Abstract

Background: Uji Tahap Bersama is a form of formative assessment initiated by the Association of Indonesian Medical Education Institutions (AIPKI) and the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) to maintain the quality of medical student learning in Indonesia. The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Andalas uses the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method in organizing an educational system with summative assessment in the form of a computer-based Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) exam. Formative and summative assessment is a form of assessment that assesses the extent to which students understand the learning material that has been given. This study aims to determine the correlation between summative and formative assessment results in medical students' classes in 2017 and 2018, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Andalas. Methods: This analytic, cross-sectional research involved 174 medical students from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Andalas, representing the 2017 and 2018 classes. The participants completed all pre-clinical phase blocks (except elective blocks) and took Uji Tahap Bersama I and II during their respective periods. Purposive sampling, meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria, determined the sample. The secondary data, which included the results of Uji Tahap Bersama I and II as well as MCQ scores before remedial, were analyzed through regression using the Pearson correlation test. To determine the extent to which MCQ affects the UTB outcomes, the coefficient of determination (r2) is used, which is obtained from the square of the correlation coefficient (r). The findings were interpreted based on Colton's correlation interpretation guidelines. Results: The findings revealed significant correlations in all four analyses conducted. UTB I results correlated significantly with average MCQ scores for the 1st to 4th semesters, while UTB II results correlated substantially with average MCQ block scores for the 1st to 7th semesters across batches. These correlations ranged from moderate to very strong. Conclusion: This study establishes a noteworthy correlation between UTB results and the average MCQ scores among medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Andalas. The findings underscore the relevance of UTB as a formative assessment tool in maintaining and gauging the quality of medical education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, new approaches to health promotion have been developed. The target of health promotion is all ages, including children. Elementary school-age children do not yet know what is good for their physical health, including choosing healthy snacks. Consuming unsafe food can cause health problems in groups of people, leading to increasing health disparities globally. Children buy snacks based on their preferences without paying attention to the food ingredients. Children still have relatively little knowledge about healthy snacks. The aim of this activity is to provide outreach to educate elementary school-age children about healthy snacks and the importance of balanced nutrition. Community service activities were carried out on July 28 2021 from 07.30 WIB to 10.30 WIB in the classrooms of SD Negeri 03 Bukit Tambun Tulang attended by students in grades 4 and 5 and accompanied by teachers. The activity consists of 3 stages, including the preparation stage, followed by the implementation stage, and closing with the evaluation stage. The activity was carried out by the Andalas Nagari IV Koto Hilie University KKN Team which is a collaboration from various departments. It is hoped that the results of this community service can shape students' attitudes and behavior towards improving health, especially in choosing healthy snacks and nutritious food at school and at home. During the implementation of this community service activity, students and teachers actively participated in this activity. Through the evaluation carried out at the end of the event, students and teachers gave positive responses, and it is hoped that similar activities can improve the understanding and skills of teachers and students at SDN 03 Bukit Tambun Tulang.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the chronic diseases that has received attention in Indonesia. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) stated that diabetes is among the global emergencies with the fastest growth in the 21st century. The prevalence of this disease is estimated to continue increasing worldwide. Health promotion is one of the preventive efforts that can be undertaken, one of which is through educational methods. The aim is for the community to have sufficient knowledge so that they are willing to maintain and preserve their health. Increasing knowledge about diabetes is crucial to raise awareness of health maintenance. Health education can be implemented in community service activities. This activity was carried out on July 30, 2023, in Koto Majidin Mudik Village, Kerinci Regency, Jambi Province. The activity was conducted through the stages of preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The activity was carried out by the Community Service (KKN) team from Andalas University 2023, Koto Majidin Mudik Village, which was a collaboration of various departments, working in cooperation with the village and the Kemantan Community Health Center (Puskesmas). During the implementation of the activity, the community actively participated. Through the evaluation conducted at the end of the activity, the village, health center, and the community provided positive responses. The results of this community service are expected to provide knowledge, especially in the prevention of diabetes mellitus, and an understanding of healthy lifestyles, thereby forming a healthy community for the future quality of human resources.

Abstract

Background: School-aged children are particularly vulnerable to soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infections due to frequent exposure to contaminated soil during play and poor personal hygiene practices. Although games have been widely used as educational tools in health promotion, there is limited research on the effectiveness of board games specifically designed to prevent STH infections in children. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a board game-based educational intervention in enhancing knowledge of STH among elementary school students. Methods: Analytical experimental design using a pre-test and post-test intervention approach without a control group was employed. The subjects of this study were elementary school students in grades 3 to 6 who met specific criteria. A total of 94 students participated. Knowledge was assessed using questionnaires. The intervention involved small-group sessions (4–6 students per group) using a custom-designed educational board game about STH. The collected data were analyzed using a dependent t-test, while multivariate ordinal regression was employed for multivariate analysis. Results: The average test score improved from 0.60 (± 0.15) to 0.74 (± 0.14) post-intervention, representing a significant 14% increase in knowledge (p = 0.00). Age was not a significant predictor of post-test performance (β = 0.310; p = 0.429). Male students (β = 1.068; p = 0.013) and those in grade 4 (β = 2.031; p = 0.036; OR = 7.62, 95% CI: 1.15–50.56) were significantly more likely to achieve higher post-test scores. Conclusion: Board game-based education effectively improved knowledge about soil-transmitted helminth infection among elementary school students. This study offers novel evidence supporting the use of board games for helminthiasis prevention.
