Abstract

English movies present an engrossing and immersive experience for language learners, making them an appealing medium for expanding vocabulary. This study investigates learners’ viewing habits and preferences for English movies, as well as the perceived influence of these mediums on vocabulary acquisition, efficient viewing techniques, and extra advantages beyond vocabulary building. A questionnaire that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques is used in a descriptive survey approach. Descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation, theme analysis, and content analysis are all used in the data analysis process to give a thorough picture of how English movies aid in vocabulary acquisition for EFL learners. The results indicate that most learners regularly watch English movies, with action movies being the most popular genre. Most participants watch English movies for an hour on average, and all respondents concur that viewing movies helps people learn new words. Most learners prefer to watch movies with subtitles because they help with vocabulary development and understanding. The results also emphasize the wider advantages of seeing English movies, such as increased motivation, better English proficiency in speaking, listening, and pronunciation, and a deeper comprehension of cultural nuances and English use in everyday situations. This current study recommends the need for greater investigation into the wider effects of English movies on English proficiency and pedagogical strategies to maximize their application in English learning-teaching environments.

Abstract

Based on Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory, the "id, ego and superego" perspective, this research aims to explain the value of moral education in the ST story "My Wife by Ethics". Statements or quotations from texts that contain moral educational value are the data sources for this research. This study is qualitative in nature. The 4-page short story entitled My Ethics Work, ST, which was first published by the Student Press Institute PENDAPA Tamansiswa, is the data source for this research. Reading and note-taking methods were used to collect research data. Next, data analysis is carried out by reducing, presenting and drawing conclusions. The research results show that in the short story Istriku, the perspectives of the id, ego and superego are very important for moral education. In Totok's impulsiveness to borrow money and his threat to Ajik, the id perspective is reflected. Ego is shown when Totok cannot balance his needs with moral reality, such as in killing his wife. The superego is reflected in Totok's regret and Ajik's actions, which show awareness of social and moral norms. This research increases our understanding of the value of moral education in the short story Istriku, as well as its contribution to psychoanalysis and literary studies.

Abstract

The presence of a technology-based speech learning application namely English Language Speech Application (ELSA), an artificial intelligence (AI) may promote EFL students' speaking performance because of its great features. This research attempts to examine EFL students' speaking performance by using the ELSA speak application, further explore their perceptions of using it, and find out the inhibiting factors influencing low performance in their speaking. A mixed-method research design was applied to obtain both quantitative and qualitative data. 21 EFL students (5 Males and 16 Females) from Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta were involved in the data gathering process which was collected by using a test, questionnaire, and semi-structured interview. Furthermore, pre-test and post-test were conducted to examine their speaking ability, and a questionnaire using a 4-point Likert scale. In addition, a semi-structured interview was conducted to further explore the inhibiting factors of their low speaking performance. The findings revealed that students' speaking ability has significantly improved after using the ELSA application. It can be known the mean score of pre-test results was 75, meanwhile, the post-test score was 88. There was a 17% improvement after using the ELSA application. Furthermore, of 20 respondents, 18 (90%) of respondents feel confident in speaking English by using the ELSA Speak application. Only 2 (10%) of the respondents disagree and none strongly disagree about the statement. Of 20 respondents, 16 or 80% of respondents have positive perceptions that using ELSA may increase their speaking performance. Moreover, of 20 respondents, 19 or 95% of respondents perceived ELSA to be a great speech application that could boost their motivation to improve their speaking performance. 18 or 90% of respondents perceived that this application has a good quality learning design. Meanwhile, internal and external factors were identified as the inhibiting factors influencing their low speaking performance.Â
