Abstract

Health education within schools plays a crucial role in enhancing children's health and establishing a safe and healthy learning environment. Despite this, the risk of illness in schools remains a concern, particularly for elementary school-aged children who are susceptible to sanitation-related health issues. The “Dokter Kecil” (or School Health Ambassador) program is designed to engage students in promoting the health of individuals, families, and their surroundings. This research aims to reintroduce the program in the Puskesmas Seberang Padang area, focusing on a promotive and preventive approach known as DINOS. The program's effectiveness was evaluated using pre-test and post-test questionnaires to assess the knowledge of the student participants. Based on the normality test of pretest and post-test score data using statistical tests, it is found that the Sig value (2-tailed) is 0.002 < 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the results of the DINOS material exposure and simulation on pre-test and post-test data. Data analysis revealed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results, indicating the effectiveness of the material presentation and DINOS simulation. These results are expected to help better school health program implementation and more successfully address health issues for Indonesian school-age children, especially in the Puskesmas Seberang Padang area.

Abstract

This service aims to improve children's understanding of balanced nutrition and promote their cultural awareness. The methods used in this program include integrated learning activities that focus on health education and cultural awareness. The materials used are from the "Isi Piringku" nutrition guide, which teaches children about the importance of a healthy diet. In addition, the program also organizes interactive sessions on local foods and iconic Indonesian landmarks to foster cultural pride. A total of 41 children participated in this activity, which included puzzles, flashcards, and a nutritional assessment to evaluate their dietary habits. In addition, traditional dances were also taught to introduce Indonesian culture and strengthen the cultural identity of migrant children. The results of the activities showed an increase in children's understanding of balanced nutrition and Indonesian culture, as well as the importance of pride in their heritage. The program also succeeded in introducing a more collaborative learning approach, involving parents in the child's education process. However, further research is needed on the role of parental involvement in supporting the success of this program. Overall, the "Anak CERIA" program is in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, especially in improving the education and health of Indonesian migrant children, as well as strengthening their cultural awareness. Abstract

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, featuring 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that address global issues like poverty, inequality, and education. This agenda highlights the importance of inclusivity, particularly regarding the vulnerabilities of migrant populations. Indonesian migrant children in Malaysia face significant barriers to education and health due to socio-economic factors and cultural challenges, often lacking access to formal education and relying on alternative learning centers like Sanggar Bimbingan. To tackle these issues, the "Anak CERIA" program was initiated by the international volunteer team from October 1 to 4, 2024, at Sanggar Bimbingan Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur (SIKL). A team of 13 diverse volunteers conducted integrated learning activities focused on health education and cultural awareness, using materials from the "Isi Piringku" nutritional guide. The program aimed to enhance the children's understanding of balanced nutrition and promote their cultural identity through interactive sessions about local foods and iconic Indonesian landmarks. A total of 41 children participated, benefiting from a collaborative learning approach that included puzzles and flashcards. Nutritional assessments were conducted to evaluate dietary habits, and traditional dances were taught to foster cultural pride. The program effectively supported the children's education and health while emphasizing the need for ongoing research into parental involvement. Overall, "Anak CERIA" aligns with the SDGs for 2030 and aims to inspire similar initiatives in the future.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, new approaches to health promotion have been developed. The target of health promotion is all ages, including children. Elementary school-age children do not yet know what is good for their physical health, including choosing healthy snacks. Consuming unsafe food can cause health problems in groups of people, leading to increasing health disparities globally. Children buy snacks based on their preferences without paying attention to the food ingredients. Children still have relatively little knowledge about healthy snacks. The aim of this activity is to provide outreach to educate elementary school-age children about healthy snacks and the importance of balanced nutrition. Community service activities were carried out on July 28 2021 from 07.30 WIB to 10.30 WIB in the classrooms of SD Negeri 03 Bukit Tambun Tulang attended by students in grades 4 and 5 and accompanied by teachers. The activity consists of 3 stages, including the preparation stage, followed by the implementation stage, and closing with the evaluation stage. The activity was carried out by the Andalas Nagari IV Koto Hilie University KKN Team which is a collaboration from various departments. Abstract

Background: School-aged children are particularly vulnerable to soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infections due to frequent exposure to contaminated soil during play and poor personal hygiene practices. Although games have been widely used as educational tools in health promotion, there is limited research on the effectiveness of board games specifically designed to prevent STH infections in children. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a board game-based educational intervention in enhancing knowledge of STH among elementary school students. Methods: Analytical experimental design using a pre-test and post-test intervention approach without a control group was employed. The subjects of this study were elementary school students in grades 3 to 6 who met specific criteria. A total of 94 students participated. Knowledge was assessed using questionnaires. The intervention involved small-group sessions (4–6 students per group) using a custom-designed educational board game about STH. The collected data were analyzed using a dependent t-test, while multivariate ordinal regression was employed for multivariate analysis. Results: The average test score improved from 0.60 (± 0.15) to 0.74 (± 0.14) post-intervention, representing a significant 14% increase in knowledge (p = 0.00). Age was not a significant predictor of post-test performance (β = 0.310; p = 0.429). Male students (β = 1.068; p = 0.013) and those in grade 4 (β = 2.031; p = 0.036; OR = 7.62, 95% CI: 1.15–50.56) were significantly more likely to achieve higher post-test scores. Conclusion: Board game-based education effectively improved knowledge about soil-transmitted helminth infection among elementary school students. This study offers novel evidence supporting the use of board games for helminthiasis prevention.

