Abstract

The present paper compares the efficiency of irrigated and rain-fed farming in North Sumatra using a household farm survey for the 2022 growing season. The authors use the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model, mean difference test, and Tobit regression. Empirical results reveal that irrigated farming is more efficient than rain-fed based on CRS and SE assumptions. However, access to irrigation was found to harm rice farming efficiency. Unequal distribution of water, scarcity of water during the growth period, and excess water during the harvest cause a decrease in the efficiency of irrigated farming. The age of the head of household, education, and access to credit was also found to harm technical efficiency. In contrast, the experience variable in participating in farmer groups because it has a positive impact on the efficiency of rice farming. The results provide valuable insights for transforming water management and strengthening the need for investment in irrigation infrastructure as a poverty alleviation mechanism and means to achieve rice farming sustainability in North Sumatra.

Abstract

Prostate disease is a significant health concern affecting men, particularly those over 35 years old. This community service activity aimed to increase knowledge and awareness about prostate disease among the congregation of GMI Manna Helvetia Medan through health education. The methods included educational presentations, motivational sessions, and question-and-answer discussions. The activity was attended by 45 participants aged 35-70 years. Results showed improved participant understanding of prostate disease symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of early detection. About 70% of participants committed to undergo prostate examination within the next 6 months. The educational approach through church community proved effective in delivering sensitive health information and raising awareness about the importance of regular check-ups.

Abstract

Deli Serdang Regency is the foremost rice grower in North Sumatra Province. The disparity in input access between male and female producers is responsible for the low rice output in this region. This study aimed to assess the technical efficiency of rice cultivation among male and female producers and identify the inefficiency sources among rice farmers in Deli Serdang Regency. We employ a stochastic frontier methodology to assess the technical efficiency of rice cultivation and utilize a statistical difference test to evaluate efficiency disparities between the two cohorts of rice growers. Primary data was gathered from 400 farmers during the 2022 planting season. The study revealed that male rice growers exhibited greater efficiency than their female counterparts. Our findings indicate that male rice producers inadequately utilized labor, fertilizer, land, and pesticides, but female rice producers inadequately utilized labor and fertilizer. Factors contributing to inefficiency also included the frequency of extensions, experience with FBOs, agricultural expertise, and access to irrigation. Given that women dedicate considerable time to domestic responsibilities and child-rearing, local governments may establish extension and training initiatives—such as guidance on fertilizer application, pest management, and agricultural record-keeping—alongside health programs routinely administered at integrated service posts (Posyandu) and family welfare programs (PKK). Extension services are essential to enhance the knowledge and abilities of women rice farmers, hence improving technical efficiency, household welfare, and the sustainability of rice growing in Deli Serdang Regency.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the technical efficiency value of smallholder oil palm plantations in Bandar Pasir Mandoge District and to identify the socio-economic factors that influence the technical efficiency of these plantations. The method of determining the area was purposive, specifically in Huta Padang Village and Huta Bagasan Village, Bandar Pasir Mandoge District, Asahan Regency. This sampling method employs simple random sampling. This research method employs the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach to estimate technical efficiency, and also utilises Tobit regression to evaluate the factors that influence efficiency. The results of this study are: (1) The technical efficiency value of smallholder oil palm plantations in Bandar Pasir Mandoge District based on the CRS assumption is 0.929, the technical efficiency value based on the VRS assumption is 0.941, the technical efficiency value SE is 0.987 which means that from the three variables, farmers are still not said to be efficient. The dominant production scale is in the IRS. The average input reduction is based on the CRS assumption (2) Socio-economic factors that significantly influence the technical efficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations in Bandar Pasir Mandoge District are education, farming experience and application of organic fertiliser. Socio-economic factors that have an insignificant influence on the technical efficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations in Bandar Pasir Mandoge District include gender, number of family members, distance to the PKS, and access to credit.

Abstract

Deli Serdang Regency is the leading rice producer in North Sumatra Province. The fact is that productivity in Deli Serdang Regency has stagnated. The problem experienced by farmers is that farmers still apply monoculture cropping patterns, namely farming with only one type of crop each year, climate change, and rising input prices. This study aims to determine whether rice farming is run by farmers in Deli Serdang Regency, whether or not it is efficient, and to find out the socio-economic factors that influence technical efficiency in Deli Serdang Regency. Our study uses the Data Envelopments Analysis (DEA) method and Tobit regression to measure the technical efficiency of 400 rice farmers. Our study found that the value of technical efficiency based on the CRS, VRS, and SE assumptions was 0.576, 0.806, and 0.717. These three values mean that inefficient rice farming must reduce inputs by 42.6%, 19.4%, and 28.3%, respectively, so inefficient farming becomes efficient. Our study also found that factors that increase technical efficiency are education, access to credit, access to irrigation, distance to markets, experience, and crop diversification. Factors reducing technical efficiency are climate change and rising input prices.

Abstract

Deli Serdang Regency is the leading rice producer in North Sumatra Province. The fact is that productivity in Deli Serdang Regency has stagnated. The problems farmers face isclimate change, access to irrigation, and rising input prices. This study aimed to determine the income of rice farmers, the percentage level of farmers doing livelihood diversification, and the variables that influence livelihood diversification. Four hundred people (especially rice farmers) became the research sample. The data analysis method is Multinomial Logit Analysis. The results of this study indicate that the average income is 1,221,680.5/month. The income of these rice farmers is below the Deli Serdang UMK. Then, our study found that 67% of rice farmers diversified their livelihoods. Finally, the results of our study show that the variables that have an essential influence on livelihood diversification in Deli Serdang Regency are land area, dependency ratio, counseling, membership of farmer groups, distance to markets, and farming experience.
