Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Maqashid Shari'ah review of the decision to delay marriage in the sandwich generation, which is based on rational considerations such as concerns about financial responsibility and the potential to form the next sandwich generation while they are of marriageable age. The literature review method was used with thematic analysis helping to identify and interpret the findings. The conclusions of this study show that concerns about financial hardship and fairness towards spouses are the main factors driving the decision to postpone marriage for the sandwich generation. Marriage in Islam is not a decision that should be forced on everyone without consideration, but must be based on readiness and ability both in terms of economic and mental readiness. Postponing marriage because it has already become a sandwich generation in order to break the chain of sandwich generation is a wise action to ensure that when marriage occurs, the individual is better prepared and able to carry out the role in family life in accordance with Islamic law in accordance with maqashid sharia.

Abstract

This article examines the background behind couples from various ethnic groups in Indonesia opting for unregistered marriages and their efforts to obtain legal recognition of their marital status from the state. The research aims to understand the motivations of couples from different cultural backgrounds when deciding to marry in secrecy and how they then seek to legalize their unions through court decisions on marital status confirmation. The method used in this study is field research with a descriptive qualitative approach. Primary data was obtained through in-depth interviews with 14 interethnic couples such as Minang, Batak and Javanese in Padang City who filed petitions for marital status confirmation to the local Class 1A Religious Court. The findings reveal that preferences over unregistered marriages are influenced by the social, cultural and religious backgrounds of each ethnic group. This condition necessitates contextual adjustments in providing legal solutions to the issue of unregistered marriages so that they can be accepted by all parties from the existing cultural diversity. In conclusion, marital status confirmation in Religious Courts can be an effective legal solution for interethnic couples with unregistered marriages in Indonesia to obtain formal recognition of their marital status. However, a profound understanding of the prevailing socio-cultural values in each community is needed so that decisions on marital status confirmation do not contradict and can be well accepted by all parties.

Abstract

This study examines the roles of husbands and wives in achieving gender equality within dual-income families. Three family types are identified based on employment status: (1) employed husband and unemployed wife, (2) both spouses employed, and (3) employed wife and unemployed husband. Focusing on the second category, this research employs a gender-based approach to analyze the dynamics of dual-career households. The findings reveal five key strategies for realizing gender equality in dual-income families: (1) collaborative decision-making processes, (2) application of socialist principles to household income management, (3) implementation of Ta’awun (mutual assistance) in all aspects of domestic life, (4) development of emotional management skills, and (5) reframing household responsibilities as positive contributions rather than burdens. These complementary roles are proposed as effective measures to address various forms of gender inequality within the family unit, including marginalization (role exclusion), subordination (power imbalance), stereotyping (subjective labeling), violence, and the double burden phenomenon. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on gender equality in domestic settings and offers practical strategies for couples navigating the complexities of balancing career and household responsibilities.

Abstract

Penyuluh Agama Islam (PAI) at the Kantor Urusan Agama (KUA) in Padang Pariaman Regency play a crucial role as the frontline in advocating for couples and resolving community conflicts. However, PAI has not yet functioned optimally, as reflected by the high divorce rate in this region, ranking second after Padang City in West Sumatra. Conflicting couples also tend to overlook the role of PAI and KUA as third parties that could help mediate their issues. To address this, the community service team sought to enhance PAI’s performance through ToT (Training of Trainers) mediator training, aimed at strengthening marital literacy and preserving marriages in the region. The approach used was group counseling with the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) method. Data analysis applied Miles and Huberman’s techniques, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, alongside the Logical Framework Approach (LFA) for a more structured analysis. This training is beneficial in preparing PAI to become professional mediators, skilled in resolving household conflicts and reducing the tendency of couples to pursue litigation through the Pengadilan Agama (Religious Court).
