Abstract

The Blitar City General Election Commission (KPU) in the 2019 election succeeded in achieving the target number of public participations of 84% compared to 78% in the 2014 election. The KPU's success in increasing public participation in the 2019 election certainly had a good communication strategy. This research aims to determine the KPU's public communication strategy in increasing participation in the 2019 election in Blitar City. This research uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observation, and documentation. This research uses Lasswell's communication strategy theory, namely selecting and determining communicators, determining target audiences, using techniques for composing messages and choosing media or communication channels. The research results show that the KPU's strategy in determining communicators involves all KPU members and staff, coordinates with relevant stakeholders, and forms ad hoc bodies and Democracy Volunteers. The KPU's strategy in preparing messages is to use language adapted to the target audience, namely local and contemporary languages. The KPU's strategy in choosing media or communication channels uses online, offline, and communication channels. This strategy has succeeded in increasing community participation in accepting political stimuli, individual social characteristics, political systems, political parties, and regional differences so that socialization can be accepted and understood effectively.

Abstract

Music video clips are one of the communication media that can influence their audience. In addition, music video clips are also an alternative entertainment for listeners and viewers. The Walt Disney Company is a film producer that has produced many musical films and has many fans worldwide. In this study, we will analyze the music video clip of the song titled Prince Ali from the film Aladdin, where this film is one of Disney's production films that was remade from the previous version; in addition, this video clip shows a potent blend of western and middle eastern culture using. This research approach uses Roland Barthes' semiotics to see the Middle Eastern culture represented in this music video clip. As is known, many people still believe that the Middle East is identical to deserts and high temperatures, but the illustrations depicted in this video clip are not as perceived. This study uses a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative descriptive interpretative approach, where researchers interpret data to obtain deep and broad meaning and significance to the research results. In the denotative and connotative meanings, the depiction of the Middle East in the music video clip of Prince Ali in the film Aladdin shows the crowd in the Middle of the market passed by Prince Ali's entourage who came with luxury and splendor to propose to Princess Jasmine. The myth that can be analyzed in this study is that in the Middle East, not all women wear the veil and dress all in black, and luxury and wealth cannot always conquer a woman's heart, but honesty and simplicity. The results of the study show how the representation of Middle Eastern culture in the video clip in the film Aladdin through denotative, connotative, and myth analysis reveals a deeper dimension of stereotypes, social views, and more universal values, which ultimately show that women in the Middle East are not only defined by their appearance and that honesty and simplicity have the power to change human views and relationships

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia, as the world’s largest archipelagic country, is characterized by extensive cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity. This plural social context requires inclusive journalistic practices that respect difference and promote intercultural understanding, as reflected in the principles of multicultural journalism. This study aims to examine how multicultural journalism is applied in the television documentary Threads of Indonesia, particularly in the episode Ngangsu Kawruh Sejatining Urip, which portrays the Pransoeh belief community in Muntilan, Magelang. The study employed a qualitative method with an interpretive approach to explore the community’s worldview and lived experiences. Data were collected through field observation, in-depth interviews with key informants, and documentation of community activities and teachings. The findings show that the documentary applies multicultural journalism through inclusive narration, contextual visual representation, the use of diverse sources, and a non-stereotypical portrayal of the Pransoeh community. The interpretive approach enables the documentary to present minority belief narratives in a respectful and meaningful way while conveying values of tolerance, empathy, and mutual respect. This study contributes to journalism and media studies by extending multicultural journalism beyond conventional news reporting into documentary-based audiovisual storytelling, particularly in representing minority belief communities in Indonesia.
