Abstract

The software AntConc has become a freeware and multi-platform tool used in corpus-based linguistic research. Corpus linguistics itself is identified as a methodology consisting of various related methods that can be used by scholars with different theoretical tendencies. This research aims to determine the formulas used in searching regular expressions in news articles. The news data was collected from a known media source called BBC News. The research results indicate that Regex in Antconc can be performed in various ways, including: (1) To find words starting with 'sp,' the formula ^sp[a-z] can be used, (2) To find words starting with 'st' and ending with 'ed,' the formula ^st[a-z]*ed can be used, (3) To find words ending with '-ing,' the formula [a-z]*ing can be used, (4) To find a phrase containing two words, with the first word starting with the letter 's' and the second word starting with the letter 't,' the formula ^s[a-z] ^t[a-z] can be used.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kategorisasi dan makna makanan tradisional dalam bahasa Batak Toba. Data yang digunakan adalah data lisan dan data tulis. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan metode simak dan metode cakap. Data dikumpulkan berdasarkan beberapa kategori yaitu bahan, bentuk, ukuran, penampilan dan tujuan. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode agih untuk mengidentifikasi butir leksikal yang tergolong makanan tradisional untuk menetapkan kategorisasinya. Selanjutnya data dianalisis menggunakan teori metabahasa semantik alami. Teori MSA digunakan untuk menganalisis komponen makna secara rinci melalui teknik parafrase. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa makanan tradisional Batak Toba dikategorikan atas: (1) makanan tradisional pada peristiwa khusus / upacara-upacara (dekke arsik, saksang, lapet, dekke antinombur, itak gurgur, dekke naniura, manuk napinadar, itak hinopingan) dan (2) makanan tradisional untuk konsumsi sehari-hari (mi gomak, sasagun). Makna makanan tradisional Batak Toba dibentuk oleh elemen-elemen asali, yaitu SESUATU, ADA, KARENA SESEORANG, INGIN dengan komponen makna “Makanan [M] ini ada karena seseorang membuatnya”.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the semiotic meaning of traditional devices in the ‘marpege-pege’ tradition in the Padangsidimpuan Batak Angkola. The method used in this research is the ethnographic method as determined by Spradley. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews with elements of society and “suhut” the elements or parties holding the event. The data analysis method used is de Sausure analysis (1859) by interpreting two dichotomies: signifier and signified. The results of his research show that there are 6 traditional devices that support the traditional “marpege-pege” procession. The semiotic meanings contained in the 6 traditional devices are “amak lappisan” which means a special seat, namely an entity that has a high position, “pinggan godang” and “haronduk” which means a respect, “Sipulut” (sticky rice) and “inti” (coconut mixed with brown sugar) which means to tighten. The relationship between the entities in the “marpege-pege” tradition, “Burangir” (betel), “soda”, “pining” (betel nuts) and “gambir” means a form of gratitude, “timbako” (tobacco) or (cigarette) has the meaning as a form of appreciation for community leaders who have present at traditional processions and “Abit” (cloth) has a simple meaning.

Abstract

This study investigates the intersection of language and gender as represented in public spaces, focusing on the presence, absence, and patterns of inclusive language use. Drawing upon the framework of applied linguistics and critical discourse analysis, this research explores how public signage—across institutions, commercial areas, and communal facilities—embeds gender ideologies and either reinforces or challenges binary norms. Data were collected through a qualitative field survey and visual documentation of public signs in various domains, and analyzed thematically to identify linguistic patterns related to gender representation. The findings reveal that gender-exclusive and male-default language continues to dominate public communication in most observed settings, indicating a widespread lack of awareness or commitment to gender-inclusive principles. Phrases such as “he/she,” binary restroom labels, and job titles with marked gender (e.g., “chairman,” “saleswoman”) are still prevalent, subtly perpetuating the notion of gender essentialism. However, a minority of signs—particularly in educational institutions and certain private sectors—demonstrate emerging inclusive strategies, including the use of gender-neutral terms, inclusive pronouns (e.g., “they”), and visual symbols representing diverse gender identities. These instances signal a gradual shift in public language practices, albeit fragmented and inconsistently applied. This study affirms that public language functions not merely as a communicative tool, but as a site of ideological struggle where power relations and social norms are negotiated. As such, it carries significant implications for inclusive policy development, language planning, and sociolinguistic awareness campaigns. The research also highlights the need for institutional guidelines and educational initiatives to support more equitable and inclusive language use in public signage. Ultimately, this work contributes to a broader understanding of how inclusive linguistic practices in public space can promote social recognition, reduce marginalization, and foster a more inclusive society
