out their roles, teachers face three main challenges: limited resources and facilities, low parental support, and the absence of clear policy guidelines. Nevertheless, teachers' role in local wisdom-based learning has a positive impact, evidenced by increased student politeness and a growing sense of pride in local culture. This study concludes that optimizing teachers' roles requires a harmonious educational ecosystem encompassing schools, families, and policy.
