Abstract

The aim of this research is to study two things: how gay people use the Hornet application in Tegal City and how this application impacts gay people. This research is a phenomenological study. Apart from that, the data collection method uses first observation, in-depth interviews with five main informants—gays—using the Hornet application, and collecting documents relevant to the research objectives. The research results show that several communication patterns are used in interacting with the hornet application: 1) communication patterns to seek friendship; 2) communication patterns to seek relationships; 3) communication patterns for seeking meetings; 4) communication patterns using special language or nonverbal language; 5) communication patterns that use stimuli; and 6) communication patterns that determine behavior when given stimuli. According to the five informants, the Hornet application is relevant for gay groups in terms of openness about their sexual orientation.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the extent to which Instagram and TikTok affect the level of self-disclosure among Communication Science students at UPS Tegal. In this manner, the objective is to determine whether Instagram and TikTok are related. Following this, quantitative research was conducted utilizing techniques of purposive sampling. The Slovin formula is applied to 61 UPS Tegal Communication Science students using this method. As a data collection instrument, Google Forms is utilized to administer the survey. Validity and reliability assessments are conducted in order to evaluate the instrument. In order to analyze the data, descriptive statistics, pre-requisite tests, and hypothesis testing were implemented. Self-disclosure is positively correlated with Instagram and TikTok, as indicated by the findings of the research data analysis (r = -0.451, greater than 0.176). In conclusion, as the functionality of Instagram and TikTok improves, so does the degree of candor among students.

Abstract

Among contemporary youth, particularly Generation Z, which currently constitutes a significant proportion of Indonesia’s population, everyday communication patterns have become increasingly relaxed, expressive, and adaptive to linguistic change. One prominent phenomenon within this group is the use of animal-related swear words, which are no longer perceived solely as negative expressions but have become integrated into everyday communicative practices. This study adopts a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to examine how such expressions are interpreted within interpersonal relationships. Drawing upon Social Penetration Theory, the study explores the function of animal-based swear words in informal communication as indicators of familiarity, comfort, and relational closeness. However, when the use of such expressions is not aligned with the depth of interpersonal relationships, it may result in violations of social norms or ethical standards and potentially lead to social or legal consequences. The findings reveal a semantic shift, commonly associated with pejoration, in which swear words are no longer used merely as emotional outbursts but also function as communicative resources that reflect relational openness, facilitate intimacy, and contribute to changes in the boundaries of politeness norms in Generation Z communication.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the film Melukis Luka represents the psychological impact experienced by ethnic Chinese survivors of the May 1998 tragedy through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with documentation techniques and sign analysis consisting of signs, objects, and interpretants in the film's scenes. The results of the study indicate that the film Melukis Luka represents four main forms of psychological impact, namely post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), excessive anxiety, personality disorders, and difficulties in regulating emotions and behavior. These impacts are depicted through the traumatic experiences of the character Hanry such as nightmares, fear of crowds, withdrawal behavior, and wariness of strangers as a response to the loss of family during the riots. This study concludes that Melukis Luka functions not only as a medium of entertainment, but also as a space for historical reflection and social criticism of the long-term impact of the May 1998 tragedy that is still felt today. Thus, Melukis Luka presents a humanitarian narrative that invites the audience to not forget history and build empathy for survivors who continue to struggle to face their wounds.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of interpersonal communication as a conflict resolution strategy of the main character in the film Komang through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The method used is descriptive qualitative with scene analysis techniques to identify signs in the form of icons, indices, and symbols that appear in verbal and nonverbal interactions between characters. The results show that interpersonal communication in the film Komang develops through three main phases, namely relational closeness, peak conflict, and emotional reconciliation. In the initial phase, semiotic signs build closeness and trust as the foundation of the relationship, while in the conflict phase there is a shift in the meaning of communication marked by the dominance of emotions, silence, and interpersonal distance. The conflict resolution phase shows the restoration of interpersonal communication functions through acceptance, self-reflection, and emotional awareness, which are represented symbolically. This study confirms that interpersonal communication plays a strategic role in managing conflict not only through verbal utterances but also through nonverbal signs and visual symbols that gradually shape relational meaning.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has positioned online games as new spaces for virtual communication, particularly among university students. Roblox functions not only as an entertainment platform but also as a virtual social environment where interpersonal relationships are formed. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of virtual communication among students of Universitas Pancasakti Tegal on Roblox using the Social Penetration Theory approach. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, virtual observation, and documentation. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, focusing on active students who regularly play Roblox and engage in in-game communication. The findings reveal that students’ virtual communication on Roblox develops gradually in accordance with the stages of Social Penetration Theory, namely orientation, exploratory affective exchange, affective exchange, and stable exchange. Initial interactions are functional and superficial through text chat, which later evolve into more personal communication via voice chat and external platforms as trust and comfort increase. However, not all interactions reach deeper stages due to inhibiting factors such as toxic behavior and privacy concerns. This study highlights Roblox as a virtual communication space that facilitates the formation of interpersonal relationships within the metaverse context.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of gender power relations in the film Dua Hati Biru using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic analysis within the framework of Sylvia Walby’s theory of patriarchy. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes selected scenes that depict wage labor, domestic labor, and workplace discrimination. The findings reveal that wage labor functions as the primary source of legitimacy and authority within family relations, regardless of gender, positioning economic control as the central axis of power. Domestic labor is portrayed as essential to family stability yet remains symbolically undervalued and naturalized as a moral obligation, particularly for women. Meanwhile, workplace discrimination is represented through implicit institutional norms that stigmatize women’s marital and maternal identities, compelling adaptation rather than structural change. Through icons, indexes, and symbols, the film constructs a subtle yet persistent patriarchal logic that normalizes gender inequality. This study concludes that Dua Hati Biru not only reflects social realities but also participates in reproducing patriarchal ideology by sustaining hierarchical distinctions between productive and reproductive labor within both domestic and professional spheres.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of the reality of the arrogance of RI 36 Patwal officers on digital platforms through a framing analysis approach. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research examines how social media and online reporting shape public perceptions of the incident. The data collected were narratives, news articles, posts, and comments on social media related to the patwal arrogance incident. The analysis was conducted using the agih method to examine framing elements, such as syntactic structure, vocabulary, and rhetoric in the text that lead to the formation of public opinion. The results showed that the framing formed by social media and online news was more dominant towards a negative perception of Patwal officers, highlighting arrogant actions as a symbol of abuse of power. Despite clarification efforts from related parties, the public opinion formed through the initial framing remains difficult to change. This research reveals how framing on digital platforms has a major influence in shaping social reality and perceptions of the actions of state apparatus.
