Abstract

This paper (1) explores learners’ initial perceptions of English, and (2) explains the development of the perceptions before coming to Kampung Inggris. This paper is based on ethnographic research using interpretivism as a paradigm to understand the learners’ perceptions. The research site was Kampung Inggris TulungRejo village, Pare, Kediri, East Java. The participants were the students in the village. The data were collected through interview. The data were analyzed using iterative model from Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2013). In this model, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing/verification were used to analyze the data. In the data analysis process, multiple coding and categorizations were used to figure out patterns. The theoretical framework was used in data interpretation. This study found out that (1) the learners’ initial perception on English varied according to their experiences. Most of the perceptions before coming to Kampung Inggris were negative. These perception were affected by the learners’ learning process, the environment and the surrounding people. In the learners’ reality, English was viewed merely on its intrinsic feature. (2) The learners’ perception was developed due to their life experiences. After experiencing some turning points, they believed that English was important for their lives. This change of perception also changed their attitude and became their motivations in learning English in Kampung Inggris.

The result of the research is that English cafe uses several media, such as website, social media, banner, poster and flyer, to convey their identity for their future customers. Setting, relationship of the class participants, and interaction modes are parts of the learning process that strengthen the identity construction. Daily talk premium, questionnaire, and management weekly meeting are English cafe’s effort to maintain the construction when there are complaints from its costumers. To conclude, English Cafe has a unique and different concept compared to the other conventional English course. The institution does not only offer a concept, but also constructs its identity in their customers and future customers perception.

Abstract

This research aims to develop reading materials in the form of short stories based on Central Kalimantan culture. Reading materials for university level in the form of local content are still limited. In fact, Dayak culture can be an interesting alternative reading material besides providing academic texts to students. Based on the needs analysis, it is known that at the English Education Study Program of Universitas Palangka Raya, there is a need for reading materials that are able to improve reading skills while containing relevant texts with text difficulty levels that are appropriate for student levels. Further, the reading materials should be in accordance with student interests and needs, contain effective learning strategies, and integrate culture or local content. This research applies Developmental Research in accordance with the ADDIE stages (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). Based on the Evaluation, the developed reading materials are in the form of short stories that contain Central Kalimantan cultural aspects embedded in activities, name of people, name of places, and name of food. The reading materials also contain exercises that demand students' skills in reading comprehension.

This study examines the effect of using the Odd One Out game to improve students’ knowledge of clothing-related English vocabulary. The research includes introducing the Odd One Out game to students, explaining its concepts, planning and designing lessons using this game, evaluating and measuring learning outcomes. The study was conducted at SDN 6 Menteng, Central Kalimantan, involving 26 fifth-grade students from class 5B. This game incorporates in-depth material exploration, development of learning activities, and group discussions in the classroom. Implementing the Odd One Out game has demonstrated that students in the school significantly improved their knowledge of clothing-related English vocabulary. The learning process also fostered a competitive and engaging classroom environment. The implementation of the learning process through the Odd One Out game was conducted successfully and efficiently. Game-based learning methods can serve as an effective solution to address the low interest of elementary school students in learning English vocabulary.

Abstract

Students often face difficulties in academic writing, especially in achieving grammatical accuracy, clear structure, and coherence. These challenges are more evident for Indonesian EFL learners, who have limited exposure to English and often struggle with grammar, vocabulary, and idea organization. With the advancement of technology, writing assistance tools such as Grammarly, DeepL, and QuillBot have emerged to help students improve their writing quality. The interviews were conducted in the Indonesian language and lasted approximately 15-20 minutes each for the participants. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) to identify recurring patterns and central themes related to students’ perceptions. Although the data were obtained through participants’ personal narratives, thematic analysis was chosen because the study focuses on perceptions rather than reconstructing life stories. The findings indicate that Grammarly is the most commonly used tool, followed by QuillBot and DeepL. Participants reported that these tools are beneficial for improving writing accuracy, saving time, boosting confidence, and reducing stress. However, the study is limited by its relatively small sample size and the reliance on self-reported experiences, which may restrict the generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

__________________________________________________________________________________________ This qualitative case study investigates students’ perceptions of using English-language films for vocabulary acquisition. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four students from the English Education Study Program at the University of Palangka Raya who regularly watch English-language films. The data were then analysed thematically, resulting in five main themes: (1) first experiences with English fantasy films, (2) perceived benefits, (3) effectiveness of vocabulary acquisition, (4) learning techniques, and (5) integration of films into formal education. The findings reveal that films provide authentic and multimodal input that supports both incidental and intentional vocabulary learning. Learners’ success is influenced by strategic engagement, such as note-taking, dictionary use, translation, and reflection. The duration of language exposure also distinguishes early and late beginners. Participants emphasized that teacher guidance through pre-, during-, and post-viewing activities enhances comprehension, scaffolds vocabulary acquisition, and helps overcome challenges such as fast-paced dialogues or inaccurate subtitles. This study provides qualitative evidence supporting Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Schmidt’s Noticing Hypothesis, demonstrating the interaction between cognitive and affective factors in film-based learning. The results highlight the pedagogical potential of integrating English-language films into formal instruction. A structured, engaging, and learner-cantered approach can optimize vocabulary mastery while maintaining motivation and exposure to authentic language. Future research is recommended to employ experimental or longitudinal designs to measure observable improvement and further explore the underlying mechanisms of language learning through audiovisual media.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the learning experience and English exposure level of English Language Education students at Palangka Raya University. The study used mixed methods with data collection through closed-ended questionnaires and open-ended questions, which were analyzed descriptively quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that most students have a fairly positive learning experience, especially in terms of motivation and engagement. However, the active use of English is still inconsistent. Informal exposure to English through digital media appears to be more dominant, with a higher tendency of utilizing entertainment content than educational content. Meanwhile, the use of English in formal contexts and social environments is still relatively limited. These findings emphasize the importance of learning strategies that are able to combine formal, informal, and self-learning approaches in a balanced manner to support students' overall mastery of English.

Abstract

This study aims to design a culturally-based English textbook for Performing Arts Education students. The research applies Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to the ADDIE framework to improve English competence and local culture appreciation. A needs analysis of 36 students found that 82.35% have basic English skills and low speaking confidence. Multimedia elements, culturally relevant themes, and practical ways integrating English learning to artistic surroundings were popular with students. Experts validated content relevancy and linguistic accuracy but suggested simplifying idioms and adding cultural examples for accessibility. Two chapters' initial trials were moderately effective, scoring 3.39 for relevance and 3.89 for clarity. Changes improved cultural integration and interactivity. Two trials with six amended chapters showed considerable gains in clarity and relevance, scoring 4.53 and 4.17, respectively. Contextual vocabulary, realistic grammar exercises, and local-global cultural balance impressed students. The study found that CRP and CLIL in ESP materials improve English and cultural awareness. Long-term effects and digital tools for accessibility and interaction should be further explored.

Abstract

Learning experience is an integral factor of language perception construction. Having a positive experience is more likely to construct a positive perception of the language. English students in Universitas Palangka Raya are indigenous people in Kalimantan who comes from different parts of Central Kalimantan. These students experienced learning processes that are highly influenced by the condition of the school, the teachers, and their environment. This study aims to understand the indigenous students learning experiences in Central Kalimantan to explore the construction process of their perception of English throughout these experiences. This study involved five English education students. We conducted a conversational interview to collect the participants’ stories of their learning experienced. We found that all of the participants chose English education study program because they were interested in the language. These interests are built through their language learning experience. Even if the students reported school and classroom environments as the biggest factor of their negative experience of English, they still found interest in English through usage in their lives such as hobbies and communication.
