Abstract

This community service aims to increase the understanding and awareness of the community, especially students and teachers at 'MIN Satu Kota Palangkaraya' School, about the dangers of spreading hoaxes as well as strategies to identify and deal with them. Hoaxes or false information are increasingly becoming a troubling threat with their ability to spread rapidly through social media and other digital platforms. Through a series of activities such as workshops and discussions, participants will be given an in-depth understanding of the importance of verifying information before disseminating it. In addition, they will also be equipped with critical skills to analyze the content they encounter online. Thus, it is hoped that the community, especially the younger generation who are active users of social media, will become more vigilant and responsible in disseminating information, and be able to distinguish between valid information and hoaxes. By involving schools as the center of education, the project also aims to strengthen digital literacy among students and teachers. As such, they will become effective in combating the spread of hoaxes, and help create a safer online environment filled with accurate and useful information.

Abstract

The integration of video games into education has garnered attention for its potential to enhance learning experiences, particularly in fostering engagement and autonomous skill development. This qualitative study investigates EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners' perceptions of using Disco Elysium, a narrative-driven role-playing game, as a supplementary tool for language learning. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, focusing on the experiences of EFL learners who engaged with the game's complex linguistic and narrative content. The findings reveal that participants perceive Disco Elysium as a unique and immersive learning medium, aiding in vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. However, challenges such as the game's advanced vocabulary, cultural references, and morally complex themes were also identified. By centering on learner perspectives, this study contributes to the limited research on the role of narrative-driven games in language learning. The results provide insights into how such games can be integrated into educational contexts to complement traditional EFL learning methods.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between informal study frequency and test scores among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners to determine whether non-traditional study habits contribute to academic performance. Employing a correlational research design, data were collected from a sample of EFL learners through self-reported study frequency surveys and standardized English test scores. The Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to analyze the data, given the non-normal distribution of the variables. The results reveal no statistically significant correlation between informal study frequency and test scores, as indicated by a weak Spearman’s rho and a high p-value. These findings suggest that informal study habits may not directly influence test performance in the observed sample, emphasizing the complexity of factors affecting EFL learners’ academic outcomes. While informal learning remains an essential aspect of language acquisition, its measurable impact on standardized assessments warrants further investigation. Future research could benefit from a larger sample size and the inclusion of additional variables, such as formal study practices, learner motivation, or access to resources, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how various factors interact to influence EFL test performance. This study highlights the importance of cautious interpretation when analyzing the role of informal learning in academic achievement.
