Abstract

The song Loneliness went viral after America's Got Talent gave it a Golden Buzzer for the performance of the song's owner, Putri Ariani. Behind the popularity of this song, there is a sad story that Putri experienced, such as being underestimated because of her physical limitations. In this case, a song lyric can have value and be able to attract attention if the choice of words is correct. As the function of lyrics and songs is to speak universally, they can express the contents of the creator's heart, and reflect the culture of various existing cultural diversity. Therefore, examining song lyrics can provide an academic narrative of the meaning contained therein. This research aims to explain the technique of translating English into Indonesian for the song Loneliness by Putri Arian. Using a theoretical approach to translation techniques from Newmark (1988) and Larson (1984), the song Loneliness was analyzed qualitative-descriptive. The results of research on the lyrics of the song Loneliness by Putri Ariani are the meaning of the song using adaptation techniques, semantic translation and the concept of lexical items.

Abstract

The controversy surrounding the casting of Halle Bailey, a black actress, as Ariel in the live-action adaptation of "The Little Mermaid" has sparked discussions about racism and representation in the media. Some people have rejected the idea of a black actress playing the role of a character who was initially depicted as white. The controversy highlights the ongoing struggle for representation and diversity in the entertainment industry. This research aims to see how people respond to the film The Little Mermaid in real life with a black main character. The Little Mermaid, a Disney classic, has been controversial due to the casting of a Black actress, Halle Bailey, as Ariel in the upcoming live-action remake. Some people have refused to accept a Black actress like Ariel, which illustrates how a white-centric perspective requires a more profound understanding. The backlash against the movie has led to abysmal box office numbers in China and South Korea, showing the global reach of anti-Blackness. However, the importance of representation in media has been highlighted, and casting a Black actress as Ariel is seen as a positive step towards diversity and acceptance. The negative attention on The Little Mermaid has fueled a groundswell of support from other fans who view such anger as founded in racism.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the translation process by Emma Heesters in rending Anneth Delliecia’s song lyrics “Mungkin hari ini hari esok atau nanti”. The translation method in question places a strong emphasis on the source or target languages. Additionally, the author sought to ascertain the rationale behind the utilization of this specific translation methodology. This research method used descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach in other words this is to describe the data that has been obtained and also a case as a design. The lyrics of the song entitled mungkin hari ini esok atau nanti by Emma Heesters, are the subject of this analysis. The author gathers data through the process of documentation. This involves collecting the lyrics of the Indonesian and English versions of the song and listening to the song. The translation method employed in this instance is based on the V diagram theory, which was first proposed by Newmark. The results indicated that the predominant translation method employed was one that placed significant emphasis on the target language, with some portions of the lyrics also emphasizing the source language. It can be posited that Emma Heesters’ tendency to utilize a translation method that prioritised the target language was driven by the necessity to align the translation with the desired intonation or tone of the song.

Abstract

“Cigarette Girl” is an Indonesian television series that showcases many Javanese cultures. This series has been aired globally on a popular streaming platform, Netflix. As depicting various cultural aspects, this series has a clear and concise subtitle translation in English to make the story plot understandable for foreign audiences. Therefore, translation techniques were potentially used to create a good subtitle for the series. In this case, this research aimed to identify the cultural aspects portrayed in the series and the techniques used to translate them. It involved a qualitative approach to produce a comprehensive analysis discussion. Based on the analysis conducted, the presence of various Javanese cultural terms contained in the series was revealed, including mas, rama, ibu, bapak, jeng, mbak/mbak ayu/mbakyu, yu, ndhuk, nyi, cah ayu, kretek, srintil, tingwe, saus, pelinting, sendika, dong, nginthil, monggo, toh, mawon, macak, manak, gusti paringana aku, and dalang. Seven translation techniques were also found to be used to translate those cultural terms. They were adaptation, calque, generalisation, reduction, borrowing, description, and addition.

Abstract

This article tries to explore some of the implication of Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of personal dimension and collective dimension as represented by the characters in Fate: The Winx saga. This film is produced by Netflix and released on 22 January 2021. In this research, film is assumed as media to validate Jung’s theory about human psyche. This research is a qualitative descriptive. The data were processed by analyzing, categorizing, and interpreting the visual codes provided by the film. Therefore, the meaning can be theoretically drawn. The result of this study shows that the personal and collective dimensions offered by Jung are owned by the characters in the film. The personal dimension manifests in the Ego in the form of emotions and memories of the past. This personal dimension is represented through the characters such as Bloom, Musa, and Terra. While the collective dimension can be explained through the persona, shadow, anima and animus shared by all the characters in the film.

