Abstract

Public open spaces contain various features that have psychological effects on human mental health. Water, as one of the key elements in landscape design, not only enhances aesthetics but also provides sensory stimulation, social interaction, and psychological benefits. It possesses therapeutic qualities that promote relaxation and reduce stress. Given the rising prevalence of mental health issues among adolescents in Bali, public open spaces incorporating waterscapes play a crucial role. The concept of a "healing waterscape" can be applied in such spaces, where environmental elements are strategically designed to improve mental well-being through psychological approaches. However, no clear criteria for healing waterscape design have been formulated, and it remains unclear whether such criteria are being applied in the waterscapes of public open spaces in Denpasar City and Klungkung Regency. This study aims to establish criteria for healing waterscape design in public open spaces and assess the extent to which these criteria are implemented in Denpasar City and Klungkung Regency. Using a mixed-methods data analysis with JMP software, the study identifies four key variables in healing waterscape design: social, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional factors. The design criteria that should be considered for public space waterscapes in Denpasar and Klungkung include activity diversity, site characteristics, spatial variety, acoustics, water shape, movement, flow, lighting and signage, and both biotic and abiotic components.

Abstract

All activities that occur in public open spaces are basically forms of human expression as social beings who always have a deep relationship with the environment in meeting physical, psychological and social needs. Referring to mental health, the role of public open space is very important nowadays considering the number of teenagers with mental disorders in Indonesia, especially in Bali is very high. The role of public open spaces in improving the mental health of visitors is needed to reduce the prevalence of depression. The concept of ecotherapy in public open spaces can be implemented to promote mental health through human interaction with green spaces. This study aims to formulate ecotherapy design criteria in public open spaces and find out the design elements of public open spaces in Denpasar City and Klungkung Regency that need to be adjusted to be able to implement the ecotherapy concept. A synthesis of various ecotherapy theories and the link between public open spaces and mental health, as well as various studies or studies that have been conducted previously were carried out to formulate ecotherapy design indicators and sub-indicators in public open spaces. The research method used is mixed methods, by applying qualitative and quantitative approaches. The results of the study concluded that the two public open spaces which are the objects of study need to adjust the accessibility criteria, location, zoning, parking, furniture, facilities, and sign systems.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the application of the Salutogenic framework in the architectural design of Bali Provincial Mental Hospital’s Bisma ward, focusing on improving mental health recovery through better environmental design. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research evaluates the ward based on the Sense of Coherence (SOC) components—Manageability, Comprehensibility, and Meaningfulness. The findings reveal that the Manageability component, which emphasizes patient control over their environment, scored the lowest, with seven out of eleven criteria falling below 70%. Key issues include centralized nurse stations, inadequate patient monitoring spaces, and poor accessibility for patients with disabilities. To address these gaps, the study provides recommendations such as decentralizing nurse stations, improving safety features without creating a prison-like atmosphere, and enhancing barrier-free accessibility. While Comprehensibility and Meaningfulness scored higher, there is still room for improvement in reducing spatial uncertainty and fostering meaningful engagement. The study’s design recommendations aim to create a more supportive and empowering environment, aligning with Salutogenic principles to enhance patient recovery.
