Abstract

In contemporary times, rationalism has emerged as the fundamental principle of thinking, leading to the neglect of spiritual matters by society. The portrayal of this concept can be observed in the Chinese animated film called Little Door Gods (2016), helmed by director Gary Wang. This study seeks to examine how the animated film "Little Door gods" portrays spirituality in contemporary society. This study use the Boggs and Petrie film theory (2017) to examine the progression and context of the film narrative, which serves as the research data. Barthes's semiotic theory, introduced in 1972, is also employed to analyse the symbols found in films. This study observes that the film utilises Chinese culture or Chinese mythology as a foundation for its narrative. There exists a correlation between the realm of humans and the realm of deities, which demonstrates that human spirituality has an impact on the divine realm. Additionally, this relationship portrays the gradual decline of spirituality in contemporary society. Mythology, in its origins, encompassed both a cultural framework and a system of beliefs. In the contemporary age, it also served as a means to harmonise significant occasions. The video also makes an effort to familiarise children with Chinese mythology.

Abstract

In carrying out research, the role of reference sources, previous research, and research novelty are fundamental and cannot be separated. However, problems arise when in writing, these three elements cannot be described optimally so that the flow of the research problem, research urgency, reference sources and methods used cannot be formulated optimally. Therefore, this article will explain the definitions and concepts of key references, state of the art, and novelty. This study will use the literature review method by analyzing various types of literature sources that are relevant to the topic of discussion. The results of the study show that key references mean the main reference sources used by researchers (key books). State of the Art means the process of identifying previous research to look for gaps. Lastly, research novelty means that a researcher must be able to make research findings or novelty.

Abstract

In the era of globalized tourism, destinations function not only as geographic spaces but as communicative platforms for cultural exchange. This study examines how place branding elements—brand image, cultural authenticity, and community engagement—influence revisit intention through the mediating roles of perceived cultural exchange and destination identity alignment. Drawing on theories of intercultural communication and symbolic interactionism, a structural equation modelling approach using PLS-SEM was applied to data collected from 235 tourists visiting culturally significant destinations in Indonesia. The results reveal that perceived cultural exchange is the strongest predictor of revisit intention, while cultural authenticity and brand image significantly shape identity alignment and intercultural engagement. Community involvement was also found to impact perceived cultural exchange positively. The findings offer theoretical contributions by reconceptualizing place branding as a dialogic and identity-forming process and practical implications for designing culturally responsive branding strategies rooted in local narratives and community participation.

Abstract

Said stated that Orientalism is the domination of the West over the East. Orientalism emerged after many trips made by European countries, causing the Orient or East to be exploited by the West. One form of exploitation is present in the film industry, as presented by the animation Isle of Dogs (2018) by Wes Anderson. This research uses Boggs and Petrie's (2018) cinematography theory to look at the symbols presented through places and characters in the film. Stuart Hall's representation theory (1997) is used to interpret symbols which are representations of Japanese culture. This research shows dichotomies used in the film, such as Japanese and English language, humans, and animals (dogs), modernity and traditional, active American students and passive Japanese students as symbol or representation of West and East which is an element of orientalism. The result of this research shows that this film has an attempt to destroy the idea of orientalism, but the representation of Japan presented in this film confirms the idea of orientalism itself. Hence, it can be said that this film failed to deconstruct the orientalism.
