Abstract

Purpose This research aimed at finding out the learning styles of Year 11 students of a private school in Makassar. The research particularly aims to explore students’ perception of Blended English Learning (BEL) and strategies in accommodating students’ learning styles. Methodology This research employed the explanatory sequential mixed-method design with quantitative and qualitative data. The participants consisted of 19 students and an English teacher. Data collection used some instruments, namely observation sheets, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. Results/Findings The results showed that the Year 11 students were dominated by auditory learning style with a minor preference category which means that the students used this learning style, but usually as a second choice or in conjunction with other learning styles. Next, the interview results revealed students’ views on the BEL differ according to their learning styles and most of them preferred face-to-face learning. Then, the findings on the teacher's observation and interviews showed that the teacher used differentiated strategy and thematic webbing. So, it helps him to implement different strategies for each student. Implications The results suggest that learning styles are the significant elements in the learning which help students achieve their learning goals. On this basis, this research will convey valuable information for future research that will explore the students' learning styles in a private school.

Abstract

This study aims to address problems encountered during EFL instruction by teachers and students. The problem identified in this study is the difficulty in learning English through a focused approach. The purpose of this study is to analyze the content of stand-up comedians' lessons in English and to determine whether these lessons can be applied to the routine of learning English for EFL students who view English as a part of their religion. The study will be conducted in a qualitative descriptive format, using observation and categorization methods to collect data from TikTok, a smartphone application that is well-known among students. This study will collect 50 videos from two TikTok accounts, one from Indonesian stand-up comedy and the other from English stand-up. The collected data will then be subjected to comparative analysis in order to determine the similarities and differences between comedians of the English language and English. The study's findings are significant in terms of using quality control techniques and teasing jokes to extract humor in both languages.

Abstract

The Merdeka Belajar curriculum emphasizes inclusion and diversity, but there is still a lack of adequate teaching materials that represent various aspects of local culture. Although the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum has provided freedom and flexibility, its implementation still faces several challenges that need to be overcome. One of the main challenges in implementing the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum is the lack of resources. This study aims to analyze the integration of local cultural arts in the context of teaching materials in the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum. This type of research is qualitative. The data collection method uses literature study, observation, interviews, FGDs, and document analysis. The data collection instrument used a questionnaire sheet. The participants in this study were teachers and local governments. The data analysis technique used qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the utilization of local cultural arts in teaching materials can strengthen local cultural identity and provide significant and relevant learning experiences for students. Therefore, the Regional Cultural Mindset (PPKD) can be an important guideline in developing teaching materials that are in accordance with regional characteristics and needs and meet the competency standards expected in the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the constraints that hinder the realization of critical thinking in students’ oral argumentation in higher education contexts. The study employed an interpretive qualitative case study design. The participants were four purposively selected lecturers who teach speaking courses emphasizing argumentative discussion at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bone. They had at least one semester of experience facilitating academic speaking activities and were selected through maximum variation sampling to capture diverse instructional perspectives. Data were collected through classroom observations, audio recordings of academic speaking activities, and interviews with lecturers. Thematic analysis was conducted iteratively to identify recurring linguistic, affective, and pedagogical constraints. The findings indicate that students’ oral argumentation is largely dominated by descriptive claims, with limited use of evidence, warrants, and rebuttals, revealing a gap between students’ critical thinking potential and their oral performance. This gap is affected by related language issues, like having a small vocabulary and not speaking smoothly; emotional factors, such as anxiety and fear of being judged; and teaching conditions, like not having enough training in argumentation and support for academic reading and writing. The study concludes that critical thinking in oral argumentation should be understood as a context-dependent and discursive practice rather than merely an individual cognitive ability. So, the research highlights the importance of teaching methods that combine language skills, emotional support, and clear training in argumentation to help improve critical thinking through speaking in higher education.
