Abstract

Background: In Surabaya, the edible bird's nest industry has witnessed significant growth in recent years, driven by increasing demand for this highly prized delicacy, known for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. As the industry expands, effective cleaning methods for edible bird's nests become paramount. Contaminants, impurities, and feathers can compromise the quality and purity of edible bird's nests, affecting their market value and consumer appeal. Contribution: In response to this challenge, applying SEAMON as an edible bird's nest cleanser has emerged as a promising solution. SEAMON, a specific cleaning agent for edible birds' nests, offers the potential to revolutionize the cleaning process within the edible birds' nest industry. This innovative approach addresses the cleanliness and hygiene standards required for edible bird's nests, ensuring that consumers receive the highest quality product. Method: The SEAMON application was carried out at the edible bird's nest industry in Surabaya, East Java, on July 2, 2023, with twelve samples of edible bird's nests with heavy feather characteristics. All samples were tested for nitrite analysis using a Genesys 30 visible spectrophotometer. Results: Based on the results of its application, this innovation has the potential as an edible bird’s nest cleaning agent to clean hydrogen peroxide residue and can reduce nitrite levels in the white edible bird’s nest. Conclusion: This washing liquid is the first cleanser specifically for white edible bird’s nests, and another advantage is that it is food grade, so edible bird’s nests cleaned with SEAMON is safe for human consumption.

Abstract

Trypanosoma evansi is a widespread hemoprotozoa that causes trypanosomiasis in both livestock and wildlife. One of the susceptible animals is the Sumatran elephant, which is included in the endangered species category. The infection of this parasite often develops into chronic and sub-clinical forms in elephants, therefore it may become unnoticed and hard to diagnose. This study aimed to analyze and evaluate the infection of T. evansi in semi-captive Sumatran elephants in Way Kambas National Park, Indonesia, using various diagnostic tests. The prevalence of T. evansi in a total of 53 Sumatran elephants was estimated using a card agglutination test for trypanosomiasis (CATT) in 2016. A longitudinal study was later conducted in 2019 using Giemsa stained blood smear (GSBS) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The results showed that 26.4% of samples (14/53) were positively detected by both CATT in 2016 and PCR in 2019, while GSBS was unable to detect the parasites in all samples. Furthermore, four individuals were confirmed to have persistent infections. This study concluded that the ability of CATT and PCR were more convincing over GSBS for the diagnosis of sub-clinical trypanosomiasis in Sumatran elephants. However, it is recommended to use a combination of CATT as a screening tool and PCR as a confirmatory test for reliable results.

Abstract

Abstract

The higher cholesterol content in quail eggs compared to chicken and duck eggs needs to be taken into account, so there is a need for research focused on this issue. The aim of this study was to prove that the use of probiotics (Pediococcus pentosaceus ABY 118, Lactococcus lactis) and acidifiers in quail can give positive results on reducing cholesterol and LDL and increasing HDL content in egg yolk. Thirty quails were randomized into three treatments with 10 replicates. The treatments studied were: P0 = Control (no probiotic and no acidifier); P1 = Probiotic 20 ml/liter drinking water + Acidifier 5 g/kg feed; P2 = Probiotic 40 ml/liter drinking water + Acidifier 10 g/kg feed. The results of this study showed that there was a significant difference between cholesterol from the P0 with P1 and P2 treatments. Cholesterol in P1 and P2 was significantly lower than P0. HDL in the P1 and P2 treatments was significantly higher than the P0 treatment. LDL in the P1 and P2 treatments was lower than the P0 treatment. The conclusion that can be drawn from the results of this study is that the use of probiotics and acidifiers can reduce cholesterol, increase HDL, and reduce LDL.
