Abstract

This descriptive qualitative analysis explores the understanding shift of Maskumambang Gresik Islamic Boarding School from the Aswaja scripturalist mindset to the scripturalist Salafiyah Wahabiyah mindset and then to the modernist and contextualist Salafiyah mindset. The study aims to understand the reasons behind the shift and the implications on the religious practices of the students and alums. The findings reveal that the religious ideology of the boarding school shifted over time under different leaders, which also influenced the spiritual implications of the students and alums. During the traditionalist Salafiyah era, the spiritual practices were in line with the Aswaja model, while under the Wahabiyah Salafiyah era, patterns shifted to eliminate nuances of T.B.C. (tahayul, bid’ah, churafat). Under the modernist and contextual Salafiyah era, practices evolved to focus on societal benefit and justice. The study highlights the importance of understanding the shifts in religious understanding and its impact on the rules and beliefs of the students and alums of Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

The globalization process has had a significant impact in the spread of popular culture, especially K-Pop culture which influences the behavior of the millennial generation, including primary age students in phase C at SD Muhammadiyah 4 Surabaya. This research aims to investigate the influence of K-Pop culture on students' phubbing behavior and conformity. Through a qualitative approach with case studies, data was obtained from 80 respondents using snowball sampling techniques and questionnaires. The research results show a correlation between exposure to K-Pop culture and phubbing behavior, interpersonal conflict, and self-isolation. Additionally, there is a significant pattern of conformity to K-Pop culture, especially in terms of belief in group righteousness and the desire to be liked by the group. These findings highlight the importance of being aware of the impact of popular culture such as K-Pop on the behavior and social norms of the younger generation, as well as the need for a holistic approach in managing cultural influences in education. Thus, this research contributes to understanding the dynamics of interaction between popular culture and the behavior of the millennial generation.

Abstract

Ahmad Syafii Maarif—affectionately known as Buya Syafii—is one of the Indonesian leading Muslim intellectuals and is a well-known national figure. This article examines Maarif’s Islamic thought and his dialectical-ethical link between Islam, national identity, and humanity. Using an in-depth textual analysis of the primary sources and supported by selected secondary sources, this study attempts to reveal Maarif’s intellectual legacy. This study concludes that Maarif was a Muslim intellectual who developed the model of a religious and democratic state. He bases his main argument that Islam does not need to be placed in a ‘binary opposition’ to the political reality and the national consensus, i.e., Pancasila as the last stated entity evidently accommodates the teachings of the Qur’an. He insisted that the ethical principles of Pancasila, which are in line with Islam, should be absorbed into public life in order to bring forth the right nation and the right state. To him, Islam in Indonesia must thus manifest itself as an ‘ethical entity’ to become the basis for modern Indonesia. He also called Muslims in Indonesia and elsewhere to comprehend the universal moral message of the Qur’an which has a versatile and immutable reach.
