Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know whether the pictures in descriptive text can improve students’ reading comprehension or not at the Tenth Grade Students in SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk. The research design in this research was quasi-experimental using non-equivalent control group design. The Independent variable of this research was pictures and the dependent variable was students’ reading comprehension. The Population of this research all students of IPA in SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk of the Tenth Grade were about 216 students, each class consisted of 36 students and the sample of this research were X MIPA 1 and X MIPA 2. The instrument used of this research was test. This research has two classes, experimental class and was control class. The data were taken by giving pre-test and post-test both of classes. The data indicated that, there was a significant difference between students’ pre-test and post-test in the experimental class. The mean score of students’ pre-test of experimental class was (57.02) and the mean score of post-test was (77.97). In experimental class, mean score of post-test was higher than mean score of pre-test. The result of the calculation statistical hypothesis test showed tvalue was higher than ttable (6.618  1.667) where the formula of significance level df = 005. Therefore, it was concluded that there was a significance effect of using pictures to improve student’ reading comprehension in teaching descriptive text at the Tenth Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk.Keywords: Pictures; Students’ Reading Comprehension; Descriptive text.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether the vocabulary notebook is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. The method used to conduct this research is quasi experimental research. The population consist of 45 students of class VIII SMPN 2 Bulagi. Sampling was done by total sampling involving two classes, class A which is consist of 24 students as the experimental class and 1 students from class VIII B as the control class. In collecting data, researchers used test. After analyzing the data, the result showed that there was a significant difference between the results of increasing students’ vocabulary mastery using vocabulary notebook and those without vocabulary notebook. The score of pretest 58.6 in experimental class was increased significantly in the posttest 81.3. On the other hand, the pretest score in control class only increased from 56.0 to the posttest score 61.1. In addition, using 0.05 level of significant with 43 degree of freedom, it was found that the t-counted value 14.847 was greater than the t-table 2.016, so that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. It can concluded that the use of vocabulary notebooks is effective in increasing the students’ vocabulary at SMPN 2 Bulagi.

Abstract

This study aims to see the effect of Jigsaw techniques in improving students’ reading comprehension. The population in this research was students of X grade SMK Handayani Luwuk. The research sample involved all students using total sampling technique. The main instrument in collecting research data is test. Data analysis used t-test analysis to compare students’ means score. The calculation result shows that the t-counted value 8.271 is higher than the t-table 1.795. it means that improving students’ reading comprehension by applying Jigsaw technique was effective. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that the application of Jigsaw technique is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether diary activities can improve students’ writing skill or not. This research is also quantitative research using quasi experimental research design with non-equivalent control group design. The population of this research was student of SMPN 1 Luwuk grade VIII. The sample of this research was 50 students, 25 students from class VIIIa (experimental class) and 25 students from class VIIIb (controlled class). The instrument of this research was test, where it was divided into pre-test and post-test. Treatment was given after giving pre-test in experimental class for about six meetings. Five aspects were assessed in order to find out the result. They are content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanism. The result of shows that the t-test of 73.9644 was higher than the t-table of 1.6772 with a significance level of 0.05 with 48 degrees of freedom. Therefore, the hypothesis of “Diary writing can improve the writing skills of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Luwuk” is accepted. In conclusion, diary activities can be used to improve students’ writing skill at SMPN 1 Luwuk significantly.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify the enhancement of students' vocabulary mastery through the use of pictures at MTS Al-Qamariah Popidolon. The research used pre-experimental design. There were two variables in this research, the independent variable and dependent variable. The independent variable was the use of pictures and the dependent variable was the students’ vocabulary mastery. The population of this research was the eight grade at MTS Al- Qamariah Popidolon and the researcher used total sampling technique in selecting the sample. The data was collected by using test which was consist of pretest and posttest which was given to the students. Pretest was given in the first meeting, and then posttest in the last meeting after giving treatment by using pictures in enhancing students’ vocabulary.  After calculating the data, the results showed that the t-counted 14.716 was greater than the t-table 2.144. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. It can be concluded that there was an enhancement on students’ vocabulary using pictures at MTS Al-Qamariah Popidolon.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a component of language skills, besides that vocabulary is the basis of how students can speak, listen, read, and write. Therefore, the teacher is required to carry out learning and teaching vocabulary creatively, so it becomes more meaningful to attract students' interest to learn it. The purpose of this research is to figure out the teachers’ strategies in teaching vocabulary at SMAN 2 Luwuk and the importance of the strategies in helping the English teachers in teaching vocabulary at SMAN 2 Luwuk. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method with descriptive research design to address this issue. In collecting data, the researcher used two instruments: observation and interview. In analyzing the data, the researcher used several techniques: (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) drawing conclusion. Subjects in this research are English teachers at SMAN 2 Luwuk. Based on observation and interview the researcher found the teachers’ strategies in teaching vocabulary: using translation, using picture, word list, memorization, gesture, repetition, and mixing jokes. In teaching vocabulary, these strategies are very important for teachers. In conclusion, these strategies really help English teachers at SMAN 2 Luwuk to make learning becomes faster, easier, more enjoyable, and more effective.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the practice method given to students in the context of subject-verb agreement. The research method used is the descriptive qualitative method, which leads to an in-depth analysis of the common error patterns of the students, as well as to observe the development of students' understanding over time. The results of this study show that the subject-verb agreement learning method has a positive impact on students' understanding and enables them to master this concept well. The implication of this study is the importance of using effective learning methods in overcoming subject and verb agreement errors, which are important aspects of English grammar. With the right approach, students can improve their understanding of subject and verb rules in English, thus improving their overall language skills.

Abstract

This research aims at knowing whether the use of ESA is effective to increase the students' vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade at MTSN 1 Banggai or not. The research design of this study was quantitative research design with using quasi-experimental research. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of MTSN 1 Banggai. The research sample was chosen by using purposive sampling; class VIII A as the experimental class and class VIII B as the control class. Each class consist of 35 students. Test was used as the main instrument to collect data. The test was given twice in pretest and post-test. The results show that: 1) the mean score from pretest 52,34 in experimental class was significantly increased into 74,48 in post-test. While in control class, there were also an improvement but not as significant as in experimental class. The mean score of pretest 50,65 in control class was only increased in post-test become 57,60. 2) by applying signicance level 0,05 with degrees of freedom 68, the t-counted was 10,16 was greater than the t-table 1,66. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this study is accepted while the null hyphotesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that the ESA method is effective to increase students’ vocabulary mastery of Class VIII A at MTS Negeri 1 Banggai.
