Abstract

There are a lot of holy texts in Islam, like Al-Qur'an and Hadith, discussing the Sun that will rise in the West. However, a study has yet to be conducted to explain this phenomenon from a scientific point of view. It creates several issues, such as the explanation of the Sun rising from the West from the point of view of religion and scientific terms, nor the way to prove and predict the time of this phenomenon. This research was compiled using a qualitative analysis method with a case study approach. This approach limits its analysis tools to one specific case. This study used an analysis of the Sun's azimuth shift at the time of the Equinox to prove the possibility of sunrise from the West. With this method, it is discovered that in a religious view, the rising Sun from the West is seen as a real event and will occur physically. Meanwhile, science is to explain how possible scenarios can cause this phenomenon to occur. In addition, an analysis of the shift in the Sun's rising point concerning the azimuth of the Sun at the time of Equinox cannot prove and cannot predict when the Sun will rise from the West, which is a sign of doomsday.

Abstract

Qibla direction in mosques, historically, was determined using simple methods and traditional tools, resulting in relatively low accuracy. This study aims to analyze the methods and precision of Qibla direction at Jami’ Al-Anwar Mosque, Bandar Lampung, using a qualitative field approach supported by modern instruments. The findings indicate that the true Qibla direction is 295° 18′ 25.82″, while the mosque’s current orientation measured with a theodolite is 295° 12′ 10″ and with a mizwala instrument is 295° 12′ 13.82″. The difference of only 0° 6′ 15.82″ classifies the mosque’s Qibla as accurate according to deviation tolerance theory. Contributing factors include the use of an istiwā’ stick to determine cardinal directions, advances in scientific knowledge, and religious motivations to ensure precision. These results highlight the significance of combining traditional techniques and modern technology to maintain the accuracy of Qibla orientation in historic mosques.

Abstract

The Insidād Bāb al-Ijtihād discourse has a huge influence on the paradigm shift of Islamic law in modern times. This discourse say that the study of Islamic law has been finalized and the answers formulated by the imam madhhab, so the exploration of the law afterwards is irrelevant. There are critics who consider that ijtihad is supposed to exist because it is a bridge between the nass (text) and al-waqiʿ (reality). In the study of Falak, ijtihad is deemed necessary to exist because the development of methods, technology, and calculation in it progresses very fast. This raises the need for relevant fiqh laws that accommodate all existing changes. On those grounds, the question arises whether the Insidad Bab al-Ijtihad is relevant if applied in the study of Falak today. Through the method of literature review and descriptive-deductive analysis, it was found that: Insidad Bab al-Ijtihad is not relevant in the realm of Falak studies. The development of the methods and technology in Falak requires the process of ijtihad to exist.
