Abstract

In an era characterized by an overwhelming abundance of information and media channels, the concept of truth and reality has become increasingly complex. Media literacy, the ability to critically analyse, evaluate, and understand media messages, plays a crucial role in navigating this complexity. This paper explores the philosophical dimensions of media literacy and its implications for the understanding of truth and reality. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from philosophy, communication studies, and cognitive science, this study investigates the intricate relationship between media literacy and the construction of truth and reality. By delving into various philosophical frameworks, including epistemology, ontology, and phenomenology, the research examined how individuals' media literacy skills shape their perceptions and interpretations of truth and reality. Additionally, the study examines how media literacy influences individuals' ontological understanding of reality. It explores how media messages shape and mediate individuals' perception of the world, examining the interplay between subjective experiences, social constructs, and media representations. Furthermore, the study investigated the potential for media literacy to foster a more nuanced understanding of reality, encouraging individuals to engage in critical reflexivity and challenge their preconceived notions. The findings of this study showed that media literacy plays a pivotal role in enhancing critical thinking skills and mitigating truth distortion in a post-truth society.

Abstract

This conceptual research explores the transformative potential of digital learning platforms in the realm of behaviour change communication within the context of public health education. With the rapid advancement of digital technology, the traditional methods of health communication are being reimagined, offering new opportunities and challenges for promoting healthier behaviours and lifestyles. The research seeks to understand the evolving landscape of digital learning platforms and their integration into public health education programs. It investigates how these platforms can be leveraged to design and disseminate behaviour change communication interventions effectively. The study examines the theoretical foundations that underpin behaviour change communication and the ways in which digital learning platforms can enhance these foundations. Furthermore, the research addresses the critical issue of accessibility and inclusivity, as digital platforms have the potential to bridge the gap between diverse populations in terms of health literacy, socio-economic status, and geographical location. By employing a conceptual framework that combines elements of health communication theory, pedagogy, and technology adoption models, this study aims to provide insights into the effective utilization of digital learning platforms for behaviour change communication. Findings indicate that the use of digital learning platforms has led to increase engagement in public health education. This exploration is expected to shed light on the potential of these platforms to drive positive health behaviour change among diverse populations and pave the way for more informed strategies in the field of public health education. Ultimately, this research aims to encourage further exploration and development of digital learning tools for behaviour change communication in public health, with the potential to make a significant impact on global health outcomes.

Abstract

This qualitative case study analysed the utilization of symbolic interactionism, pragmatism, and social constructionism in recent development communication campaigns in Nigeria. A dataset of 87 campaigns over the last 5 years across rural, urban, northern, southern, and coastal regions was compiled. Deductive and inductive thematic analysis examined shared meanings, communicative actions towards desired ends, socially constructed representations, and additional context-specific patterns. These theoretical lenses provide valuable insights into target audiences, messaging techniques, and facilitating behavioural and social change. Symbolic interactionism focuses on shared meanings arising through social interactions and informs the cultural framing of campaign messages. Pragmatism suggests appealing to the practical impacts on people’s lives rather than abstract principles to motivate change. Finally, social constructionism sees societal issues as constructed through discourse, which campaigns can influence through strategic communication. Together, these three perspectives offer a conceptual toolkit for designing resonant campaigns, grounded in the local context, that raise awareness on issues like poverty, health, and gender equality while also shaping public discourse and norms in the longer term. Further scholarship on practical applications of these theories can improve developmental outcomes in Nigeria. This desk analysis provides a foundation for future empirical studies on campaign design and reception, and sets an agenda for theory-driven communication strategies that create meaningful social change.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception (KAP) of farmers in Uyo regarding broadcast media reports on soil contamination. A survey sample of 384 respondents took part in the study. The research assessed the level of awareness among farmers concerning soil contamination as conveyed through broadcast media, as well as their attitudes towards such information and overall perceptions of the issue. Findings showed that Uyo farmers were familiar with the concept of soil contamination. This suggests that the majority of them have been exposed to information about soil contamination through mass media sources. Broadcast media reports on soil contamination provide accurate and reliable information to farmers. Uyo farmers rated broadcast media source of information about soil contamination and agricultural practices as trustworthy. The study recommended that broadcast media reports should be presented in the local language(s) spoken by Uyo farmers and should be tailored to their cultural context. This approach enhances comprehension and receptiveness, fostering a deeper understanding of soil contamination issues and solutions.

Abstract

As communication technologies and media platforms continue to evolve, there is a growing need to re-examine the theoretical paradigms underpinning our understanding of human interaction and meaning-making. This research elucidates the enduring relevance of three sociological perspectives—Symbolic Interactionism, Pragmatism, and Social Constructionism—for making sense of contemporary communication landscapes. Employing a qualitative meta-synthesis methodology, we analysed 50 academic articles and book chapters discussing applications of these perspectives within communication and media studies. Our analysis reveals how core concepts from each tradition—including symbolic meaning-making, practical consequences of communication, socially constructed representations—contain explanatory power for grasping new communication patterns and challenges brought by digitalization. Researchers apply Symbolic Interactionist notions of symbolic cues and improvised self-presentations to study computer-mediated communication and social media self-constructions. Pragmatist views on communicative actions as tools for desired ends inform critical analyses of fake news propagation and disinformation campaigns. Social Constructionist emphasis on mass media representations shaping shared realities has expanded to deconstructions of algorithmically-curated information environments. By elucidating these and other linkages, our study aims to revitalize engagement with forgotten or overlooked theoretical foundations in order to advance communication scholarship and enhance reflexivity within emergent media ecosystems. We conclude that integrating insights from Symbolic Interactionism, Pragmatism, and Social Constructionism remains vitally important, both for scholarly aims of explaining reality and practical aims of consciously shaping it.

Abstract

This study explores how gender roles are being negotiated through social media cruise culture, using Geh-Geh University—a popular online platform created by Nigerian social media influencer Geh-Geh—as a case study. The core issue examined is the ideological contest between divergent gender role messages promoted by Geh-Geh and his critics, such as Saidaboj and Blessing CEO, whose opposing views reflect broader societal tensions around gender expectations among Nigerian youths. Guided by Social Identity Theory, which explains how individuals align with social groups to affirm their identities and values, the study employed qualitative discourse analysis to examine online narratives and audience interactions across platforms including TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, blogs, and Instagram. Findings show that Geh-Geh uses humor, everyday language, and relatable storytelling to encourage young men to embrace hard work, responsibility, and value women who support them. In contrast, critics like Saidaboj and Blessing CEO promote messages that endorse financial dependence on men and normalize "billing culture." Audience responses revealed a polarized landscape: many young men resonate with Geh-Geh’s calls for independence, while some women express dissatisfaction, citing reduced financial benefits in relationships. The study concludes that gender roles among Nigerian youths are increasingly shaped by online discourse, where traditional expectations are being redefined and contested. Social media cruise has emerged as a powerful arena for gender negotiation. The study recommends that educators, policymakers, and advocacy organizations leverage digital literacy and participatory dialogue platforms to foster healthier, more equitable gender relations among young people in the digital age.
