Abstract

The English writing learning process is crucial in English language education, but it often faces challenges such as limited resources and ineffective teaching methods. To address these issues, this study explores the use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) integrated with Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL) learning, specifically in the writing course. The research aims to investigate how the integration of PBL and TPACK can enhance students' writing learning outcomes (assessing their content and clarity, structure of the writing, and language quality). The research follows a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design with a quantitative approach. The subjects consist of 10th-grade students from a public high school in Pasuruan Regency, with a total of 33 participants. Data collection instruments include pre and post writing tests and observation. Data analysis is conducted using Microsoft Excel, employing percentages. The findings demonstrate that the implementation of PBL integrated with TPACK leads to significant improvements in students' writing learning outcomes. In the pre-cycle, the pass percentage was only 39.39%, while in cycle I, it increased to 75.76%, and in cycle II, it reached 93.94%. This study contributes to the development of curricula and teaching methods for English writing. These findings have important implications for future writing instruction that can help improve students' writing learning outcomes. This study’s limitations are constraining the applicability of its findings to diverse educational environments and a relatively brief timeframe. Future research could explore cross-cultural variations, delve into extended research periods, and compare the effectiveness of PBL and TPACK with alternative teaching models in EFL education.

Abstract

This article examined the fundamental OFC types that students prefer for oral corrective feedback to improve their speaking ability in speaking class. It aims to give a clearer understanding of beliefs alignment between teachers and students, thus enabling them to choose appropriate OCF techniques that will enhance students’ performance. This study also contributes to the comprehension of OCF use in the educational context of Indonesia which is aimed at evidencing data-based learning. This research was carried out at Universitas Negeri Malang specifically in the Department of English and used descriptive quantitative design through surveys where respondents were 116. The instrument of this study was a questionnaire. The result indicates that when providing OCF, student emotions and preferences should be considered since these directly affect both the kind of feedback to be given and its effectiveness. In terms of the “delivery” of the feedback, students prefer metalinguistic and recast feedback types. However, there are some discrepancies in terms of their perceived effectiveness among students. Notably, metalinguistic, repetition, as well as recast OCF types, proved most advantageous concerning proficiency development. Furthermore, indirect OCF is more favored than direct administration timing. This research implies that metalinguistic, repetition, and recast feedback are types of OCF that are suitable for use in speaking classes with the aim of improving speaking performance. Since this research has not provided a data-based explanation of how students' preferred OCF helps improve their performance, future research is expected to conduct an in-depth exploration of its successful use.

Abstract

The disparity between Engineering Education and the imperative for English language proficiency remains significant. Frequently, engineering students exhibit a deficiency in practical English skills, particularly in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), a necessity for their forthcoming careers or advanced pursuits. In response to this challenge, this study seeks to carry out a need analysis of the English language within the domain of Automotive Engineering Education. Executed as a literature review, the study meticulously examines pertinent journals and scholarly texts on ESP. Additionally, it incorporates interviews with English language professors at the tertiary level to ascertain appropriate English language content suitable for inclusion in Automotive Engineering Education curricula. By drawing upon the analytical framework of Basturkmen and Dudley-Evans' Need Analysis, in conjunction with the methodology of St John & Saint John, the research delineates and assesses these identified needs within the context of Automotive Engineering Education programs. The investigation discerns the specific language components pivotal for facilitating effective communication within the sphere of Automotive Engineering Education

Abstract

Abstract

This research paper investigates the significant differences and similarities in cohesion devices between personal statements created by AI and those written by humans for Masters of TESOL applications. Using qualitative methods, this study applies Halliday and Hasan's Cohesion Model to analyse six personal statements: three created by AI and three created by humans. The focus is on reference, substitution, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. The findings revealed that the human-generated texts used richer and more varied cohesion devices, including personal and demonstrative references, substitutions, and diverse conjunctions, which enhanced readability and engagement. In contrast, while efficient and coherent, AI-generated texts often lack personal touch and variety, resulting in a more segmented narrative. In addition, AI-generated texts exhibited a higher level of text difficulty and could be detected by AI tools at a rate of 8.05%, compared to 0% for texts written by humans. This study highlights the need for balanced, cohesive elements in AI-generated texts to ensure authenticity and readability, emphasizing the importance of sophisticated detection tools to distinguish between human writing and AI writing. These insights contribute to the EAP understanding of human–AI collaboration in academic writing and inform writing pedagogy and curriculum design by highlighting ways to incorporate AI awareness and critical engagement into instructional practices.
