Abstract

The number of teenagers in Indonesia using social media has been increasing over time, along with the positive impact they have experienced. Through it, they can communicate interpersonally, in groups, and even as a business medium. However, negative impacts can arise if they are not cautious in using social media, such as addiction to social media, using devices not at the appropriate time and place, and cyber bullying. To prevent the negative impact of social media on adolescents, this community service activity aims to provide psychoeducation for SMU Negeri 3 Kediri students to be responsible in social media. The implementation of psychoeducation by providing material, questions and answers, along with a pre-test and post-test consisting of 5 questions about understanding digital literacy and the use of social media. The number of students who participated in psychoeducation activities was 68 students. The test results were analyzed by paired sample t-test using Jamovi software version 2.3.21 for Mac. The t-test results show that the average difference between the pre-test and post-test is very small, -0.147 and the significance value is 0.105. This indicates no significant change in the understanding of the wise use of social media before and after psychoeducation. This happens because students already have a pretty good knowledge about the use of social media.

Abstract

The negative emotional impact of climate change has been reported in numerous studies. However, the research on the topic in Indonesia is limited, partly due to the absence of a valid scale relating to the Indonesian context. This study aims to adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Climate Anxiety Scale. The adaptation of the scale into Indonesian was made concerning the International Translating Commission. The study involved 306 young people aged 18 to 35 (M= 21.01, 80.4% female) from February to June 2023. Psychometric property analysis consisted of internal consistency, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The results indicate satisfactory reliability (Cronbach’s α = .91; McDonald’s ω = .91). Although most items (apart from FI5) behaved similarly to the original 2-factor structure based on EFA, they did not achieve a reasonable fit based on CFA. Therefore, the authors carefully made modifications based on modified indices of the 2-factor structure to achieve reasonable local fit measurements. The authors recommend examining the original structure using different sample categories and approaches (e.g., criterion validity) in the Indonesian sample.

Abstract

Several studies have investigated the mental health impacts of climate change, with only a few examining the effect of social media use on climate anxiety. The spread of information through social media can exacerbate anxiety, including climate change anxiety. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the influence of social media use on climate anxiety among emerging adults. A cross-sectional design was used, with data collected from both males (n = 55) and females (n = 225). Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire that included demographic characteristics, the Social Media Use Integration Scale, and the Climate Anxiety Scale. Data were analyzed using a moderator analysis technique. The results showed social media use significantly predicted climate anxiety among emerging adults, confirming that higher social media use could directly increase climate anxiety. However, gender had no significant moderating effect on the relationship. These results had important theoretical and practical implications for understanding climate anxiety, especially in the digital era.

Abstract

The demands of various academic assignments, both individual and group assignments, in the transition period of the third semester can lead to academic burnout due to several factors. The aim of this research is to determine specific factors that trigger burnout in third semester students at Surabaya State University and the impact on students, including their physical, psychological and daily aspects. This research used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and a total of three participants aged 19 to 21 years. The data collection technique was carried out using semi-structured interview techniques and data validation was carried out through member checking. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The study found two major themes, namely the factors that cause academic burnout and the impact of academic burnout. Factors causing burnout in the three participants were divided into two, namely situational factors which include workload, supervision, and community, as well as individual factors which include personality and individual behavior towards the responsibilities. Meanwhile, the impact of burnout includes psychological, physical and daily aspects. Active action is needed to overcome academic burnout experienced by students to improve psychological well-being in the campus environment.

Abstract

Abstract This study was conducted to investigate the effect of social support on loneliness, with gender as a moderator variable, among sojourning university students. The dynamics experienced by sojourning students are highly complex, and one of the significant challenges they face is loneliness. Social support is identified as a factor that can influence the level of loneliness. Gender was included as a moderator to examine the strength of the relationship between social support and loneliness levels. This research employed a quantitative approach with a Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) design. The study's population consisted of 400 individuals, comprising 200 females and 200 males. Purposive sampling was used to select participants, with inclusion criteria being individuals aged 18–25 years who are sojourning students in Surabaya. The instruments used were the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 (Russell, 1996) and the Social Support Scale (Sarafino & Smith, 2011). The results indicated that social support explained 60% of the variance in loneliness levels; however, gender did not show a significant moderating effect. The implications of these findings underline the importance of social support in reducing loneliness levels in out-of-town students, indicating that obtaining good social support will effectively reduce loneliness levels, regardless of the gender of out-of-town students.

Abstract

Emotion is a psychological aspect that influences people's actions and behaviors. Anger is one of the negative emotions that can arise due to various factors, including criticism. Individuals have a different threshold for criticism called sensitivity to criticism. This study aims to examine the effect of giving criticism on one's anger and the impact of sensitivity to criticism to participants’ level of anger. This research used a mixed-method approach through experimental methods, interviews, and observations. The experiment research design used was a pre-test post-test control group design. The participants involved 15 undergraduates allocated into experimental group (8 participants) and control group (7 participants). The instruments used to measure anger was the adaptation of STAXI developed by Spielberger, and the sensitivity to criticism scale was used to measure sensitivity to criticism. The results showed no effect of giving criticism on increasing anger in the experimental group. In addition, Pearson correlation results between sensitivity to criticism and anger showed no impact of sensitivity to criticism on their anger. However, the interview noticed that participants experienced anxiety, anger, and fear. Instead of not feeling anger, the subject tried to hold back the feelings of anger and had similar experiences so that the criticism given had no effect. Similar to the interview result, we observed that participants showed multiple signs of anxiety such as fiddling their fingers and toes or showing a worried look.

Abstract

Objective: Indonesia ranks third as the country with the most social media users, with emerging adults making up the largest group. On average, Indonesians spend almost 6 hours a day playing social media. This condition can cause both physical and psychological problems. One of the impacts of excessive social media use is Social Media Fatigue (SMF). The level of SMF is influenced by several factors, one of which is Fear of Missing Out (FoMo), which is a fear of missing out on experiences that others are enjoying. SMF and FoMo can significantly impact an individual's mental health. The link between the two conditions is clear, but there is little in-depth research linking the two. This study aimed to explore the association of Fear of Missing out (FoMo) with Social Media Fatigue (SMF) among emerging adults. Method: A cross-sectional study design was conducted among 157 men and women emerging adults. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire that consisted of demographic characteristics, Fear of Missing Out scale, and Social Media Fatigue scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and Pearson Correlation statistic technique. Results: Descriptive analysis results showed that men showed a higher tendency of both fear of missing out and social media fatigue compared to women. Further, a significant yet moderate correlation was found between FoMo and SMF among emerging adults. Novelty: This study contributed to explore further on the relationship between fear of missing out (FoMo) and social media fatigue specifically among emerging adults.

Abstract

Self-adjustment is a crucial ability that determines the success of new students in adapting to the environment of Islamic boarding schools, which differ from their home life in terms of rules, values, and social interaction patterns. This transition often creates emotional and social challenges that can affect students’ psychological well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of peer social support on the self-adjustment of new students at three Islamic boarding schools in Surabaya. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design involving 101 new students who had lived in dormitories for less than six months. The results showed that peer social support had a positive and significant effect on self-adjustment (r = 0.530; p < 0.001; R² = 0.281). Students who received emotional, acceptance, and tangible support from peers demonstrated better adaptation in social, academic, and spiritual domains. These findings support Cohen and Hoberman’s theory that social support acts as a psychological buffer in stressful adaptation processes. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of interpersonal relationships in enhancing students’ well-being. The implications suggest the need for developing peer-based counseling and support programs to help new students adapt more effectively within Islamic boarding school environments.
