Abstract

Speaking in second or foreign language has often viewed as the most demand-ing of the four skills. But, most of the ESL learners consider it as a difficult skill to be mastered. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate the problems of speaking English faced by first year FIA students of the SEUSL. Objective of this study was to identify the main problems. Sixty samples were selected from first year FIA students using random sampling technique. Mixed method re-search design was employed in this study. Questionnaire was administrated among sixty students to collect quantitative data and the qualitative data was col-lected through a focused-group interview with six selected students from the samples. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS and qualitative data was recorded and transcribed. The findings of this study revealed that students have different kinds of prob-lem in speaking English, like, getting nervous, feeling fear of making mistakes, lack confidence, difficulty in choosing words appropriately and feeling shy. The main factors that caused those problems were reported as lack of confidence, lack of vocabulary, fear of making mistakes and poor listening skill. The stu-dents expect their lecturers to provide more collaborative works, conduct some exciting games and use mother tongue where it is necessary to give instructions to enhance their oral proficiency.

Abstract

This research explores into the Difficulties encountered in speaking English for second language school leavers at IPHS Campus, Akkaraipattu. The objective of the research were; to identify the difficulties encountered by school leavers when speaking English, to explore the factors and root causes of the difficulties, and the factors influences on their studies, to make them aware and understand by different and easy techniques to fulfill their studying target and objectives, to give them a proper guidance and good practice ways and to make them confident to overcome the struggles in their speaking skills. The research used a mixed method of qualitative and quantitate approach to collect data deeper in accordance. The first approach, questionnaire conducted to 24 students the rest of the instruments were implanted to 20 students. Using diverse research instruments, including questionnaires, practical tests, observations and interviews, the study categorizes difficulties into linguistic and non-linguistic domains. And the root causes are classified into educational, psycholinguistic, and environmental factors. The study not only conveys the difficulties but also provides suggestions and practical insights for learners and educators. A versatile approach involving appropriate curriculum adaptation, consistent practice, educator training, psychological support, family involvement, and technological integration is recommended. Implementing psychological support, like confidence-building workshops, and collaborating with families to emphasize language-based activities at home are crucial. In the digital age, integrating technology, such as language-learning apps and virtual exchange platforms, extends language exposure. These measures enhance the spoken English proficiency of second language school leavers, ensuring preparation for effective communication in diverse linguistic contexts. Techniques and suggestions derived from the analysis offer a comprehensive approach to develop effective spoken English skills among second language school leavers, contributing to the ongoing discussion on language education strategies.

Abstract

This research delves into the impact of descriptive writing proficiency among grade ten students in Al-Hidaya Maha Vidyalaya where English is taught as a second language. This research aims to analyze the use of adjective in writing descriptive text among grade ten students. The objectives of the study are; to identify any challenges or barriers faced by grade 10 students in incorporating adjectives into their descriptive writing compositions, to develop a personal writing style that utilizes adjectives effectively to create vivid and engaging descriptive passages, to reflect on personal growth in descriptive writing skills through self-assessment and goal setting, to identify the types of adjective and apply suitable adjectives in the appropriate place. Data collection methods include interviews, questionnaires, pre-tests, and post-tests conducted on a sample of 30 students. Results indicate a notable improvement in descriptive writing proficiency from pre-test scores (33.33%) to post-test scores (100%). Notably, the study emphasizes the significance of innovative teaching techniques to enhance students' descriptive writing skills and overall language competence. The teachers should give more motivations to the students in teaching learning process about applying adjective in writing descriptive text effectively.

Abstract

This study was carried out with the aim of overcoming the difficulties confronted by grade 7 students of KM/ST/Al-Marjan Muslim Ladies college (N.S )Sammanthurai, Ampara in using pronunciation in appropriate place in communication. Because use correct pronunciation in communication has been a huge challenge for most of the grade 7 students at KM/ST/Al-Marjan Muslim Ladies college (N.S )Sammanthurai, Ampara. Therefore, 20 grade 7 students were randomly selected for data collection from the total population (60 students). This study was a qualitative research  and data collection method were qualitative. The research instruments of this study were observation and a test. According to the analysis of the observation, the findings show that most of the participants do not have the previous knowledge about consonants pronounce. They are majority aware of only ‘ /ch/ ’ ,/d/ ’, ‘ /g/’, ‘ /th/ ’ words. Most of them do not have ideas about ‘ /v/ ’, ‘ /w/ ’, ‘ /sh/ ’ , ‘ /s/ ’ , ‘ /l/ ’ , ‘ /r/ ’,‘ /x/ ’ and more. Further, according to the analysis of the test, a large amount of  the participants (13 participants) failed to ‘ /d/ ’, ‘ /g/ pronounce the sounds in the given words. Likewise, with regard to use of  ‘ /l/ ’ , ‘ /r/ ’ in words, the finding show that 8 participants correctly pronounce ‘ /l/ ’ , ‘ /r/ ’in only one word out of 5 places to pronounce ‘ /l/ ’ , ‘ /r/’ words. Moreover, no participants correctly pronounce ‘ /l/ ’ , ‘ /r/ ’ in all  five words. The reason is, students do not have the knowledge of pronunciations accurately in communication. This problem can be overcome when the followings are implemented such as teaching consonants pronunciation rules using deductive method, applying interesting pronouncing activities and games in the classroom, correcting students’ pronounce, strictly focusing on pronunciation error, giving reading practice and explaining the way the pronunciation have been used in communication.

