Abstract

Abstract Bahrul Maghfiroh High School is located in Malang City. To manifest the school's vision and mission, namely to produce graduates who are independent and have entrepreneurial skills, the school has a double-track program that aims to provide students with the skills to become entrepreneurs. Through this program, the school has succeeded in building business incubators, including the cultivation of mushrooms, quail, and fish, as well as coffee, chips, and yogurt processing. To support the double-track program, this community service activity aims to introduce the distillation process to students to produce essential oils, particularly citronella oil. This community service program was carried out in several stages, namely analyzing the school's needs regarding the double-track program, providing training to students, evaluating participant satisfaction, and planning the sustainability of activities. Training activities include an explanation of the basic principles of distillation, a demonstration of distillation/refining to produce citronella oil on a laboratory scale, and a field trip to the mini plant of Institute Atsiri to learn the distillation process of essential oils on a pilot plant scale. The students and teachers were enthusiastic about participating in the entire series of events. Evaluation of student satisfaction shows that 36%, 48%, and 16% of students respectively, were very satisfied, satisfied, and neutral with this activity. Hopefully, this activity can become a business idea for schools and students.

Abstract

Pondok Pesantren Darul Muttaqin, located in Batu City, East Java, is an Islamic boarding school with a mission to provide non-profit education services. The current number of students is 63, with predictions for an increase in the coming years. This growth in student numbers will impact the increasing demand for drinking water that the boarding school must supply. The current situation shows that the drinking water supply capacity is insufficient for the number of students and staff. Additionally, relying on gallon water providers incurs high costs, traditional methods require significant energy and time, and the quality of the water produced is still inadequate, posing a health risk. Based on an analysis of the partner’s situation and conditions, this community service initiative aims to provide training through technology transfer on drinking water treatment to the students and staff of Pondok Pesantren Darul Muttaqin. The community service activities include delivering materials on drinking water quality, introducing the reverse osmosis system for water treatment, practical sessions on using reverse osmosis equipment, and monitoring. The success of this initiative is measured through partner satisfaction surveys, where 43% of respondents agreed, and 15% strongly agreed with the benefits of the activity.

Abstract

Malang Regency is one of the orange plantation centers in East Java, Indonesia, and has been named Indonesia’s orange agrotourism area. Orange peel waste in Indonesia has not been utilized, even though orange peel contains valuable compounds, such as D-limonene and polyphenols. To date, studies on the extraction of D-limonene and total phenolic compounds (TPC) from Baby Java Pacitan orange (Citrus sinensis L.) and Keprok Batu 55 oranges (Citrus reticulata Blanco) has not been investigated. In this work, several factors affecting the extraction of D-limonene and total phenolic compounds from local Indonesian orange peels with ultrasonic assistance were investigated and optimized. The results showed that drying using a vacuum oven and agitation significantly increased the yield of D-limonene and TPC. The optimum condition for extracting D-limonene was a solid-solvent ratio (SSR) of 1:10 with an ethanol concentration of 96% for 40 minutes. Meanwhile, the optimum condition for extracting polyphenol compounds was a solid-solvent ratio of 1:10 with an ethanol concentration of 96% for 80 minutes. Under optimum conditions, Baby Java Pacitan orange peel produced D-limonene of 130.5 mg/g dry biomass, which was 2.8 times higher than Keprok Batu 55 orange peel. Meanwhile, the TPC for Baby Java Pacitan orange peel and Keprok Batu 55 orange peel were 46.1 mgGAE/g dry biomass and 43.9 mgGAE/g dry biomass, respectively.
