Abstract

This research, of significant importance, aims to investigate the prevailing themes and research methods employed in master's theses in Arabic Language Education in Indonesia from 2011 to 2021. The study also seeks to identify the factors influencing the selection of specific themes and methods. A descriptive qualitative approach is utilized, with the researcher acting as the main instrument for mapping based on a predetermined grid. The primary data for this study consists of 1083 archived theses from Master of Arabic Language Education students at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, and UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, accessible through the e-repositories of each university. The findings, of great significance, indicate that the predominant theme in these master's theses is the study of Arabic teaching materials, accounting for 308 titles or 28.44% of the total. The second central theme is learning design research, with 143 titles (13.20%), followed by Arabic teaching methods with 85 titles (7.85%). Regarding research methods, the research and development (R&D) method dominates the master's theses in Arabic Education, comprising 379 titles (35.05%). Descriptive methods rank second with 319 titles (29.48%), followed by case studies with 190 titles (17.56%). Less commonly used research methods include character studies, which have only six titles (0.55%), and survey methods with three titles (0.28%). The dominance of specific themes and research methods in Arabic education indicates a preference for practical field research with socio-educational relevance and intellectual-conceptual approaches. Most of the mentioned research is conducted at UIN Malang, which may be attributed to the program's orientation towards product-based research and its willingness to accept thesis titles based on students' capabilities, unlike other study programs.

Abstract

Difficulty in writing descriptive text is still a problem experienced by high school students. The aim of this research is to find out the mistakes and difficulties that students most often experience in writing descriptive texts. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The sample for this research consisted of 36 tenth grade students from a state high school and was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used in this research were writing tests and interviews with data analysis techniques using descriptive statistics. The research results showed that 0.1% of students made mistakes in the content aspect, 0.1% in the organizational aspect, 8.3% in vocabulary, 23.5% in language use, and 68% in mechanics. The results of the analysis show that the largest number of errors is in the mechanical aspect with a total of 1085 errors. The difficulties experienced by students in writing descriptive texts lie in the aspects of vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. This is due to lack of vocabulary, grammar skills, and writing in a hurry. To overcome this problem, students can learn and practice English through online platforms such as Google Translate and YouTube. Students must also increase their focus on writing practice and always proofread their writing. Through this research, it is necessary to develop a learning program that focuses on increasing vocabulary, grammar skills, and applying appropriate mechanics in writing descriptive texts for high school students.

Abstract

Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958) presents a powerful exploration of how gender identity is constructed through social control, visual surveillance, and patriarchal desire. Using Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity and feminist film theory, the film reveals femininity not as an innate truth but as a repeated performance shaped by societal norms. Scottie Ferguson’s obsessive transformation of Judy Barton into Madeleine Elster becomes a metaphor for the coercive forces that dictate how women should appear and behave. Cinematic elements such as costume, mirrors, spirals, and the male gaze illustrate the ways in which female identity is molded, fragmented, and objectified. Judy’s psychological distress and eventual death expose the emotional cost of being forced to perform a role that erases the self. The film’s visual repetition and symbolic motifs underscore the instability of gender identity and the violence of imposed norms. Rather than offering closure, Vertigo leaves viewers with a critique of gender expectations and a reflection on the fragile nature of identity. Through its narrative and visual language, the film challenges fixed categories of gender and remains deeply relevant to discussions of power, control, and resistance in cultural representation. Abstract

Ecocritical studies in popular media are becoming more and more pertinent due to the pressing need to address environmental challenges and the changing dynamic between technology and nature. This essay uses Greg Garrard's theoretical framework to examine how identity and belonging are portrayed in Chris Sanders's animated feature The Wild Robot (2024) from an ecocritical perspective. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the study gathers information by watching the movie and literature review several times in a methodical manner and concentrating on significant moments, conversations, and visual components that illustrate how technology (Roz) and nature interact. The results show that by showing Roz's journey from an outsider to a caring member of the ecosystem, the movie subverts the traditional lines separating the natural from the artificial, fostering ecological empathy and awareness. By showing how animated films may promote fresh viewpoints on environmental stewardship and peaceful cohabitation between technology and nature, this study advances ecocritical theory. Incorporating ecocritical narratives into educational and cultural discourse can improve public knowledge of ecological challenges, according to the study's conclusion, which also offers suggestions for more interdisciplinary research.

Abstract

Directed by David Fincher, Fight Club (1999) presents a complex and provocative critique of consumer culture, masculinity, and resistance within a postmodern capitalist society. This study examines how the film constructs and destabilizes male identity by employing an integrated framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). Using Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodal theory, the analysis focuses on how ideological meanings are produced through the interaction of linguistic discourse and cinematic techniques. The findings reveal that consumerism reduces identity to a market-driven commodity, while masculinity is represented as fragmented, unstable, and continuously negotiated through discourse and visual symbolism. Acts of resistance, particularly those embodied by Fight Club and Project Mayhem, are shown to function as contradictory forms of liberation that ultimately reproduce new structures of control. By analyzing dialogue, narration, visual imagery, sound design, and mise-en-scène, this study demonstrates that masculinity in Fight Club operates not merely as a narrative theme but as a discursive formation shaped by power relations across multiple semiotic modes. This research contributes methodologically to film discourse studies by highlighting the analytical value of integrating CDA and MDA in examining ideology, identity, and resistance in contemporary media texts. Abstract

Speaking assessment is essential for evaluating EFL learners’ communicative competence, yet it remains challenging due to issues of validity, reliability, and authenticity. This study conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of empirical research on speaking assessment practices in EFL contexts from 2015 to 2025, using the SALSA framework for methodological rigor. Fourteen studies were analysed thematically. The findings show that performance-based and technology-integrated assessments are the most dominant approaches, while rater bias, limited assessment literacy, and learner anxiety remain key challenges. The review highlights the importance of balancing fairness, practicality, and authenticity in evaluating speaking performance. It also emphasizes the potential of formative and technology-supported assessments to enhance feedback and learner engagement. The results also provide valuable insights for EFL teachers and policymakers in developing more effective and equitable speaking assessment practices. Pedagogically, the review underscores the need to strengthen teachers’ assessment literacy so that they can design and apply rubrics, provide formative feedback, and interpret speaking scores accurately. Theoretically, this study contributes to the understanding of how various assessment practices interact within the broader EFL teaching-learning process. Future studies are encouraged to explore longitudinal evidence of how integrated assessment frameworks influence EFL learners sustained speaking improvement, motivation, and classroom participation.