Abstract

Reading Aloud strategy used in the teaching reading skills, which means the teachers and students pronounced the word loudly in front of the class to get the information. The study aimed to enhance the loud reading skills in English among second language learners, specifically grade 6 students at KM/KM/Shams Central College, Maruthamunai. The objectives of the research were; to identify pronunciation difficulties encountered by the students of KM/KM/Shams Central College, Maruthamunai, to identify the factors influence on their loud reading skills, to assist students in improving loud reading skills and to assess the best strategies for enhancing their loud reading easily. The research involved a sample of 20 students after the pre-test and data was collected through a loud reading test and interviews. The data collected was analyzed in MS Excel. According to this research the findings were; pronunciation difficulties and factors influencing loud reading skills; students' struggles with pronunciation impacted their confidence and participation in English classes and it highlighted the impact of teachers' teaching methods on students' reading abilities and their attitudes towards reading. Positive attitudes towards reading were found to significantly aid in students' literacy development, while negative experiences could hinder progress. The comparison of pre-test and post-test marks further supported the success of these strategies. The read aloud strategy was identified as an effective method for improving fluency and conveying meaning through reading. The teachers' methodologies and attitudes towards reading significantly influence students' reading abilities. The study recommends introducing the research findings to grade 6 students and providing them with special attention and motivation to overcome reading difficulties. It suggests that through effective intervention, students can become fluent in learning English as a second language.

Abstract

This research investigates strategies to enhance reading comprehension among second language learners, specifically focusing on grade six students at KM/STR/ Muslim Madya Maha Vidyalaya. Many students struggle with reading comprehension, leading to low academic performance and a negative attitude toward English learning. The study aims to identify effective reading strategies that can improve students' understanding, motivation, and confidence in reading.A mixed-method approach was used, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data collection. The research involved pre-tests, post-tests, questionnaires, mind-mapping activities, and observations. Findings revealed that students initially had limited knowledge of reading strategies and faced difficulties in understanding text meaning. However, after introducing seven specific reading strategies, students showed significant improvement in their ability to analyze texts, predict meanings, and develop critical thinking skills. The study highlights the importance of integrating structured reading strategies in teaching methodologies. Recommendations include using visualization techniques, audio formats, and interactive discussions to make reading a more engaging experience. The findings suggest that developing a habit of reading, increasing metacognition skills, and expanding knowledge of various genres can further enhance comprehension levels. Ultimately, this research contributes valuable insights into improving second-language reading education through targeted interventions.

Abstract

Hypermedia-based adverb learning refers to facilitate adverbs including graphs, images, animation, sound and hypertext with constructive knowledge. It exhibits a central part in the success of the students learning English as a second language. The study was to identify the productivity of hypermedia-based adverb learning on the performance in the speaking skill development of the students in the Higher National Diploma in English. It was conducted in Higher National Diploma in English course of Advanced Technological Institute - Sammanthurai at Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education under the Ministry of Education. 90 students from Higher National Diploma in English – class - A were used as the experimental group and the equivalent numbers of students from Higher National Diploma in English – class - B were taken as the controlled group. A pre-test with picture description was led for both the groups to find out the previous proficiency level of speaking skill with adverbs of the students to compare them and the mean differences were found to be negligible for both the groups from the pre-test. Later, the experimental group used hypermedia-based adverb learning based on selected learning strategies: activities and arrangements in presentation with video and audio-based system for six months with ninety hours learning while the controlled group was taught without the use of hypermedia-based adverb learning. After six months a post-test with picture description was conducted for both the groups. When the post-test was conducted the mean (-0.091) was slightly improved for the group - B than the pre-test, and the mean (-2.871) was significantly improved for the group - A in the post-test. Thus, it is found that there is a positive relationship between the hyper-media based adverb learning and the performance in speaking skill development with adverbs. The research findings indicate that hyper-media based adverb learning improves speaking skill development with adverbs of the learners of English as a second language.

Abstract

Nowadays the vocabulary learning plays an important role in language teaching especially in the context where English is taught as a foreign language. This is because lexical competence is now seen a heart of language learning and the ultimate goal of language teaching is to improve the language competence of the learners. Additionally, vocabulary has been recognized as an important factor for language learning because insufficient vocabulary knowledge leads the learners to encounter difficulties in second language learning. Learners can significantly improve their language competence by developing their ability to use of vocabulary learning strategies. However, the present study primarily aimed at investigating how KM/KM/R.K.M.Girls’ Vidyalaya, students deals with vocabulary problems. Data was gathered for this study through Interview, Questionnaire and pre-test, post-test. Interviewing teachers and students and written assignment given to students. Individual attention was paid on the 20 samples from the pre-test marks. The average marks of the selected sample at the level were 50%. However, when the post-test had been it was 80%. These research finding are significant important since this will help the teachers to further their teaching methods and find ways to help students avoid marking error in subject-verb agreement. The result of this finding is the identification of difficulties in vocabulary learning and the possibilities to rectify them. The difficulties find outed were: Knowing the meaning of the vocabulary, Memorizing the spelling and writing with the correct spelling, Motivation in learning, The student’s talent in language, The student’s interest in vocabulary learning. Some suggestions and recommendations have been made to address this problem. They include giving sample exercises and practices to students, giving some teaching techniques to the teachers to be implemented in the classroom. All these efforts are meant for remedies to solve the problem in learning vocabulary in writing.
