Abstract

This study investigates the language styles employed by lecturers at the State Tourism Polytechnic of Makassar during classroom interactions, focusing on their implications for the teaching and learning process. Using a qualitative research design grounded in classroom discourse analysis, the study employs a postpositivist approach to explore the nuanced communication dynamics between lecturers and students. Data were collected through observations, document reviews, and audio-visual recordings and analyzed using the Interactive Model of Data Analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The findings reveal the absence of the frozen style, typically associated with ceremonial contexts, in classroom settings. Instead, four language styles were identified: formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. The formal style was the most prevalent, used by five lecturers to maintain structure and professionalism. The consultative style, observed in four lecturers, fostered dialogue and collaboration, while the casual style, used by three lecturers, facilitated a relaxed and approachable classroom atmosphere. The intimate style, employed by one lecturer, highlighted its role in building personal connections and providing individualized support. These findings underscore the critical role of language styles in shaping classroom interactions and enhancing student engagement. The study emphasizes the importance of linguistic adaptability and cultural sensitivity in teaching, providing practical implications for teacher training and pedagogical practices. By strategically employing diverse language styles, educators can create dynamic, inclusive, and effective learning environments. Future research should explore student perspectives and cross-cultural variations in language styles to broaden the understanding of their impact on education.

Abstract

Rumpon, as a fish-aggregating device, has long been used by tuna handline fishermen in Bone Bay, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Information on the characteristics of tuna handline fishing in the area is very limited and is very much needed as study material for tuna fishing strategies and fisheries policies. This research aims to understand the results of handline catches and sustainable solutions for tuna fisheries in rumpon areas. The data used is the result of observations using 19 ships based at PPI Lonrae and data collection for 5 years (2018-2022). The results show that the composition of the main catch is dominated by yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus), and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). In general, the size of fish that are not suitable for catching for the yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, and skipjack tuna, consecutively, is 54.0%, 45.1%, and 31.9%. This finding further clarifies that the percentage of tuna and skipjack tuna that are not suitable for catching is still very large. Continuous and large-scale fishing of juvenile tuna could cause fish resources to continue to decline in the future. Technically, what fishermen need to understand is, in addition to the strategy of lowering fishing gear deeper, the time of fishing and the type of bait used.

Abstract

The operation of purse seine by fishermen at the Pontap Fish Landing Base creates very high competition in fishing activities. This competition can certainly raise concerns about overfishing without considering the appropriateness of the size of the fish caught. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the composition and suitability of the size of the fish caught on purse-seine vessels at the Pontap Fish Landing Base. The study was conducted at the Pontap Fish Landing Base from August 13 to October 12, 2024. The research method used was observational, and the data analysis was descriptive. The results of the study showed that the composition of the purse seine catch at the Pontap Fish Landing Base consisted of 6 species of fish, namely shortbodied mackerel 9,252 kg (25.47%), indian mackerel 2,034 kg (5.60%), sardine 3,060 kg (8.42%), mackerel scad 19,980 kg (55%), skipjack tuna 1,080 (2.97%) and torpedo scad 920 kg (2.53%). Based on the length of the fish’s body when the gonads first mature, shortbodied mackerel, indian mackerel, and mackerel scad are suitable for catching. In contrast, skipjack tuna, sardine, and torpedo scad are not suitable for catching.
