Abstract

Reflections of the Times in the Short Story "Doa Sebelum Tsunami" by Fazil AbdullahThis study aims to describe the reflection of the times contained in the short story "Doa Sebelum Tsunami" by Fazil Abdullah. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. Data in the form of sentences, dialogues, and social facts were collected from the short story text through a semiotic reading method with note-taking techniques. Data analysis was carried out by applying Alan Swingewood's sociology of literature theory, especially the concept of literature as a reflection or mirror of the times, to reveal the relationship between literary texts and the socio-historical realities that underlie them. The results of the analysis show that the short story "Doa Sebelum Tsunami" effectively reflects the reality of Acehnese society in four crucial periods, namely: 1) the pre-DOM period, 2) the post-DOM period; 3) the pre-tsunami period, and 4) the post-tsunami period. This research has several implications: 1) it strengthens the role of literature, especially short stories, as a rich source of historical and social studies, while demonstrating the relevance of Swingewood's sociological theory of literature to analyze the Indonesian context, 2) it emphasizes the importance of literature in archiving collective memory, especially for traumatic events that may be less documented in official narratives. This short story becomes a medium for preserving history from the perspective of victims and ordinary people, 3) the research findings can contribute to a more empathetic understanding of the complexity of the Aceh conflict and the long process of post-disaster recovery, which is important for peace education and national reconciliation.
