Abstract

Pembangunan dan pengembangan wilayah Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) di Kalimantan Timur sebagai program prioritas pemerintah akan berdampak kepada peningkatan lalu lintas kapal di Selat Makassar yang juga akan meningkatkan kemungkinan terjadinya tubrukan kapal. Penelitian ini akan menganalisis risiko terjadinya tubrukan kapal sebagai dampak dari kepadatan lalu lintas kapal pada wilayah perairan IKN khususnya di wilayah antara Balikpapan dan Samarinda. Proses analisis menggunakan pendekatan simulasi data Automatic Identification System (AIS) dan menerapkan nilai risiko berdasarkan situasi kapal dengan kapal (encounter situation) dengan Potential Assessment of Risk (PARK) Model. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kapal akan bergerak pada area dengan kepadatan yang tinggi sehingga interaksi kapal dengan kapal lainnya yang saling berdekatan tidak dapat dihindari. Keterbatasan ruang olah gerak kapal pada situasi ini diinterpretasikan pada kategori 5 atau “sedikit berbahaya”. Rekomendasi untuk menurunkan risiko terjadinya tubrukan kapal dapat diawali dengan membenahi human error melalui peningkatan kompetensi dan awareness kru kapal terkait navigasi dan potensi bahaya tubrukan, serta dilanjutkan dengan peningkatan pengawasan, pembenahan infrastruktur dan zonasi perairan.

Abstract

Effective English communication is vital in the global maritime industry. Maritime English, a branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), addresses the needs of maritime professionals. Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) uses real-life scenarios, making it ideal for vocational training. This means practicing real shipboard situations for maritime cadets, leading to effective learning. This study investigates the effectiveness of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) on cadets’ speaking skills when learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructional materials. The study applied a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent group design, involving 48 cadets from the deck study program at the Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Makassar, Indonesia. The results indicate a significant improvement in the pretest-posttest scores, analyzed using a statistical test with the prerequisite data being normally distributed. The hypothesis test results, with a significance value of 0.000, confirm that there were differences in the speaking skills of the cadets at the Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Makassar after applying the CTL model in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructional materials. The findings highlight that the CTL model positively impacts and optimally influences the teaching and learning process in speaking skills when cadets learn ESP materials. This approach increases cadets' confidence and encourages them to be active learners based on their real experiences.

Abstract

The Sultan Hasanuddin Training Ship of PIP Makassar was selected as the research object for this study. The study aims to analyze the stability of the ship by focusing on calculating the metacentric height (GM) value based on the moment of static stability, incorporating both manual methods and computer applications that generate GM values as indicators of seaworthiness according to the Intact Stability Code. The research method used in this study is a case study that involves descriptive, numerical, and comparative analysis of various ship parameters, including the length, width, and inside the ship, as well as other measurements required in the stability calculation. The GM calculation is carried out using the static stability moment approach and compared with the results of recording the ship's rolling period. The results show that the GM value generated from the calculation of the existing static stability moments, if deducted from the total value of the Virtual Loss of GM due to the inertia moment in the slack tanks, will produce an effective GM worth that is used as the basis for the ship stability benchmark. This research could contribute significantly to improving safety protocols and design standards in maritime operations. The benefits of this research include providing theoretical information for lecturers and cadets of PIP and commercial shipping officers, enriching teaching materials on ship construction and stability, and promoting a safety culture by offering practical information to estimate ship stability conditions before more detailed calculations are made.
