Abstract

This study discusses how the Siliah Galanggang Arts Community utilizes social media to maintain and promote Minangkabau traditional arts. Using media ecology theory, this research analyzes the interactions and social media ecosystem within the community and its impact on the existence of traditional culture. A qualitative research method with a descriptive approach was used in this study, involving observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that social media plays a crucial role in sustaining traditional culture through various digital platforms. With approximately 200 members, this community utilizes a social media ecosystem comprising Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok to expand reach and promote traditional culture. Instagram is used as a visual documentation showcase, WhatsApp for intensive communication, and TikTok to attract a global audience. Through this interconnected media ecosystem, the Siliah Galanggang Arts Community has successfully created an effective platform for interacting with the audience and promoting traditional arts. Support from local officials, collaboration with art enthusiasts, and participation in cultural festivals and social events strengthen the community’s presence. Challenges in funding and relevance in the digital era are addressed with innovative strategies and educational programs. With a long-term vision to establish a cultural center, this community is committed to preserving and developing Minangkabau cultural heritage through education, training, and active participation in cultural activities.

Abstract

Kampung Tematik Elo Pukek, located along the coastal area of Padang, West Sumatra, is a culturally significant fishing village recognized for its traditional maelo pukek fishing method. Despite official recognition and its potential as a tourism and educational destination, the area remains under-promoted, particularly on digital platforms. This study investigates how social media can be utilized as a strategic communication tool to enhance the recognition and visibility of Kampung Tematik Elo Pukek. The objectives of this research are twofold: (1) to explore effective approaches for promoting the village through social media, and (2) to identify the socio-economic and cultural benefits of increased recognition for the local community. A qualitative research method was employed, involving in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation during the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) community service program. The findings highlight a gap in local digital literacy and community initiative, which limits consistent and impactful content creation on platforms such as Instagram. However, the research also demonstrates that even minimal, well-executed online promotion can positively influence tourism interest and community engagement. Increased recognition through social media has the potential to strengthen local identity, boost economic activity, and preserve traditional knowledge. This study concludes that community-based digital participation is essential for sustainable recognition and development of Kampung Tematik Elo Pukek.

Abstract

This study addresses a critical gap in the scholarship on the mediatization of political parties at the local level in post-Suharto Indonesia, namely the limited attention to how party–media interactions unfold outside the national arena and beyond Java-centric analyses. By examining the case of the Golkar Party in West Sumatra, this article shows how local dynamics shape distinctive patterns of political communication and mediatization. Drawing on in-depth interviews, intensive observation, and documentary analysis, including local newspaper coverage from Singgalang, the study demonstrates that Golkar has strategically employed mediatization to reinforce organizational networks, disseminate political and social programs, and mobilize electoral support. At the same time, the case reveals persistent constraints such as polarization, money politics, and dynastic influence, which highlight the limits of mediatization in advancing democratic consolidation at the local level. By situating the West Sumatra case against broader Indonesian patterns, this article makes a novel theoretical contribution to political mediatization by illustrating how local socio-political contexts condition party–media relations in ways that complicate assumptions derived from national-level studies.

Abstract

This activity aimed to educate students of SMA Negeri 1 Koto XI Tarusan, Pesisir Selatan, on stunting prevention, particularly regarding balanced nutrition, the dangers of cigarette smoke, and anemia in adolescent girls. The methods employed included interactive presentations, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and interactive quizzes to motivate and assess participants' understanding. The activity was conducted on October 16, 2024, involving 30 12th-grade students. The main stages of the activity consisted of three sessions: delivering material, group discussions facilitated by mentors, and quizzes to evaluate comprehension. Additionally, iron supplement tablets were distributed to adolescent girls as a preventive measure against anemia. Monitoring was conducted to observe changes in students' understanding and behavior before and after the activity. The results indicated a significant increase in students' understanding of stunting, including its risk factors and long-term impacts on children's futures. Before the socialization, students had limited knowledge, particularly about the relationship between diet, smoking habits, and anemia with stunting risks. After the activity, they gained a better understanding of the importance of balanced nutrition and early prevention efforts. Other findings revealed irregular breakfast habits and high smoking rates among male adolescents. In conclusion, this activity successfully raised students' awareness of stunting prevention. The participatory approach, through discussions and interactive quizzes, effectively created a learning atmosphere that was both enjoyable and informative. The expected impact is to serve as an initial step toward behavioral changes that support the sustainable health of the younger generation.
