Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a long-term medical illness marked by high blood sugar levels caused by the body's ineffective use of insulin. The increasing frequency of this problem in not just adults but also in children and adolescents is causing alarm. An overview of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus detection, diagnosis, treatment, and risk factors is intended to be provided by this review of the literature. The review's research sources come from a number of respected scientific periodicals. The information included in this literature review comes from a variety of scientific papers that have been published in the recent five to ten years in both domestic and foreign journals. Using the following keywords, a comprehensive search of several databases, including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, produced these articles: "type 2 diabetes mellitus," "children," "adolescents," "epidemiology," and "risk." The findings indicate that Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is becoming more common in children and teenagers, particularly in developing nations. Unhealthy lifestyle choices such an unbalanced diet and inactivity are associated with this trend (Rahmayunita et al., 2023). Significant concern also surrounds the long-term consequences of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in children and adolescents, which include retinopathy, nephropathy, cardiovascular disease, and neuropathy (Rahmayunita et al., 2023; Wijayanti et al., 2020; Kusumastuti et al., 2023; Andriyani et al., 2022).Medical teams, parents, and the patients themselves must work together to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in children and adolescents. For this condition to be prevented and controlled from progressing, early detection, suitable treatment, and lifestyle modifications toward healthy habits are essential.

Abstract

Depression is a serious mental health issue worldwide, a condition that can significantly affect a person's quality of life. Aromatherapy has emerged as a complementary therapy with the potential to alleviate symptoms of depression, offering a lower risk of side effects compared to conventional pharmacological treatments. This narrative review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of aromatherapy in reducing symptoms of depression, with a focus on the mechanisms of action of essential oils used in this therapy. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases from the year 2000 to 2023. Included articles consisted of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Essential oils such as lavender, bergamot, lemon, rose, and patchouli have been shown to be effective in reducing depressive symptoms. Their effectiveness is associated with increased levels of serotonin and dopamine, as well as suppression of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis activity. Methods of administration, such as inhalation, massage, and diffuser use, produce varying outcomes depending on the characteristics of the studied population. Conclusion: Aromatherapy has potential as an effective complementary therapy for depression. Further research is needed to strengthen the evidence of its effectiveness across diverse populations and intervention durations.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease whose prevalence continues to increase every year. According to predictions from the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of diabetes sufferers in Indonesia will increase from 8.4 million in 2000 to around 21.3 million in 2030 (Widiastuti et al., 2022). Uncontrolled diabetes can cause various serious complications, such as heart disease, kidney damage, blindness, and amputation. Therefore, effective management of diabetes mellitus is very important to prevent worse health impacts. One alternative approach that is increasingly popular is the use of herbal plants, which have been shown to have the potential to lower blood glucose levels and help manage diabetes. This study aims to summarize herbal plants that have been scientifically proven to have an effect on controlling blood glucose levels in people with diabetes mellitus. The results of this literature review are expected to provide new insights for researchers and medical practitioners in developing more natural and affordable diabetes treatments.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effectiveness of Zingiber purpureum extract in lowering blood glucose levels in obese Rattus norvegicus mice. Twenty mice were divided into five groups (n=4): negative control, positive control, comparison, treatment 1 (P-1; 100 mg/kgBW), and treatment 2 (P-2; 200 mg/kgBW). The treatment was given for 4 weeks. Blood glucose levels were measured before and after treatment. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences between groups (p=0.005), with the greatest decrease in blood glucose in P-2 (mean Δ=32.25 mg/dL). These results indicate the potential of Zingiber purpureum as an adjuvant therapy to lower blood glucose in obesity.

Abstract

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease that poses major challenges in its diagnosis and management. Modern asthma therapy has limitations, especially the side effects of synthetic drugs. Therefore, the use of herbal plants as an additional therapy is a potential alternative. This article is a literature review using the systematic review method with the PRISMA diagram. The literature was searched through the Google Scholar and PubMed databases using the keywords "herbal plants", "therapy", and "asthma" for publications in 2014–2024. Articles were selected based on relevant inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 15 selected journals discuss various herbal plants that have anti-asthma potential, including black cumin (Nigella sativa), ground cherry (Physalis angulata L.), betel leaf (Piper betle L.), sembung leaf (Blumea balsamifera L.), cubeb fruit (Piper cubeba L.), sedge rhizome (Cyperus rotundus L.), patikan kebo herb (Euphorbia hirta L.), and widuri leaf (Calotropis gigantea). The mechanism of action of these plants involves anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory activity, as well as reducing inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and IgE. Herbal plants have significant potential as additional therapy for asthma through anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory mechanisms. Further research in the form of clinical trials is still needed.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the biggest cause of death globally and continue to increase. One of the efforts to overcome NCDs in Indonesia is early detection of NCD risk factors in the community, one of which is through health promotion programs. Basic Health Research Data (RISKESDAS) for 2020 shows that the prevalence of stroke in Indonesia in the population aged >15 years is 10.8% or an estimated 2,120,326 people. The prevalence of stroke in West Sumatra is 12.2% (2,553,200 people). Preventive efforts to reduce the number of stroke sufferers are an effective and efficient way. The aim of assessing the level of stroke risk in each resident in the Surau Zam Zam Pagambiran area is predominantly elderly, so it is necessary to prevent strokes in order to minimize the number of strokes in the community environment. Therefore, early prevention will be more effective if each individual knows the risk factors for stroke. One way to prevent early stroke is by using the ERDANELA model stroke prevention service which is able to identify the level of stroke risk. Extension through direct lectures by instructors from the community service team; the media used are power point and questionnaires; The counseling participants consisted of congregants at the Zam-Zam surau, all of whom were elderly (aged 60 years and over) totaling 21 people. Before the counseling, data was filled in and health checks were carried out for each congregation at the Zam-Zam surau (height, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels). Of the 21 elderly congregation participants at Pagambiran surau zam-zam in Padang City who took part in counseling on early prevention of stroke risk factors using the Erdanela model troke prevention service, it was found that the congregation participants were very enthusiastic about participating in all series of event activities, with many questions being asked to the material giving committee, and the participants of the Zam-Zam surau congregation understood the material provided and were able to answer all the questions on stroke risk factors given during the question and answer session correctly. Health promotion to the elderly regarding the prevention of non-communicable diseases and early detection at Surau Zam-Zam Pagambiran aims to increase the knowledge of the Surau Zam-Zam Pagambiran congregation regarding the importance of knowing what risk factors can increase the occurrence of stroke through non-communicable diseases. The results of this activity are expected to be able to understand and independently play an active role in implementing healthy living habits by avoiding risk factors for stroke through non-communicable diseases.
