Abstract

The practice of tarawih prayer is inseparable from the influence of local communities' history, culture, and traditions, which creates variations in practice in different regions. There are differences of opinion regarding the number of rak'ahs and the procedure for performing tarawih prayers, especially in Indonesia, where some follow 8 rak'ahs. In comparison, others follow 20 rak'ahs, each with a different basis. This article aims to provide an in-depth understanding of these differences and examines the kitab Kasyfu at-Tabārih fī Bayāni Ṣalat at-Tarāwīh by KH. Abul Faḍol bin Abdus Syakur as-Senūri at-Tūbāni, which thoroughly explores the tarawih prayer. This literature research was conducted using an analytical descriptive approach, examining related texts and documents. The study's findings indicate that the differences in the number of rak'ahs and procedures of the tarawih prayer result from different interpretations of the Prophetic traditions and the practices of the Companions. This research is expected to enrich Islamic insights and reduce the potential for intergroup conflict within Muslims regarding the implementation of tarawih prayers.

Abstract

This research examines the Cimareme Incident in Garut as a resistance to Dutch colonialism in the early 20th century. Through qualitative qualitative historical method, this research traces the socio-economic background of the Cimareme of the Cimareme people who were mostly farmers, as well as the oppressive colonial policies such as the obligation to sell rice, which triggered resistance from the Cimareme people led by Haji Hasan Arif. The people of Cimareme, who were mostly farmers, lived under the pressure of colonial economic policies that forced them to sell their crops at disadvantageous prices. This research was conducted through the stages of data collection or heuristics from literature sources, verification of the validity of sources, interpretation of historical facts, and historiography. The results revealed that the Cimareme Incident was not only a resistance to colonial policies that harmed farmers, but also showed the strong spirit of nationalism among the Garut people. This resistance showed how religious figures, especially Haji Hasan Arif, played an important role in mobilizing the people to uphold justice and fight against colonial exploitation. Although this resistance was followed by the arrest and suppression of Kyai, Peasants, Santri, and Hajis, this event became an important symbol in the struggle for Indonesian independence. The Cimareme Incident strengthened the collective consciousness of the community to unite against colonialism and showed how religion and nationalism became a driving force in the struggle towards independence.

Abstract

This study examines domestic ethics and moral reflections on polygamy in the early twentieth‑century Javanese piwulang manuscript Alakirabi Wayuh Kaliyan Botên (AWKB). Previous research on Javanese household teachings has predominantly emphasized women’s duties and obedience, leaving the moral responsibilities of husbands and the ethical consequences of polygamy largely unaddressed. This study fills that gap by analyzing AWKB as a rare textual source that articulates internal criticism of polygamy within the Javanese intellectual tradition. The research uses a descriptive analytical method based on philological data sourced from the digitized AWKB manuscript written in Javanese script and language. The manuscript was transliterated, paraphrased, and translated, followed by interpretive analysis using Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic framework to contextualize its ethical messages. The findings show three key insights. First, AWKB presents implicit criticism of polygamy by highlighting the husband’s inability to maintain material and emotional justice among wives. Second, the text emphasizes maturity, economic preparedness, and honesty as essential foundations for marital stability. Third, AWKB reframes domestic ethics by shifting moral responsibility from women’s obedience toward the husband’s ethical accountability. These findings contribute to Javanese philological studies by revealing an understudied moral discourse that challenges normative assumptions about gender roles in traditional household teachings. The study concludes that AWKB offers a culturally grounded critique of polygamy and provides a valuable ethical perspective for contemporary discussions on marital justice and family well‑being.

Abstract

This study explores the historiographic methods of two important figures in the tradition of writing classical Islamic history, namely al-Thabari and al-Mas'udi. This study aims to compare their methodological approaches in reconstructing history. Al-Thabari wrote Tarikh al-Umam wa al-Muluk using the method of history and chronological approach (hawliyat), paying great attention to the sanad and listing the narrators systematically. In contrast, al-Mas'udi in Muruj al-Dzahab wa Ma'adin al-Jauhar used the thematic method (al-tashnif al-maudhu'i) and geographical approach and emphasized narration and direct observation from the results of rihlah to various regions. Nevertheless, both of them made a major contribution to the development of Islamic historiography by presenting interpretations and historical narratives that were not only chronological but also reflective of the socio-cultural realities of their times. This study uses a qualitative and historical approach to explore primary and secondary sources related to their historiographical methods. The results show that the differences in their methods reflect the diversity of approaches in writing classical Islamic history.
