Abstract

Hyperlipidemia is a metabolic disorder that indicates an increase in lipid levels in the body. Obesity, particularly central obesity, is correlated with hyperlipidemia and metabolic syndrome. Complications of hyperlipidemia such as coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure can be fatal if left untreated. Education and early detection of hyperlipidemia are crucial to prevent serious complications and maintain good health. This community service involved 50 elderly at Santa Anna Elderly Care Facility. All respondents participated in a series of activities, including education through posters, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests. Results of the diagnostic tests indicated 2 respondents had LDL levels ? 135 mg/dL, 6 respondents had HDL levels < 40 mg/dL, and 12 respondents had total cholesterol levels ? 200 mg/dL. The results of the education activities are expected to increase public awareness, all of which can reduce the overall healthcare burden when applied correctly and properly.

Abstract

Scabies is a contagious skin condition triggered by Sarcoptes scabiei varietas hominis. It is prevalent globally, particularly in tropical regions with low economic resources. The condition is commonly observed in densely populated environments characterized by close physical contact, such as Islamic boarding schools. This cross-sectional research was conducted in December 2023 at the Nurul Ilmi Darunnajah 14 Islamic Boarding School. This research involved 120 students who met the inclusion criteria. The questionnaire contains informed consent, personal identity, 15 questions to assess the level of personal hygiene, 15 questions to assess the respondent's level of knowledge, 8 statements, and 2 inspection points related to scabies diagnostic criteria. The data obtained will then be analyzed and researched according to the diagnostic criteria of the 2020 International Alliance for the Control of scabies consensus criteria for the diagnosis of scabies. The prevalence of scabies in this Islamic boarding school is 22.5% (27/120), with the risk factor for scabies being the level of personal hygiene, which includes individual cleanliness, environmental cleanliness, direct contact, ventilation, and humidity of the bedroom.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels resulting from dysfunction in insulin production or action. This disorder not only affects the metabolic system but also impacts skin health, specifically skin hydration, which reflects the skin's ability to maintain optimal moisture levels. Low skin hydration may increase the risk of infections and irritation. This Community Service initiative aims to enhance the understanding and awareness of the productive age group about the importance of routine blood sugar and skin hydration assessments. The method used in this community service activity follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach, incorporating education, routine screening, and program effectiveness evaluation. This activity shows that routine check-ups and education play a role in early detection of health risks in the productive age group.

Abstract

Anemia is a hematological disorder that is often not recognized in the adult age group. One lifestyle factor that can affect hemoglobin and hematocrit levels is the consumption of tea or coffee with meals, because the tannin and polyphenol content inhibits the absorption of non-heme iron. Early detection of hemoglobin and hematocrit levels accompanied by education about eating and drinking habits is an important strategy in preventing anemia. This screening activity is carried out using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach. Examination of hemoglobin and hematocrit levels is carried out using Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) from capillary blood. Education is provided to all participants through leaflets and group counseling regarding the effect of tea and coffee consumption on iron absorption. A total of 91 participants took part in this activity, consisting of 39.6% men and 60.4% women, with an average age of 47.4 years. The average hemoglobin was recorded at 11.2 ± 1.6 g/dL and hematocrit at 33.0 ± 4.7%. As many as 42.9% of participants experienced anemia based on hemoglobin levels below normal values according to gender. Hemoglobin and hematocrit examinations successfully identified a significant proportion of individuals at risk of anemia. Education on the right time to consume tea or coffee and increasing consumption of foods rich in iron and vitamin C are preventive interventions that can be applied to maintain optimal hematological status.
