Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Monteggia fracture is a rare and clinically challenging condition, characterized by a non-union fracture of the proximal ulna with dislocation of the radial head. This case report presents the case of a 42-year-old woman with a chronic Monteggia fracture diagnosed 21 years after the initial injury, highlighting the importance of a careful patient history and radiographic investigation. Case presentation: A 42-year-old woman presented with left elbow pain and a history of significant trauma 21 years previously. Physical examination revealed limited range of motion and radiographic examination revealed a nonfused fracture of the proximal ulna with dislocation of the radial head. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) reconstruction of the ulna and excision of the radial head. Conclusion: Successful surgical reconstruction of chronic Monteggia fractures results in significant improvements in the patient's function and quality of life. This case report emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention to prevent long-term complications and achieve optimal functional outcomes.

The knee joint is a joint that is very often affected by OA. Data from the Central for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that as much as 40% of the population aged > 70 years suffer from knee OA. To determine the incidence, risk factors and relationship between risk factors for the occurrence of Knee Osteoarthritis at Bhayangkara Hospital Makassar in 2023. This Method Description research using a Cross Sectional approach. The incidence of Knee Osteoarthritis at Bhayangkara Makassar Hospital in 2023 there were 186 patients, the presentation of patient age <40 years in this study was 28.5% and >40 years is 71.5%, the gender presentation of patients in this study were male as much as 31.7% and women as much as 68.3%, the distribution of obesity in this study was 68.3% and not obese as much as 31.7%, the presentation of work patients on the incidence of osteoarthritis where in this study 33.9% worked and 66.1% did not work and there was a relationship between age, gender, obesity and work on the incidence of osteoarthritis.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis is more common in menopausal women due to decreased estrogen levels, which impacts joint health. Due to the high prevalence of OA in menopausal women with a high BMI, this study was conducted to determine the correlation between BMI and the incidence of OA in this group. The purpose of this study is to identify the correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI) and the incidence of osteoarthritis in menopausal women at Sinjai District Hospital during July-September 2024 period. This study applied an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 50 menopausal women selected through consecutive sampling techniques. Data were collected through interviews, direct BMI measurements, and medical record reviews. Analysis was performed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test. Based on the univariate analysis involving 50 respondents, it showed that most OA patients had an obese BMI (46%), while the normal category was only found in 26% of patients. Bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between BMI and OA (p-value = 0.007, p < 0.05). These results indicate that post-menopausal women with a BMI > 25 (obese category) have a higher risk of developing OA compared to those with a normal BMI. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant relationship between BMI and OA in postmenopausal women, in which obesity is an important risk factor. This study recommends public education about the importance of maintaining ideal body weight as an effort to prevent OA in postmenopausal women, as well as the need for further research to explore the role of estrogen hormone levels in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis.
