Abstract

This study investigates the pronunciation challenges Indonesian EFL learners face with English consonant fricatives. The research aimed to identify common pronunciation errors, explore underlying causes, and propose strategies for improvement. Using an explanatory sequential design, 30 undergraduate students completed a pronunciation test focusing on fricatives, followed by interviews with 10 students who made the most errors. The analysis revealed frequent mispronunciations of fricatives such as /ʒ/, /v/, and /θ/, often substituted with native sounds like /s/, /z/, and /t/. Voiced fricatives posed greater difficulties than voiceless ones, especially in contexts where Indonesian has no phonetic equivalent. Interviews highlighted a lack of familiarity with these sounds and insufficient pronunciation training as primary challenges. Native language interference and limited exposure to correct English pronunciation were significant factors in these difficulties. The findings call for more targeted instruction in English fricatives within the Indonesian EFL context. Further research with larger sample sizes and longitudinal approaches is recommended to explore long-term outcomes.

Abstract

Folklores are frequently used as teaching media at schools. However, they are suspected to contain gender stereotypes. This study aims to examine the gender representation and gender stereotypes in 28 folklores from Central Kalimantan published in two books by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in 1982 and 1995. Gender representation is explored through the roles and occurrence of the characters in the folklores, while four categories of gender stereotypes (personality traits, domestic behaviors, occupations, and physical appearances) are used to investigate the gender stereotypes attached to the male and female characters in the stories. The results show there is an imbalanced representation of male and female characters in Central Kalimantan folklores; from the total of 106 characters, male representation has almost twice in occurrence (60.4%) compared to the female one (39.6%). Mostly, males are the main characters in the stories having both positive or negative roles, and the females have only inferior roles. The gender stereotypes of patriarchy are found to be promoted through the characters’ description in the folklores. Therefore, to represent the proper concept of gender equality through stories, a critical view is needed in selecting folklores as teaching media at schools.

Abstract

This research investigates how various contextual factors influence the accuracy of English pronunciation among Indonesian EFL learners. Motivation, exposure to the second language (L2), formal education, and interference from the first language (L1) are explored to address a gap in understanding their combined impact. Employing an explanatory sequential approach, the research gathers quantitative data through questionnaires and pronunciation tests administered to 30 EFL learners, selected using cluster sampling from a total of 80 students across three classes. Qualitative insights were then obtained from five randomly chosen participants in follow-up interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics, while the qualitative data were examined through deductive thematic analysis. The findings reveal that L1 interference has the strongest impact on pronunciation accuracy, particularly in fricatives and diphthongs, where learners substitute unfamiliar sounds with native ones. L2 exposure significantly improves pronunciation, especially through authentic media and interactions. Motivation, while influential, indirectly aids pronunciation by fostering self-directed learning. However, formal education has minimal impact, as pronunciation receives little focus in traditional classrooms. These results highlight the need for targeted phonetic training, immersive exposure, and explicit pronunciation instruction. The study calls for pedagogical reforms to enhance communicative competence and confidence.

Abstract

English is an international language that all school levels make it one of the subjects in their school program. Many students still faced difficulties in writing recount text such as they do not know how to make a good sentence and lack of vocabularies. This research was conducted to find out the effect of Thesaurus application on students’ writing ability of recount text at the tenth grade students of SMAN 3 Palangka Raya. The method used in this research was a pre-experimental research. The sample was taken by Purposive Sampling technique from class of X MIPA 3, tenth-grade students of SMAN 3 Palangka Raya in the academic year 2022/2023. Test in form of writing recount text was used as the instrument to collect the data needed. The data of test were analyzed by using the non-parametric statistics of the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that Sig (2-tailed) higher than 0.005 (0.406 > 0.005). It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected and the null hypothesis (Ho) was accepted. It can be concluded that there is no significant effect of Thesaurus application on students’ writing ability at the tenth-grade students of SMAN 3 Palangka Raya in the academic year 2022/2023.

Abstract

__________________________________________________________________________________________ This qualitative case study investigates students’ perceptions of using English-language films for vocabulary acquisition. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four students from the English Education Study Program at the University of Palangka Raya who regularly watch English-language films. The data were then analysed thematically, resulting in five main themes: (1) first experiences with English fantasy films, (2) perceived benefits, (3) effectiveness of vocabulary acquisition, (4) learning techniques, and (5) integration of films into formal education. The findings reveal that films provide authentic and multimodal input that supports both incidental and intentional vocabulary learning. Learners’ success is influenced by strategic engagement, such as note-taking, dictionary use, translation, and reflection. The duration of language exposure also distinguishes early and late beginners. Participants emphasized that teacher guidance through pre-, during-, and post-viewing activities enhances comprehension, scaffolds vocabulary acquisition, and helps overcome challenges such as fast-paced dialogues or inaccurate subtitles. This study provides qualitative evidence supporting Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Schmidt’s Noticing Hypothesis, demonstrating the interaction between cognitive and affective factors in film-based learning. The results highlight the pedagogical potential of integrating English-language films into formal instruction. A structured, engaging, and learner-cantered approach can optimize vocabulary mastery while maintaining motivation and exposure to authentic language. Future research is recommended to employ experimental or longitudinal designs to measure observable improvement and further explore the underlying mechanisms of language learning through audiovisual media.
