Abstract

The lactation period is a natural process that occurs in mothers who have already given birth. During this period, it is not easy for mothers, as they need to have good knowledge in the process of providing exclusive breastfeeding. The high-quality protein and nutrition in maternal milk are crucial for providing newborn babies aged 0-6 months. According to data from the Ministry of Health (MoH), the prevalence of mothers who provide exclusive breastfeeding to their babies during the first few months decreased from 62.3% in 2013 to 50.2% in 2016, then increased to 64.2% in 2020. Meanwhile, the prevalence of babies consuming formula milk decreased from 50% in 2016 to 32.1% in 2020. This research aims to identify the factors influencing mothers to provide exclusive breastfeeding to babies aged 0-6 months at the Becora Community Health Center in Dili, in the year 2023. The researcher employs an analytical quantitative method with a cross-sectional study approach for this research. The bivariate analysis results show an influence between knowledge and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding based on the Chi-Square statistical analysis with a p-value of 0.00<0.05, and the Kendall's tau-b analysis indicates a result of 0.69, suggesting a strong influence between maternal knowledge and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding to babies. The Chi-Square statistical analysis results between maternal attitude and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding indicate a p-value of 0.05<0.05, and the contingency coefficient analysis shows a result of 0.21, suggesting a weaker influence between maternal attitude and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding. There is a strong influence between maternal knowledge and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding, and there is also a weaker influence between maternal attitude and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding.

Abstract

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health concern, with an estimated 10 million cases worldwide. In 2023, the Ministry of Health reported 5,650 TB cases in Timor-Leste, with 53% being new pulmonary cases with positive coughs. Objective: This study aims to analyse the adverse effects of anti-tuberculosis drugs in patients at the Guido Valadares National Hospital in 2024. Method: Using a cross-sectional analytical quantitative approach, the study involved 100 TB patients aged 15 and older, selected through snowball sampling. Data analysis employed SPSS, using cross-tabulation and chi-square tests. Result and Discussion: Results indicated a significant correlation between anti-tuberculosis drug use and mild adverse effects (p = 0.000, r = 0.690). Additionally, compliance levels were significantly associated with mild adverse effects (p = 0.019, r = 0.530). Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of monitoring adverse effects to prevent resistance and ensuring patient adherence through clear treatment guidelines.

Abstract

Introduction: Stunting is a chronic malnutrition problem caused by prolonged insufficient nutrient intake, indicated by height-for-age (HAZ) with a Z-score between –2 and –3 standard deviations. In 2020, UNICEF estimated that 149.2 million (22%) children under five worldwide were stunted. In Timor-Leste, the Ministry of Health reported a prevalence rate of 47.1%. Objective: This study aimed to identify factors influencing stunting among children under five in Citrana Village, Oe-Cusse Municipality, focusing on maternal education level, family income, maternal knowledge, exclusive breastfeeding, and complementary feeding. Methods: This analytical quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design with a purposive sample of 120 children under five. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS with Chi-square and Spearman rank correlation tests. Results and Discussion: The results showed significant correlations between stunting and maternal education (p = 0.00; r = 0.705), family income (p = 0.00; r = 0.931), maternal knowledge (p = 0.00; r = 0.690), exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.00; r = 0.543), and complementary feeding (p = 0.00; r = 0.602). Conclusions: To reduce stunting in Timor-Leste, targeted interventions are required to address direct causes, such as providing adequate nutrition and integrated management of childhood illness, and indirect causes, including improved sanitation, nutrition services, healthcare, parental education, and promotion of exclusive breastfeeding.
