Abstract

This phenomenological study investigated the way three authentic Indonesian Muslims who live in Bandung and Jakarta gave meaning to the word freedom. Three informants were purposively selected to participate in the study: a 34-year-old Muslim businesswoman; married; and lives in Jakarta; a Muslim man, 36 years old, single, a lawyer who lives in Bandung; and a 21-year-old single man who is a sophomore at a private university in Bandung. In-depth interview was administered to obtain detailed and more comprehensive information about the participants’ thoughts and experiences.  IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) and Domain Analyses were utilized to analyze the data gathered. The study found that birth order, parenting styles, exposure to collectivist or individualistic value systems as well as Western concept of freedom, repentance or “Tawbah”, and increased knowledge about Islam were strongly related to their meaning construction of the word freedom.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of toxic femininity and unhealthy competition among professional Muslim women in the workplace, focusing on its manifestations, underlying factors, psychological impacts, and coping strategies. Using a phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with four Muslim female informants and analyzed with NVivo software. The findings reveal that toxic femininity manifests in symbolic sabotage, gossip, social exclusion, hierarchical dominance, and the misuse of religious symbols. Contributing factors include professional insecurity, patriarchal culture, and the absence of fair and inclusive organizational policies. The impacts experienced by the informants include chronic stress, psychosomatic symptoms, declining motivation, and social isolation. Coping strategies tend to be personal and spiritual, such as prayer, dhikr, and informal support from family or alumni networks, while collective approaches often fail due to a lack of structural support. This study proposes an integrative 3P model—Psychology, Communication, and Islamic Ethics—as an intervention framework, encompassing the development of psychological safety, ethical communication training, and Islamic leadership grounded in maqashid al-shariah. This model offers a transformative strategy to foster a workplace culture that is just, collaborative, and aligned with Islamic values. Keywords: toxic femininity, queen bee syndrome, organizational psychology, Islamic ethics, gender communication

Abstract

Happiness has long been a central theme in psychology, both in conceptual discourse and in the development of measurement instruments. However, no existing scale integrates the moral and spiritual dimensions of happiness derived from the Qur’an and Hadith within a robust psychometric framework ensuring measurement invariance. The Qur’an and Hadith, as universal sources of guidance, encompass principles of psychological and spiritual well-being that transcend religious and cultural boundaries, consistent with the Islamic concept of rahmatan lil ‘alamin (mercy to all creation). This study aimed to develop a Qur’an- and Hadith-based happiness measurement scale using the Rasch model. The scale construction was grounded in prior qualitative research that identified three core Islamic constructs of happiness: patience (sabr), self-control (mujāhadah al-nafs), and gratitude (shukr). A total of 450 participants from diverse religious backgrounds in Indonesia completed the instrument. Data were analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and the Rasch Model to evaluate validity, reliability, and item fit. The results indicated that the three-factor model exhibited excellent fit indices (CFI = 0.926, TLI = 0.910, RMSEA = 0.068) with high composite reliability (ω = 0.893). Rasch analysis further showed Infit MNSQ values ranging from 0.78 to 1.40 and item separation indices above 3, suggesting strong discriminant power and internal consistency. Overall, the findings demonstrate that happiness in Islam can be operationalized through measurable constructs rooted in patience, self-control, and gratitude. The proposed scale offers a psychometrically sound and universally applicable instrument grounded in Islamic ethical principles, contributing to cross-cultural research on psychological well-being.
