Abstract

Sosialisasi dan pelatihan pembuatan preparat dengan teknik stomata printing bagi guru dan siswa SMA IT Darul Marhamah ABS bertujuan melatih guru dan siswa membuat preparat pada pelaksaaan praktikum biologi di sekolah. Peserta sasaran dari pengabdian ini adalah guru dan siswa SMA IT Darul Marhamah ABS Kota Makassar. Metode yang dilakukan adalah observasi, sosialisasi dan pelatihan. Kegiatan pengabdian telah dilaksanakan pada tanggal 18 November 2024 yang bertempat di ruang kelas SMA IT Darul Marhamah ABS dengan diikuti oleh 47 orang peserta yang terdiri dari guru biologi dan siswa SMA IT Darul Marhamah ABS. Hasil dari kegitana ini antara lain meningkatkan keterampilan guru-guru SMA dalam pembuatan preparat dengan teknik stomata printing sebagai media pembelajaran biologi. Kegiatan ini diharapkan kelak dapat membantu guru biologi dalam mengembangkan media pembelajaran biologi sehingga mutu pembelajaran biologi dapat lebih meningkat. Kegiatan ini berfokus pada pembuatan preparat dengan teknik stomata printing yang hingga saat ini dianggap menjadi salah satu teknik pembuatan preparat yang efisien dan sederhana. Lebih lanjut masih perlu dilakukan pelatihan dan pendampingan dalam pembuatan preparat dengan teknik lainnya.

Abstract

Kefir is a dairy product derived from the fermentation of milk by kefir grains. Kefir grains are natural starter cultures in the form of small spheres containing various microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. This study aims to evaluate the effect of milk medium type and initial weight of kefir grains on four fermentation parameters: curd, whey, pH, and kefir grain weight gain. The materials used in this study were natural starter cultures in the form of kefir grains and packaged cow's milk from various brands (A, B, D, F, and G) with differing nutritional compositions, as well as bulk cow's milk (C and E). The kefir production process began by mixing 250 ml of commercial cow's milk from various brands with kefir grains. The mass of kefir grains used was varied at 10 grams and 12 grams. Data analysis was performed using the Two-Way ANOVA method and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Based on the results of the Two-Way ANOVA test, it was found that the type of milk medium had a significant effect on three main parameters, namely curd (p-value = 0.000), whey (p-value = 0.000), and pH (p-value = 0.021), but did not have a significant effect on the increase in kefir grains (p-value = 0.676). Conversely, the initial weight of kefir grains only significantly affected kefir seed growth (p = 0.003) but not the other parameters. Packaged milk with higher nutritional content produces higher curds and lower whey, thereby potentially producing higher quality kefir. These results indicate that the type and nutritional content of milk affect the quality of kefir fermentation.

Abstract

Abstract Socialization and training activities on liquid organic fertilizer (POC) production for high school students in urban areas were carried out with the aim of increasing the knowledge and skills of urban students in managing organic waste into products that are economically valuable and environmentally friendly. Household waste, especially food scraps and other organic waste, has great potential to be processed into POC that can be used as an alternative fertilizer for plants. This activity involved the active participation of students, focusing on providing information about the benefits of POC, simple and easy-to-apply production techniques, and hands-on practice in making POC using readily available materials. The results of this activity showed an increase in participants' understanding of the importance of organic waste management and the potential of POC as a sustainable fertilizer solution. In addition, participants were able to practice making POC independently, which is expected to reduce the volume of waste disposed of in landfills and increase soil fertility and crop productivity in the surrounding environment. Thus, this outreach and training activity made a positive contribution to creating a clean, healthy, and productive environment through the optimal utilization of household waste in urban areas.

Abstract

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) is a significant tropical bioresource known for its essential oil, which possesses high ethnobiological and economic value but cannot yet be synthetically produced. This study aims to establish an in vitro conservation framework and evaluate the preservation of secondary metabolites (volatile oil) within callus cultures. Leaf explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with various combinations of 2,4-D and BAP: 1 ppm BAP (W1), 1 ppm BAP + 1 ppm 2,4-D (W2), 1 ppm BAP + 2 ppm 2,4-D (W3), 2 ppm BAP + 1 ppm 2,4-D (W4), and 2 ppm BAP + 2 ppm 2,4-D (W5). The results indicated that W1 (1 ppm BAP without 2,4-D) was the most effective treatment for sustainable biomass production, achieving a 75% growth rate, the fastest induction time (6 days), and the highest fresh weight (0.1364 g). Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) profiling confirmed that the in vitro callus successfully preserved volatile oil components identical to the mother plant, as evidenced by purple spots at Rf values of 0.75 and 0.95. Although alkaloids and flavonoids were not detected due to the cellular dedifferentiation phase, the consistent presence of volatile oils demonstrates the potential of in vitro systems for the conservation and sustainable management of tropical aromatic plant metabolites.

Abstract

Sulawesi Island is a key area of the Wallacea region, known for its high level of plant endemism, including the genus Pogostemon. A comprehensive taxonomic study is essential to document the biodiversity and provide accurate identification for tropical resource management. This study aims to examine the taxonomic characters of Pogostemon spp. collected from Sulawesi and deposited at Herbarium Bogoriense (BO). Using a descriptive method based on morphological characteristics of 13 collection numbers, the study analyzed vegetative and reproductive structures. The results identified two distinct species: Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. and Pogostemon auricularius Hassk. These species are clearly distinguished by the shape of the leaf blade, calyx structure, and the type of indumentum present on the stem, leaf, and flower surfaces. This taxonomic study contributes to the baseline data of Lamiaceae in Sulawesi, supporting further research in plant ecology and conservation of tropical flora
