Abstract

This research focuses on the Javanese locality in interpreting Surah Luqman: 21 in the book of tafsir al-Ibriz.. The objective is to determine the locality of Javanese culture that K.H. Bisri Musthofa incorporated into his interpretation. K.H Bisri Musthofa's reality in society is rich in cultural practices. The researchers then employed a qualitative method to collect data via library research, followed by content analysis to conclude that K.H. Bisri Mushtofa asserts that he dialogues the Qur'an with local culture to ensure the validity of his interpretation. He utilized Javanese pegon (modified Javanese script) for interpretation and incorporated instances of Javanese traditional practices, including sajen (offering), sowing porridge, and mitoni (the traditional ceremony to celebrate the seventh month of pregnancy). Then, he divided the culture that existed in Javanese society into two types.  First, some cultures should not be preserved, such as offering offerings and sprinkling porridge. This is because it is contrary to Islamic teachings.  Second, culture can be preserved because it is in accordance with Islamic teachings, the basic principle of which is almsgiving, for example mitoni.

Abstract

Qawm is one of the terms used in the Qur’an to refer to a group of people. Using a qualitative study with an analytical descriptive approach based on library research, this study explored the meaning of the word qawm in the Qur’an through the semantic approach of Toshihiko Izutsu. The aimed of this study was to uncover the true meaning of qawm and formulate a final conclusion regarding the weltanschauung or worldview associated with the term. The semantic analysis based on Izutsu’s method involves several steps: identifying the key term, determining its basic and relational meanings, revealing its historical development, and finally describing the weltanschauung of qawm in the Qur’anic context. The findings showed that in the Qur’an, qawm does not merely signify a group based on ethnicity or culture, but rather a community evaluated through their attitude toward divine teachings. The term encompasses both men and women who live together as a group. The Qur’an classifies qawm into two categories: positive characters—those who believe in and obey Allah; and negative characters —those who reject His teachings and ultimately face destruction. This view indicated that the Qur’an does not judge people based on their origins, but on their faith and moral character. Thus, the concept of qawm reflects the Qur’anic worldview that highlights the importance of spiritual and ethical values in shaping both individual and collective identity.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to analyze the meaning of the story thematically and to identify its relevance for contemporary society. This study employed the thematic interpretation method ( tafsir maudhu'i ) with a library research approach, focusing on three main chapters: QS. Al- A'raf : 73–79, QS. An-Naml: 45–53, and QS. Al-Qamar: 23–32. The findings revealed that from a socio-historical perspective, the material advancement of the Thamud civilization was not accompanied by moral maturity, leading to greed, social injustice, and environmental exploitation. From a phenomenological perspective, their rejection was understood as a form of closed consciousness, arrogance, and spiritual alienation from monotheism. Ibn Kathir's commentary strengthens this analysis by providing detailed reports and chronology that confirms the pattern of destruction among nations that rejects the truth. The novelty of this study lay in synthesizing classical exegesis with thematic and multidisciplinary approaches to provide a more comprehensive understanding. Its implications are relevant to contemporary issues such as environmental degradation, social inequality, and the reinforcement of transcendental values as the foundation of moral and social policies.

Abstract

Rebo Wekasan tradition in Indonesia remains a persistent socio-religious practice. This tradition is practiced by the general public and Pondok Pesantren across rural and urban areas, including Pondok Pesantren Al-Hikmah in Bandar Lampung, located in a diverse urban community. Despite the continued practice, the Rebo Wekasan tradition has received different responses from society. The concept is an act of bid’ah, inconsistent with Islamic teachings, and should be preserved as part of local wisdom. Therefore, this study aims to examine how local religious authorities negotiate the interpretation of Hadīth ahkam related to the Rebo Wekasan tradition. Interviews are conducted with religious leaders, observation, and documentation, supported by the analyses of Hadīth ahkam using the approaches of takhrij, sharh Hadīth, fiqhul Hadīth, and socio-cultural analysis. The results show that the Rebo Wekasan tradition at Pondok Pesantren Al-Hikmah Bandar Lampung consists of voluntary prayers, the recitation of Sūrah Yasin, dhikr, prayers for protection from misfortune, and charitable communal meals. This practice represents the negotiation of the understanding and interpretation of general Hadīth ahkam through the authority of local religious leaders. Kiai at Pondok Pesantren continue to observe Rebo Wekasan tradition despite the absence of any specific textual evidence prescribing the practice. Local religious authorities play an important role in sustaining socio-religious practices as a method of da‘wah and in strengthening silaturrahim in the community and among Pondok Pesantren. This study contributes to academic discussions on the interpretation of Hadīth ahkam by negotiating between textual meaning and religious authority through a socio-cultural approach.
