Abstract

The present study aims at investigating freshmen’s English (hereafter is called L2) speaking anxiety level in the classroom. The data were derived from online survey on 155 freshmen on two English Education Departments in Palangka Raya. The result indicated that the freshmen were experiencing a high level of L2 speaking anxiety in the classroom. Further, the result of independent sample t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference on freshmen’s L2 speaking anxiety level by their gender. Similarly, one-way ANOVA analysis indicated that there was no a statistical difference on freshmen’s L2 speaking anxiety by English learning experience. Considering the findings, a high level of speaking anxiety is a serious problem to measure as it will make students disinclined to L2 speaking activities leading to poor L2 speaking fluency.

Abstract

Speaking skills mastery is often perceived as a parameter of success in language learning. Following this situation, numerous studies and practices related to teaching speaking are continuously conducted in an attempt to best facilitate learners in developing their speaking skills. However, it catches our attention when one of our students can outperform others in speaking. This situation yields a question, “What makes him so different from the other students?”. As an attempt to elicit information about his English learning experience and strategy, especially in developing his English-speaking skills, we decided to conduct a Narrative Inquiry Research. Our research, therefore, addresses the following questions: (i) How is the advanced user’s perception of language learning? and (ii) How did the advanced user build the strategy to speak English fluently? The result of interview revealed that extramural English and some affective factors contribute to his English fluency. Investigating this phenomenon gives us insightful information, especially for language learners who want to be successful in language learning. The finding of this study is also expected to help teachers in their instructional design and practice.

Abstract

Developing reading habits is part of empowering education; therefore, reading habits should be instilled from an early age. However, not all children can experience facilities such as reading various types of reading books that suit their interests and preferences, as is the case with children in orphanages. As a response, this community service plays a part in increasing children’s interest in reading. The program we proposed, namely Reading Corner, took place at Imanuel Orphanage in Palangka. The program was carried out by assessing the needs, designing the Reading Corner, and implementing it. Reading Corner serves as a facility for extensive reading at home. Reading Corner allows the children to read various types of books based on their preferences. The result of this program indicated that the children looked enthusiastic about the books as they chose and borrowed the book to read. The closer children are to the books, the more often they will use their time to access and read the books. In line with that, it is expected that the literacy level of Indonesian will increase.

Abstract

Teachers have essential roles in facilitating ELT, and their attitudes towards the approaches applied will contribute to the success of language learning. The objective of this research was to examine teachers' attitudes towards the implementation of Extramural English (EE) in ELT. One-shot survey research was conducted in rural areas of a regency in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, with 60 high school English teachers participating as the sample. A survey incorporating both closed- and open-ended questions was administered to gather data. The data analysis involved calculating the percentages from the closed-ended responses, followed by a detailed explanation of the teachers' answers to the open-ended questions. The findings indicate that most teachers have integrated Environmental Education (EE) activities throughout all phases of English Language Teaching (ELT). They employ EE, particularly in conjunction with Technology, due to its ability to broaden their knowledge, improve their skills, effectively engage students' interests, and facilitate English learning. Furthermore, the advantages of utilizing EE significantly surpass the associated challenges. Therefore, developing English Language Teaching (ELT) to meet students' English as an additional language (EAL) needs is crucial, as EAL plays a significant role in students' language development. In conclusion, teachers have a positive attitude towards implementing English Education (EE) in English Language Teaching (ELT) since it positively contributes to ELT.

Abstract

Extramural English, also known as English exposure beyond the classroom, has become increasingly relevant for language learning, especially with technological advancements. To better understand how extramural English contributes to the English learning process in the Indonesian context, this study explores the extramural English activities of Indonesian EFL learners. A total of seventy-three university students majoring in English Language Education participated in a survey, which gathered data on their extramural English preferences and perceived benefits for language skills. The data were then thematically analyzed. The findings revealed that receptive-related activities were the most popular, with participants frequently engaging in listening to English songs (94.5%), watching music videos with English captions (82.2%), and watching films or TV series in English with Indonesian subtitles (76.7%). These activities were favored because they were enjoyable and provided opportunities for English development. Moreover, most participants perceived extramural English as beneficial for enhancing their knowledge of language items, language skills, and cultural understanding. The findings suggest that EFL teachers should incorporate more productive extramural English tasks to promote balanced skill development among learners.  Keywords: Extramural English, digital learning, English development

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the conversations between Mr. Hundert and Sedgewick Bell in The Emperor’s Club through a qualitative case study with genre-based discourse analysis, grounded in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics. By employing techniques such as framing, foregrounding, backgrounding, and presupposition, the study reveals how linguistic choices reinforce ideological conflicts between moral idealism and pragmatic ambition. The findings suggest that these ideological tensions reflect broader dilemmas in character education, especially relevant to Indonesia’s Kurikulum Merdeka and the Pancasila Student Profile. The study has implications for literature-based pedagogy and ethical development in classroom settings.

Abstract

The influence of ICT in language teaching has become a new, exciting, and demanding area to explore. Moreover, concerning teachers' role as facilitators, it is necessary to explore how they perceive ICT use in language teaching and to describe the challenges they have been experiencing during its implementation. This qualitative study explored the integration and challenges of using ICT in EFL teaching. The participants of this study were six Indonesian EFL teachers from Central Kalimantan Province, and they were interviewed to gain information. The data from semi-structured interviews were thematically analyzed. The results of this qualitative study indicated that the teachers have integrated technological tools into their teaching activities in terms of web-based and non-web-based learning. Laptops and mobile phones were the most prominent technological tools used by the teachers in the classroom. Those technologies are purposively used in teaching EFL skills and evaluation. However, the implementation is challenging, as the teachers argued that they needed more professional training in dealing with technical issues, limited technological tools, internet network issues, and the digital divide. The outcomes strengthen the comprehension of the implementation of technologies in EFL learning and trigger advanced investigation about educational technology influence in the EFL education realm.