Abstract

Hypertension or elevated blood pressure is a serious medical condition that significantly increases the risks of heart, brain, kidney, and other diseases. The number of adults with hypertension increased day by day. Certain health conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, can also increase the risk of developing hypertension. The treatment of hypertension is lifestyle changes and medication. Patient with hypertension usually does not take their medication due to its side effects and expensive cost. Herbal therapy is very much developed lately, due to its low price, abundant availability in nature, and minimum side effects. The objective of this study is to find out the potential of Syzigium cumini leaves as a candidate for hypertension herbal therapy. This research is a literature review study using secondary data from related research. Syzigium cumini leaves contain flavonoids and/or triterpenes that exert antihypertensive effects through the combination of the vasodilatory and antioxidant activities of these classes of compounds. Syzygium cumini leaves reduce the blood pressure and heart rate of spontaneously hypertensive rats in some in vivo and in vitro studies. This antihypertensive effect is probably due to the inhibition of arterial tone by the blockade of extracellular Ca2+ influx. Keywords: Syzygium cumini, Hypertension, Herbal therapy.

Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent degenerative joint disease, increases with age in Indonesia, affects all ethnicities, more in women, and is a leading cause of long term disability in adults 65 years or older. Prolonged NSAID use may cause gastritis, bleeding, and renal injury. Objective: To synthesize current understanding of osteoarthritis burden, mechanisms, and patient centered management. Methods: Narrative review of recent evidence on epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, and treatment guidance. Results: Symptoms develop gradually and may accelerate after injury or overload. Drivers include joint aging, trauma or overuse, genetics, obesity, and hormonal factors. First line care comprises education, weight control, physical therapy, and structured exercise. Analgesics and NSAIDs with risk mitigation, intra articular injections, and assistive devices are added by severity and joint involvement. Early multimodal strategies reduce pain, improve function and quality of life, and may slow progression. Outcomes worsen with muscle weakness, obesity, and depression. Conclusion: Osteoarthritis is common yet manageable. Stratified individualized care started early and balanced for benefit and risk preserves mobility and independence and reduces complications.

Abstract

Background: Childhood malnutrition stems from inadequate intake and disease; synbiotics (probiotics+prebiotics) can modulate gut microbiota and immune function, aligning with SDG-3 targets through cost-effective prophylaxis and immunomodulation. Objective: To evaluate onion (Allium cepa Linn.)-derived inulin combined with probiotic-rich Sumatran dadih as supportive therapy for pediatric malnutrition. Methods: Narrative literature review of human and relevant preclinical studies on synbiotics, inulin, dadih, gut microbiota, and immune modulation, with selection based on relevance and methodological quality. Results: Evidence suggests synbiotics improve microbiota diversity, short-chain fatty acid production, nutrient absorption, and reduce inflammation and infection rates. Onion-inulin functions as a fermentable prebiotic; dadih provides robust local lactic-acid bacteria strains. Yet data are heterogeneous, sample sizes small, and dosing/formulation poorly standardized; safety reporting is variable. Conclusion: An onion-inulin + dadih synbiotic is a plausible, context-appropriate adjuvant for managing childhood malnutrition. Rigorous, controlled trials should optimize dose, strain selection, and formulation, and confirm efficacy and safety for scalable implementation.

Abstract

The use of electrical energy from year to year is increasing, but the source of electrical energy has limitations. This electrical energy crisis must be addressed immediately, one of which is using environmentally friendly and renewable fuels. One of the environmentally friendly sources of electricity is the fruit of the mahkota dewa (Phaleria macrocarpa). The purpose of writing this paper is to investigate the benefits of the crown of the gods as an alternative source of electrical energy. The subject of this research is the crown of the god fruit with the criteria that the fruit is ripe which is marked with a red color which will be used as an alternative source of electrical energy to replace batteries. In addition to its medicinal properties, the results of this study indicate that the crown of the god fruit contains alkaloid compounds (bases) that can generate electricity. The electric voltage generated from the four pieces of the crown of the god can reach a voltage of 1.8 V. Meanwhile, the current generated from one crown of the god is very small and only produces a voltage of 0.9 V. The use of the crown of the gods as a source of electrical energy has a number of advantages in addition to some of the disadvantages it has. Based on the results of research on the power source from the crown of the god, it can be concluded that the hypothesis that there are benefits of the crown of the god as an alternative source of electrical energy is acceptable.