Abstract

Taboo language within the Malay Bangka community acts as a social boundary that regulates behaviors, preventing discomfort or negative outcomes. This study explores the underlying codes and principles behind the use of taboo language in this community, using Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory (1995) to discuss Cognitive and Communicative Principles. The primary data comes from the Bangka Malay community across Bangka and South Bangka Regencies, while secondary sources include various literary works. Data were gathered through listening (simak), interviews (cakap), and document analysis, and were examined using six steps of qualitative analysis. Triangulation was applied to ensure validity, with discussions involving traditional Malay culture experts (Lembaga Adat Melayu). The results of the study suggest that, based on the Cognitive and Communicative Principles, speakers use ostensive stimuli (i.e. particular signals or cues that are deliberately used to indicate that someone is trying to convey information), such as coded phrases like "nanti bengkak kemaluan" (your genital may swell), to guide listeners toward the intended message, ensuring optimal relevance. Additionally, urban myths, often attributed to supernatural forces like ghosts, are employed to reinforce the consequences of disobedience. From the lens of Relevance Theory, these phrases are effective, as they require minimal cognitive effort for listeners to understand and process the speaker’s message.

Abstract

Barbie Movie has become a popular culture icon in the United States and worldwide. Barbie's live-action movie portrays Margot Robbie as a Barbie stereotype who is beloved, beautiful, and ideal. However, behind the glamour of Barbie's beautiful and perfect world, there is a deep-seated construct of American beauty standards, especially for girls and women's unrealistic expectations. This research examines the theoretical framework proposed by Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty Myth theory to explore how the Barbie film promotes and reinforces existing beauty standards in America. This study tried to analyze the Barbie film, identifying how Barbie's character constructs ideal beauty attributes so that the movie plays a role in influencing society's perspective on beauty standards, creating feelings of inferiority through the characters. This study provides a deeper understanding of how mass media and popular culture can influence perceptions of beauty by using qualitative methods to describe the data and Post-National American Studies as an approach to delve how movie is produced as a representation of American society. In addition, this study found that Barbie movie represents the beauty myth, such as physical perfection, eating disorders, and agelessness. At the same time, the narrative of the movie reflects a social critique of empowerment and stereotypes significantly for woman. Moreover, this film emphasizes that being a woman must meet various criteria, especially the typical white American woman as the world's standard of beauty.

Menerjemahkan idiom ke dalam bahasa lain dapat menjadi rumit dan menantang karena idiom tidak dapat diterjemahkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji idiom dalam bahasa Inggris dan penerjemahannya ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah idiom dari film “Spellbound”. Peneliti menggunakan metode analisis dokumen kualitatif (Morgan, 2022). Peneliti menemukan 22 idiom dalam film Spellbound. Penelitian ini menghasilkan idiom yang diterjemahkan menjadi idiom sebesar 2.72%, sedangkan yang diterjemahkan menjadi non-idiom sebesar 77.3%. Penelitian ini juga menemukan tiga strategi penerjemahan dari 8 yang digunakan untuk menerjemahkan idiom. Hasilnya adalah: penerjemahan dengan kata-kata yang lebih umum 45.5%, kata-kata netral/kurang ekspresif 31.8%, dan penerjemahan dengan parafrase 22.7%.Kata kunci: strategi penerjemahan; ekspresi idiomatik; penerjemahan idiom; film Spellbound.AbstractIdioms are fixed groups of words that have a specific meaning. Translating idioms into other languages can be complicated and challenging because idioms cannot be translated. This study aims to examine idioms in English and their translation into Indonesian. The data used in this study are idioms from the movie “Spellbound.” The researcher used a qualitative document analysis method (Morgan, 2022). The researcher found 22 idioms in the Spellbound movie. This study resulted in idioms translated into idioms of 22.7%, while those translated into non-idioms were 77.3%. This study also found three translation strategies from 8 used to translate idioms. The results are: translation with more common words 45.5%, neutral/less expressive words 31.8%, and translation with paraphrases 22.7%.

Abstract

There are two types of languages currently used by humans, namely written language and spoken language. These two languages are used separately for different purposes. But in its development, written language and spoken language are used simultaneously so that now the term discussing chatting. This paper attempts to examine the development of these types of languages both from structuralist and functionalist point of view. The two major schools eventually brought this study to the point of problems regarding language, namely discourse. Discourse studies are able to examine languages ranging from words, phrases, clauses, and sentences comprehensively both first order meaning and second order meaning. The result of the study shows that the discourse on Facebook is a different discourse from other forms of discourse. The difference lies in its media, the shape of the text, and the nature of the text. The media is a forum that can be found in cyberspace through computer devices and internet networks. The form of text is in the form of a written conversation between two people or even more. In these conversations between the speaker and the partner do not deal directly but can directly comment, refute, criticize, or approve the opinions of the speaker. The grammatical elements of internet languages are very different which are shown through the structure of the sentence, the presentation of words, and inflection of words. Abstract

Gender is a complex issue because it is a social identity that is dynamic in nature. It exists according to the culture to which a society belongs and is not fixed. Films, as a popular medium, often convey messages about gender issues and are implicit in their nature. This research explores the construction of gender in Original Netflix's Purple Heart. This research is qualitative descriptive research with the semiotic approach of Rolland Barthes. The result of the study showed that the film shows how gender is constructed through the intense relationship between men and women. Furthermore, the film Purple Hearts constructs gender identity unequally, in particular regarding the roles of men and women and the treatment of women.
