Abstract

This study aims to compare and contrast human language with animal communication, focusing on their construction, integration, and design features based on language theories. While human language is complex, flexible, and capable of abstract thought, animal communication systems are often considered more limited, relying on instinctual signals. By examining key theoretical frameworks, including Charles Hockett's "Design Features of Language." this research analyzes both human and animal communication systems to explore their similarities and differences. A qualitative research method was used, involving a comprehensive literature review and comparative analysis of human language and animal communication examples. The findings reveal that human language has distinct features such as productivity, displacement, and recursion, which are absent in most animal communication systems. However, some animal species demonstrate rudimentary forms of syntax and symbolism. The study concludes by emphasizing the unique qualities of human language and suggesting areas for further research on the cognitive abilities of animals.

Abstract

This study focuses on the phenomenon of code switching that appears in one of Maudy Ayunda's YouTube videos entitled "Study Hacks Ala Maudy Ayunda", with the aim of describing the types and the functions of code switching used by Maudy Ayunda on her YouTube channel, both of which are analyzed using Hoffman's theory. This study uses a qualitative method with content analysis based on Hoffmann's theory. Data is taken from the video script itself, and the results are calculated using the Sudijono formula. The results of the study after analyzing the video, the author found that there were sixty-five data in the types and functions of code switching. In the types of code switching, intra sentential and intra sentential code switching are the highest types, namely 31 data (47.6%) and tag sentential code switching is the lowest type, namely 3 data (4.6%). Meanwhile, in the code switching function, talking about particular topic is a function of code switching that has the highest data, which is 23 data (35.3%), then followed by intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, which consists of 13 data (20%), then followed by being emphatic about something (express solidarity) and repetition, which is 10 data (15.38%), then followed by interjection and expressing group identity, which each have 4 data (6.15%) and the lowest is quoting somebody else, which is only 1 data (1.53%).

Abstract

Previous research on Teams Games Tournament (TGT) has been dominated by a quantitative focus on learning outcomes, creating a gap in understanding the affective and psychosocial aspects of learning. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to describe the lived experiences of tenth-grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Siantar in learning English through the TGT model. Through phenomenological interviews with 35 students, this study identified five essential themes: (1) Motivation and Learning Enjoyment, (2) Teamwork and Sense of Connectedness, (3) Competition and Emotional Pressure, (4) Independence and Self-Reflection, and (5) Meaningful Learning. The findings reveal that the dynamics of TGT effectively fulfill the Three Basic Psychological Needs in Self-Determination Theory (SDT): Relatedness, Competence, and Autonomy. Overall, students perceive TGT as a “living” and meaningful learning experience, as it integrates academic aspects with the development of soft skills such as collaboration and confidence.
