Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic degenerative disease that many people suffer from. In several studies, coastal and fishing community groups are said to have a fairly high prevalence of hypertension when compared with other community groups. The aim of this study was to determine the factors associated with the incidence of hypertension in fishermen. This type of research is quantitative with a cross sectional design. The population in this study were all fishermen in Titawaai Village, Nusalaut District, Central Maluku Regency. Determining the sample in this study used a total sampling technique totaling 58 respondents. The research results showed that there was a relationship between sodium consumption and the incidence of hypertension with ρ value = 0.000, a relationship between smoking habits and the incidence of hypertension with ρ value = 0.002, a relationship between caffeine consumption and the incidence of hypertension with ρ value = 0.004, a relationship between stress and the incidence of hypertension with ρ value = 0.012. The conclusion of this research is that there is a relationship between sodium consumption, smoking habits, caffeine consumption and tres with the incidence of hypertension. It is recommended that existing health facilities in the community be able to improve health services by ordering them to maritime communities.

Abstract

To control blood pressure, non-pharmacological measures are needed, one of which is progressive muscle relaxation. This action aims to relax the muscles so that it can lower blood pressure. This study aimed to analyze the impact of progressive muscle relaxation in reducing blood pressure in coastal communities who suffer from hypertension. The design of this research was pretest and posttest with control group. This study involved 66 hypertension sufferers who were selected using a purposive sampling technique, who were then divided into intervention and control groups, each consisting of 33 people. In both groups, blood pressure was measured in the pre- and post-intervention phases. Next, the data was analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results of the analysis showed the p-value in the intervention group = 0.000; while in the control group = 1,000. It was concluded that progressive muscle relaxation is effective in reducing blood pressure in coastal communities who experience hypertension. Keywords: hypertension; progressive muscle relaxation; coastal communities ABSTRAK Untuk mengontrol tekanan darah perlu adanya tindakan nonfarmakologi yang salah satu pilihannya adalah progressive muscle relaxation. Abstract

Smoking behavior among adolescents remains a major public health issue due to its high prevalence and potential long-term effects on physical, psychological, and social health. One key factor influencing adolescent behavior is the family environment. A family approach that incorporates effective communication, parental supervision, role modeling, emotional support, and consistent enforcement of rules is believed to significantly impact the prevention and reduction of smoking behavior in adolescents. This study aims to analyze the effect of a family approach on smoking behavior in adolescents. Adolescents who experience open communication, good supervision, and emotional support from their families tend to exhibit stronger self-control and are more likely to resist peer pressure to smoke. The findings suggest that an optimal family approach is crucial in shaping healthy behavior in adolescents and serves as an effective strategy in smoking prevention efforts. This approach not only helps in reducing smoking behavior but also fosters overall well-being by creating a supportive family environment. In conclusion, family involvement plays an essential role in promoting healthier behaviors in adolescents and preventing smoking, contributing significantly to public health improvement

Abstract

The challenge of health development in Indonesia is the shift in disease patterns, where the burden of disease is no longer dominated by infectious diseases but also by non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, especially in coastal areas where access to healthcare services is difficult. Therefore, non-pharmacological treatments are needed to address healthcare accessibility for coastal communities, namely PMR and SDBE therapies. This study aims to compare PMR and SDBE therapies in reducing hypertension among coastal communities. The method used is a quasi-experimental design, specifically a randomized pretest and posttest three-group design without a control group. The sample size consisted of 90 respondents, with 30 respondents in each intervention group, selected using purposive sampling techniques. The instruments used included questionnaires and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and ANOVA. Statistical tests showed that PMR had a very significant effect on reducing blood pressure, SDBE also had an effect on reducing blood pressure, and both PMR and SDBE influenced blood pressure reduction in coastal communities. The ANOVA test results indicated a significant difference in the mean reduction of blood pressure among the groups studied, with a p-value of 0.002. PMR, SDBE, and the combination of both interventions were all effective in lowering blood pressure, showing differences among the three interventions.

Abstract

Hypertension is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it generally develops without clear symptoms, despite posing serious risks to public health. The condition affects communities in many countries, including Indonesia and Maluku Province, highlighting the need for continuous health promotion and preventive interventions. This community outreach initiative was conducted in Seruawan Village, Kairatu District, with the aim of improving residents’ knowledge, increasing awareness, and encouraging behavioral changes related to hypertension prevention. The activity consisted of three main stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. A total of 37 residents participated actively and enthusiastically throughout the program. Educational materials covered hypertension risk factors, early detection, healthy lifestyles, and preventive practices. Evaluation results showed a substantial increase in participants’ knowledge. Before the educational session, only 16.2% of residents demonstrated a good level of understanding, whereas after the intervention, this proportion increased to 81.1%. These findings indicate that structured health education effectively strengthens community understanding and supports sustainable preventive behavior against hypertension.

Abstract

The main problems that often occur in people with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) are stress and an increase in blood sugar. Uncontrolled stress for a long time can lead to an increase in blood sugar levels, which can lead to various complications. One of the physical activities that can be done with relaxation is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is an intervention that can be done in people with diabetes. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) on increasing stress and blood sugar levels. The research design used a quasi-experimental approach with a pre-post-test control group design approach. The sample consisted of 36 respondents who were divided into 18 intervention groups and 18 control groups. The group was given a therapeutic intervention for 1 week with a duration of 2 times a day, namely in the morning and afternoon for 10-15 minutes. The instruments used are a glucometer, blood sugar level observation sheet, and Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS) questionnaire. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test and Paired t-test to see pair data. Then for the research group, the data used the Man-Whitney Test. The results showed that there was a significant effect on decreasing blood pressure (p=0.013) and that there was an effect on decreasing blood sugar levels (p=0.034). Conclusion: Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) affects reducing stress and blood sugar levels in Type 2 DM patients.
