Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder whose prevalence continues to increase globally. One of its most detrimental microvascular complications is diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), which is strongly influenced by the patient’s lifestyle. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between lifestyle and the severity of DPN in patients with DM at Sapta Medika Indrapura Hospital. This was a quantitative, descriptive-analytical study with a cross-sectional design. A total of 51 patients with DM were selected through purposive sampling. Lifestyle was measured using the FANTASTIC Lifestyle Checklist (covering family/friends, physical activity, nutrition, smoking, alcohol, sleep/stress, and behavioral patterns), and the severity of DPN was assessed using the Diabetic Neuropathy Score (DNS). Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation test. Most respondents had an unhealthy lifestyle (68.6%) and experienced severe DPN (64.7%). The Spearman’s rho test showed a significant but weak positive correlation between lifestyle and DPN severity (r = 0.116; p = 0.042; p < 0.05). Lifestyle is significantly associated with the severity of DPN in patients with diabetes, although the association is weak. Healthy behavioral change remains an important strategy to reduce the risk of further complications such as ulceration and amputation. The small, single-center sample limits generalizability, and the cross-sectional design precludes causal inference. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Lifestyle, Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, Disease Severity, Indonesia.

Abstract

Nurses are healthcare professionals who are at risk of experiencing Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) and work-related fatigue due to high physical demands, heavy workloads, and non-ergonomic working postures. This Community Service Program aimed to improve nurses' knowledge and skills regarding the prevention of MSDs and fatigue management at Sundari General Hospital. The program was conducted through health education sessions, discussions, and stretching exercise practices involving 15 nurses. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test assessments. The results showed an improvement in participants' knowledge, with the average pre-test score increasing from 65.3 to 88.7 in the post-test. In addition, participants were able to practice stretching techniques, ergonomic principles, and proper body mechanics correctly. This program was effective in enhancing nurses' understanding of MSD prevention and fatigue management and is expected to support occupational health, work productivity, and the quality of nursing care services.

Abstract

Abstract

Optimal nurse performance can be achieved through high work motivation and a supportive work environment, both of which play essential roles in facilitating the implementation of nursing duties and contribute significantly to the successful delivery of nursing care by staff nurses. This study aimed to determine the relationship between work motivation, work environment, and the performance of staff nurses in the inpatient wards of Sundari General Hospital, Medan. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was non-probability sampling through total sampling, involving 30 respondents. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The results showed that 22 respondents (73.3%) had high work motivation and good performance, while 16 respondents (53.3%) reported a good work environment and demonstrated good performance. The results of the Chi-square test indicated a significant relationship between work motivation and work environment with the performance of staff nurses in the inpatient wards of Sundari General Hospital, Medan. Therefore, improving nurses' performance requires both strong work motivation and a supportive work environment.
