Abstract

This research aims to analyze the errors made by students in writing descriptive texts. The study employed a descriptive qualitative research method and involved 12 students from the Department of English Education at UINSU as research participants. Data was collected through documentation, specifically gathering 12 descriptive texts written by the students. The results of the analysis indicate common errors in descriptive writing, with punctuation errors comprising the largest percentage at 33%. Students often struggle with proper punctuation usage, leading to unclear sentence structures. Word choice errors were the second most prevalent at 13%, reflecting challenges in selecting appropriate and accurate words for descriptions. Additional significant errors included word order (12%), tense agreement (12%), capitalization (6%), verb form (6%), verb tense (6%), and pronoun agreement (6%). Less common errors were observed in article usage (3%) and spelling mistakes (3%). These findings emphasize the areas that require attention and improvement for students to enhance their descriptive writing skills.

Abstract

Abstract: This step-by-step guide provides an overview of English phonology, exploring its definition, scope, and the relationship between phonetics and phonology. It delves into the classification and articulation of English sounds, covering aspects such as place and manner of articulation. The guide emphasizes the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as a standardized system for representing sounds, and provides examples of English vowels and consonants represented by IPA symbols. Understanding English phonology enables learners to improve their pronunciation accuracy, comprehend spoken English more effectively, and enhance their overall communication skills.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Hello English app in improving the English listening skills of ninth-grade students at Subulussalam Junior High School. Using Coats' (2005) model in two research cycles, this classroom action research involved 23 students. The impetus for this research arose from the challenges students continuously faced when trying to understand spoken English. These challenges include fast audio speed, unfamiliar vocabulary, and difficulty concentrating during listening activities. Quantitative data collected during the study showed a significant improvement in students' listening scores, with the average score increasing significantly from 45.1 before the intervention to 83.4 afterward. This improvement can be attributed to students' increased familiarity with the interactive features of the Hello English app. These features include repetition options, feedback, audio level adjustment, and engaging gamified learning elements. Qualitative data from interviews with students and teachers highlight a significant increase in students' engagement levels, motivation, and self-confidence from using the app. The findings of this study indicate that the Hello English app effectively improves listening skills. This is achieved by promoting active and independent learning, which aligns with metacognitive strategies and gamification principles. By fostering a sense of independence and creating a student-centered learning environment, this study concludes that integrating digital applications in language teaching not only addresses common listening challenges but also supports the objectives of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum.
