Abstract

Abstract

The material value scale (MVS) and the aspiration index (AI) are among the most prominent measurements of materialism in research. As the names indicate, the MVS measures materialism in terms of materialistic values, whereas AI measures it in the matter of aspirations. Although both instruments have been widely used in research, the question of whether materialistic values and aspirations are independent of each other remains open for examination. The answer to this question is important, considering the inconsistencies in the results of past research. Therefore, this study aims to assess the construct's similarity and dissimilarity between both self-report materialism measurements resulting from exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The study was conducted online in Indonesia in 2019, with 610 participants, Indonesian version of MVS and AI, the software of Jamovi and R Studio. The analysis consisted of the Bartlett test, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test, parallel analysis, minimum rank factor analysis, EFA, and reliability (Cronbach’s α). The result showed there was an intersection, but each measurement had a portion of each independence higher, hence was no sufficient evidence of similarity between both materialism constructs. The construct of materialism as value and materialism as aspiration is proposed as different. Limitations of the study and implications for research were discussed.

Abstract

The negative emotional impact of climate change has been reported in numerous studies. However, the research on the topic in Indonesia is limited, partly due to the absence of a valid scale relating to the Indonesian context. This study aims to adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Climate Anxiety Scale. The adaptation of the scale into Indonesian was made concerning the International Translating Commission. The study involved 306 young people aged 18 to 35 (M= 21.01, 80.4% female) from February to June 2023. Psychometric property analysis consisted of internal consistency, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The results indicate satisfactory reliability (Cronbach’s α = .91; McDonald’s ω = .91). Although most items (apart from FI5) behaved similarly to the original 2-factor structure based on EFA, they did not achieve a reasonable fit based on CFA. Therefore, the authors carefully made modifications based on modified indices of the 2-factor structure to achieve reasonable local fit measurements. The authors recommend examining the original structure using different sample categories and approaches (e.g., criterion validity) in the Indonesian sample.

Abstract

________________________________________________________________________________________ The literacy level of high school students in Indonesia remains relatively low and has not demonstrated stable progress over recent years. National data indicate a decline in literacy scores during the 2021–2022 period across various educational groups, including religious schools, special needs schools, and general high schools. Although improvements were observed in the subsequent year, this condition highlights the urgent need for sustained efforts to enhance literacy at the senior high school level. This study aims to analyze the influence of school policy programs on substance abuse prevention and the sense of safety within schools on students’ literacy achievements. The data were drawn from the 2023 Education Report, involving 6,553 student respondents. The analysis employed multiple linear regression and mediation analysis using the JASP software. The findings reveal that school-based substance abuse prevention programs have a positive effect on students’ sense of safety at school. Furthermore, this sense of safety significantly mediates the relationship between the programs and students’ literacy outcomes (partial mediation; p < 0.001). Additionally, both variables simultaneously influence students’ literacy levels. These results emphasize the importance of fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment to enhance students’ literacy achievements. This study recommends the development of integrated policies that combine literacy promotion, mental health initiatives, and substance abuse prevention programs as part of broader efforts to establish a positive and conducive learning climate for all school community members. Keywords:  learning environment survey, literacy, sense of safety, substance abuse
