Abstract

This study employs critical discourse analysis to examine recent advertising campaigns for mobile phones, focusing on a leading global brand. Conducted purely for academic purposes and not reflecting any official brand positions, our research uses a qualitative approach combining Fairclough’s 3D model and Kress and Van Leeuwen’s social semiotics theory. We analyze both textual and visual aspects of 2023 mobile phone advertisements to decode underlying ideologies. Our multimodal critical analysis reveals how linguistic and visual techniques construct aspirational yet constricting identities and lifestyles revolving around constant consumption of mobile technology. Findings demonstrate that these ads exert rhetorical power by addressing perceived shortcomings in target audiences’ lives and positioning new products as indispensable solutions. Imperatives compel viewers to envision improved lifestyles necessitating regular upgrades, while vibrant images of confident models reinforce ideological influence. This study showcases how critical discourse analysis can uncover subtle sociocultural assumptions and mechanisms of rhetorical influence in mobile technology promotions. It exposes how ads promise meaningful change but ultimately deliver superficial upgrades that sustain corporate interests. The key insight is that while ads link consumption to aspirational identities, a critical examination reveals this diversionary focus hinders pursuit of genuine social change. Our analysis contributes to the broader understanding of advertising discourse and its societal implications.

Abstract

This research analyzes the transformation of the digital nomad ecosystem in Bali as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict that began in February 2022. Using a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design, this research reveals how the conflict has triggered a wave of Russian migration to Bali, which increased from around 1,800 people in the pre-pandemic period to more than 58,000 people in 2022. This phenomenon has created “Russian enclaves” especially in the Canggu and Uluwatu areas, triggering significant transformations in demographic, economic, regulatory and socio-cultural aspects. The results show a restructuring of the local economy, characterized by a 35-40% increase in property prices during 2022-2023, a proliferation of Russian-oriented businesses, and a shift in the local tourism value chain. Regulatory challenges are a crucial issue, especially regarding visa compliance and digital nomad work activities that fall in the regulatory “gray zone”. Socio-cultural dynamics show a complex spectrum of interactions, from social segregation to forms of cultural adaptation and acculturation. Local Balinese communities demonstrate significant adaptive capacity through the involvement of adat institutions in property regulation and cultural preservation initiatives. This research contributes to the theoretical discourse on “crisis-driven lifestyle migration” and “creative resilience” of local communities in response to global transformation. The implications of the research highlight the importance of integrated policies to manage the digital nomad phenomenon, ensure equitable distribution of economic benefits, and preserve local cultural values amidst the dynamics of global mobility.

Abstract

This research examines the future of green tourism in Bali, analyzing the challenges and opportunities facing the island in its sustainable tourism development efforts. The research adopts a multi-method qualitative approach, including a systematic literature review using the PRISMA method, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and participatory observation. Data were collected from key stakeholders in Bali's tourism industry, including experienced tourism operators, government officials, environmental experts, and community leaders representatives. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling, with the criteria of having a minimum of five years of experience in Bali's tourism industry or related fields. Their role was to provide insights into the current state of green tourism in Bali, challenges faced, and potential development opportunities. Key findings revealed significant challenges such as environmental damage from mass tourism, inadequate waste management, threats to biodiversity, cultural exploitation, and economic inequality. Nonetheless, Bali also shows great potential for green tourism development, including supportive government policies, community engagement opportunities, technological advances, and the growing global demand for sustainable tourism experiences. This research proposes a comprehensive strategy to boost green tourism in Bali, emphasizing stakeholder collaboration, sustainable tourism standards, eco-friendly infrastructure improvements, and awareness-raising campaigns.

Abstract

This research aimed to examine the relationships among destination image, self-congruity, and visiting intention, as well as the complementary mediating role of self-congruity between destination image and visiting intention. Using a questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument, the study included a sample of 397 participants from Generations Y and Z in Bali, selected through simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using first-order path analysis with structural equation modeling (SEM) in SmartPLS software. The results indicate that self-congruity plays a complementary mediating role between destination image and visiting intention. Additionally, destination image has a significant positive effect on self-congruity, which in turn positively influences visiting intention. These findings contribute to the Theory of Planned Behavior by providing insights into the relationships between destination image, self-congruity, and visiting intention, thereby reinforcing the theory’s underlying principles. From a practical standpoint, this research offers valuable insights for tourism industry stakeholders, aiding in the refinement of destination management and the development of more effective marketing strategies. Understanding the mediating role of self-congruity can help stakeholders identify specific areas for improvement to attract more visitors.

Abstract

Teaching English for Specific Purposes in the age of technological innovation necessitates a new strategy for communicative contexts that incorporates technology into the teaching and learning process. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach is considered a suitable approach in which students not only understand the content and context of situations that are practiced following the actual conditions in the industry but are also expected to be fluent in two-way communication. This study aims to develop an LMS-based communicative teaching material with the CLIL approach. Using the Research and Development method by applying the ADDIE model, 60 students were involved as the research subject, two lecturers were observed and interviewed, and three expert judges evaluated the quality of the communicative LMS-based materials developed. The results show that the developed materials were of excellent quality, with a mean score of 4.98 from the three expert judges, and the students have perfect perceptions towards both the LMS's features in English learning materials and the use of the CLIL approach in English learning materials. Pedagogically, it is advised that if internet access is unavailable, the lecturers figure out a means to get over last-minute obstacles.
