Abstract

Land and peat forest fires in Indonesia are a serious environmental problem, especially in the years that experience the El Nino phenomenon. El Nino causes dry and hot conditions that trigger fires. One of the methods used to extinguish fires is water bombing, which is spraying water from the air using planes or helicopters. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of the water bombing method in dealing with land and peat forest fires in Indonesia. This study uses secondary data from various sources, such as government reports, research institutions, mass media, and non-governmental organizations. The data is then analyzed using descriptive, comparative, and evaluative methods. The results of the study show that the water bombing method has some advantages, such as fast, flexible, and able to reach areas that are difficult to access. However, this method also has some disadvantages, such as expensive, risky, and less effective in extinguishing fire in the peat soil. Therefore, this study recommends that the water bombing method should be used as one part of a comprehensive fire control strategy, which involves prevention, detection, and recovery. This study also suggests the need for improved coordination, regulation, and innovation in the use of the water bombing method in Indonesia.

Abstract

This service activity aims to explore the potential for utilizing wood waste and rejected palm kernels as alternative fuel for rocket stoves in Petuk Liti Village, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan. The background to this research is the urgent need for alternative energy sources that are cheaper and environmentally friendly, considering the increasing price of LPG gas and the limited access of rural communities to reliable energy sources. Utilizing wood waste and rejected palm kernels as fuel not only offers an economical solution, but also helps in waste management and reducing carbon emissions, which is in line with sustainable development goals. This service involves several important stages, starting from collecting and processing raw materials, developing and testing stoves, as well as the economic and environmental benefits of using alternative fuels. It is hoped that this activity can be implemented more widely in other areas that have limited access to conventional energy, as well as supporting the government's efforts to achieve national energy security and reduce carbon emissions. The output target of this service is to make a significant contribution to the development of renewable energy technology based on local resources, as well as providing a more environmentally friendly and economical alternative for the people of Petuk Liti Village.

Abstract

Peatlands are an ecosystem that has an important role in the environment, including carbon storage, biodiversity habitat, and water availability (Murdiyarso et al., 2010). However, peatlands are also very vulnerable to fire, especially in extreme dry season conditions (Page et al., 2002). Peatland fires can cause significant environmental losses, including greenhouse gas emissions, loss of biodiversity, and negative impacts on public health due to the smoke produced (Masykur et al., 2019). Therefore, efforts to prevent peatland fires are very important to maintain the sustainability of this ecosystem and public health. The hydram pump method was chosen as an innovative solution in this research because of its ability to pump water continuously without requiring an electricity or fuel source. This makes it a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative for wetting peatlands, which in turn can increase soil moisture and reduce the risk of fire (Wardhana et al., 2021). By utilizing this method, it is hoped that soil moisture can be maintained, making the land less susceptible to fire. The type of research used is experimental research. The research location was carried out at the Building Engineering Education Laboratory, FKIP UPR with a hydram pump and a drip irrigation system on differences in land elevation from plant water sources and water use efficiency. The target achieved is that this research will be published in the SINTA 5 and HKI Accredited Journals.

Abstract

This study aims to present a preliminary planning of a mining road in Ampah District, East Barito Regency, Central Kalimantan, based on topographic survey data obtained using a Total Station. The survey was conducted along a ±10.971-meter alignment traversing an area characterized by undulating to hilly terrain. The Total Station was used to accurately acquire positional and elevation data along the alignment, which was then utilized to develop the longitudinal profile and cross-sections as the basis for the geometric road design. The survey results revealed natural ground elevation variations ranging from approximately ±15 meters to ±109 meters, with significant elevation adjustments required in several segments. The longitudinal profile indicated that most of the alignment would require fill operations, particularly at STA 3+258, 3+903, and 10+775, where fill depths exceeded 6 meters. Conversely, cut areas were also identified in the initial segments of the alignment, as shown by green indicators on the profile drawings. The horizontal geometric design involved 24 curves, incorporating geometric control points such as PC (Point of Curvature), PT (Point of Tangent), and PI (Point of Intersection), as well as spiral curves to ensure smooth directional transitions. Meanwhile, drainage systems and slope stabilization measures were addressed through technical cross-sectional designs at several critical points. Overall, the use of the Total Station in this study has proven effective in producing high-quality survey data that serves as an accurate foundation for the initial planning of the mining road. These findings support the development of an efficient alignment design, well-suited to the terrain conditions and operational requirements of mining activities.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of skills training on the work readiness of Vocational High School (SMK) students in the construction industry. Even though many vocational school students have completed their education, in reality many are not ready to enter the world of work, especially in the construction sector which requires strong technical skills and professional attitudes. Therefore, skills training, including work-based learning (WBL) models, is important in preparing students to meet industry needs. The results of this research indicate that relevant and intensive skills training can improve students' competency and work readiness, although there are variations in the effectiveness of the training programs implemented.

Abstract

The availability of clean water is a basic need that must be met to ensure people's quality of life. The use of renewable energy, particularly through solar power plants (PLTS), offers an efficient and environmentally friendly solution. PLTS have the advantage of being an abundant energy source, being emission-free, and suitable for household applications in tropical regions like Indonesia, which experience high solar radiation intensity throughout the year (IEA, 2023; Mulyadi & Hartono, 2019). This research addresses the need for a solar-powered booster pump system integrated with a storage tank as a backup water source. The research was conducted in the Building Engineering Education Laboratory, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Palangka Raya University, designing a household water distribution system using a solar-powered booster pump integrated with a storage tank. Specific plans and targets include publication of this research in a SINTA-accredited journal, HKI, and a research video.

Abstract

Geographically, Petuk Liti Village is located within Pulang Pisau Regency and within the Kahayan Tengah District. This village also serves as a transportation hub between regencies, including Gunung Mas Regency, South Barito Regency, North Barito Regency, and Kapuas Regency. In agriculture, plantations, and fisheries, the residents of Petuk Liti Village primarily cultivate rubber, oil palm, and rattan trees. Manual spraying is still often carried out using conventional tools such as knapsack sprayers, which are manually operated or powered by fossil fuel engines. Besides being tiring, using these tools is inefficient in terms of time and energy, and contributes to carbon emissions that worsen environmental conditions (Putri & Santoso, 2020). With the increasing need for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technology, an innovative solution is needed, namely the implementation of solar panel-based electric sprayers. Through an educational and applied approach, this community service is expected to improve farmers' skills and awareness of the importance of transitioning to green energy in daily agricultural production activities. The targeted outputs of this community service are the manufacture of electric sprayers and the publication of articles in SINTA-accredited journals and HKI.
