Abstract

Identity is seen as something important to humans in society, as it shows the origin of the self. Sometimes, someone cannot accept the identity that is attached to them, which will lead to the process of forming a new identity. This case also happens to the main character of The Scent of Sake, a novel by Joyce Lebra published in 2009. Rie Omura is not allowed to interfere in the sake making business, so that she tries to change that identity. Thus, this study aims to examine the process of identity formation that occurs in the character of a Japanese woman, represented by Rie. To answer the research problem, this study uses a textual analysis as the research methods. The theory used to assist the analysis is a perspective proposed by Žižek regarding the formation of subject’s identity to achieve the stage of authentic subject. The results show that in her efforts to unbind herself from the symbolic order, she makes attempts to rule the brewer house. However, her action cannot be categorized as a radical action since it cannot bring her out of the Symbolic. It confirms that Rie is failed to be an authentic subject. Keywords: Japanese Woman, Authentic Subject, Žižek, The Scent of Sake Identitas dipandang sebagai sesuatu yang penting bagi manusia yang hidup bermasyarakat karena menunjukkan asal-usul. Kata Kunci: Perempuan Jepang, Subjek Autentik, Žižek, The Scent of Sake

Abstract

Jacques Derrida coined two Deconstruction concepts: Binary Opposition and Logocentrism used to analyze the protagonist characters: Esa Khattak and his junior, Rachel Getty, in Ausma Zehanat Khan’s The Unquiet Dead (2013). The binary opposition analysis is used to reveal the binary of the character and its opposition. The results of the analysis show that Khattak as the main protagonist has Good Superior and Resolute traits as his dominant binaries; while Rachel Getty’s central binaries are Forthright and Independent. The concept of logocentrism is decentralizing the dominant binary to create a new center by putting it under erasure. Khattak is symbolized as Justice because his main binary represents the characteristics of justice which is associated with real-world, such as courts. Rachel Getty is symbolized as Feminism because the leading binary represents the characteristics of Feminism which is associated with examples of feminist such as Kartini as the independent women. Thus, Kahn’s novel reconstructs the protagonist characters to question our binary perspectives, such as good/bad, justice/injustice, and feminist/masculine.

Abstract

History says that design is actually rooted in artistic activities that have grown towards one sphere of culture in its essence to another: the means of everyday human life. When historical descriptions state that the primitive people make cangulals as a tool that is a transformation of the extension of the hand: often questions about design, art or technology. Design is challenged to have to engage in a variety of cultural weather.  As with technology, design is required to immediately formulate the situation in line with the development of other cultural sectors. The construction of the Bauhus in Germany, with the prophecy of Walter Gropius, is considered a milestone in the development of modern design history. The basic philosophy of the Bauhaus departs from the idea that the methods of industrial production of the 19th century have led to the disregard of the relationship between the process of design and handicraft or the ability of the hand, the unity between the creator and the product is broken. In fact, the influence, the Bauhaus principles that later evolved into an International style, were not the product of experiments produced by the instructors (Meister) and his students, but the methodology of visual arts education and the design methodology that he taught. The fundamental role of a designer will never change, but what will change is his commercial situation. Technology, research, and manufacturing techniques of different products drive manufacturers to produce similar items. Keywords: History; Product Design; Design Role
